“The Bear” cooked up a storm for its freshman season at the Emmy Awards, gaining a total of 13 nominations across the board with bids in acting, writing, directing, editing, casting, sound and of course Best Comedy Series. Having debuted way early in the Emmy eligibility period, it has sustained its buzz throughout the year with various award wins at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild of America and Producers Guild of America. Included as part of their showcase is Oliver Platt for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his performance as Jimmy “Cicero” Kalinowski, his fifth nomination overall. Can he finally win an Emmy?
This is Platt’s first Emmy bid in a comedy category, having previously been mentioned for three dramas: “The West Wing” in 2001 and “Nip/Tuck” in 2008 for Best Drama Guest Actor, and “Huff” from 2005-2006 for Best Drama Supporting Actor. Other credits he has had in...

Within the past four years alone, the success rate for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress Emmy nominees who have entered their ceremonies with same-year SAG Award wins under their belts has dropped from 100% to 60%. After being followed by Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) in 2021, win-lose trendsetter Patricia Arquette might soon be joined by 2023 SAG Award recipient Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”), whose Gold Derby Emmy odds are significantly lower than those of her strongest challenger, Ali Wong (“Beef”).
Chastain and Wong represent half of their Emmy lineup’s first-time acting nominee majority, which also includes Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”) and Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”). Rounding out the group, which features no former Emmy champions, are category newcomers Lizzy Caplan (“Fleishman is in Trouble”) and Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”).
In order to determine the likelihood of Chastain perpetuating said unfortunate trend, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

History was made 10 years ago at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards held Sept. 22, 2013. It was the first time in history that a streaming service took home a trophy. Three Netflix series — the “Arrested Development” reboot, “Hemlock Grove” and the lauded “House of Cards” — earned a total of 14 nominations. “House of Cards” helmer David Fincher won an Emmy for the pilot episode. Netflix had earlier received two Creative Arts Emmys,

When the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Rhea Seehorn and Sydney Sweeney both had the honor of seeing their names come up twice. In addition to landing slots in the Best Drama Supporting Actress lineup for “Better Call Saul” and “Euphoria,” respectively, Seehorn (“Cooper’s Bar”) also competed for Best Short Form Actress while Sweeney (“The White Lotus”) was included among the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress contenders. Since neither of them had been recognized by the TV academy before, they became part of a group of 24 doubly-nominated Emmy first-timers.
Neither Seehorn nor Sweeney succeeded on either of her bids, but that isn’t surprising given the fact that only six of this group’s two dozen members have actually pulled off wins. The first such victor was Robert Cummings, who also originally established the club back in 1955. He received what would now be considered the Best Limited/Movie...

The outlet that unexpectedly crashed the top Emmy race; the home to complicated LGBTQ and female storytelling for an intriguing, glimmering moment; the place that today, even in its attenuated state, airs “Yellowjackets” and “Ziwe.”
For a long moment leading up until very recently, Showtime has felt like something less than what it once was — perhaps inevitable, given that “what it once was” was a channel that punched so far above weight that it seemed at times close to an equal of HBO. And the news that it is in some way changing form, taking on the cumbersome name “Paramount+ With Showtime” and seeing its highest-profile forthcoming series, “Three Women,” get offloaded before airing, suggests that even its more mediocre days as a stand-alone television network will soon be in the rear-view mirror.

A dozen years ago, Laura Linney became the fifth of seven actresses to conquer two lead TV Golden Globe categories by winning Best Comedy Actress for “The Big C” two years after being honored for her work on the limited series “John Adams.” Following her unsuccessful Best Drama Actress bid for Netflix’s “Ozark” in 2021, she now has a second chance to blaze a trail as the first winner of all three Golden Globe awards available to lead TV actresses. Since her show has come to an end and she is up against a slate of category newcomers, she should now stand a better chance of standing out to voters and achieving this impressive feat.

No one reigns over the Emmys quite like Laura Linney does. A four-time champ, she has famously scored a victory for each of her nominated roles so far, having won for “Wild Iris” (2002), “John Adams” (2008) and “The Big C: Hereafter” (2013) for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress, and for “Frasier” (2004) for Best Comedy Guest Actress. Now the actor has one last chance to maintain this sterling record as she, shortlisted for Best Drama Actress for “Ozark” for the third time in a row, has never triumphed for playing Wendy Byrde on the Netflix series and contends for its fourth and final season this year.
This is the first year in which Linney, who was recognized solely for acting for the second and third seasons of “Ozark” in 2019 and 2020, snagged an additional nomination for the gritty crime series: Best Drama Series as a co-executive producer. These dual bids bring her grand total to nine,...

When Laura Linney accepted the 2013 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress Emmy for portraying Cathy Jamison on “The Big C: Hereafter,” she joined an elite group of women who have amassed four victories for as many different primetime programs. Cloris Leachman became the first to achieve the feat in 1984, followed by Alfre Woodard in 2003 and Betty White in 2010. Four years after concluding her run as Jamison, which she began when “The Big C” was classified as a comedy series, Linney took on her second regular role as Wendy Byrde on Netflix’s “Ozark.”
Linney’s performance as Byrde brought her three bids for the Best Drama Actress award between 2019 and 2022. During the show’s two-part fourth and final season, her money-laundering character develops into an even more ruthless and calculating high-end criminal whose mental state sometimes wavers when she is reminded of her brother’s murder or her father’s abusive nature.

Anne Heche was a showrunner’s dream. She was a strong and empathetic leader who always showed up ready to do the work. She knew what her job was as No. 1 on the call sheet. She knew how important it was to set the right tone of inclusion and happiness on the set. She was able to give generously and voluminously to her fellow actors.
This is the Anne Heche that I will remember when I think of my friend and collaborator on the dramedy series “Men in Trees,” which ran on ABC from 2006-08. It is hard for me to reconcile the Anne that I knew with the circumstances of her death, which came Aug. 14, nine days after a fiery car crash in West Los Angeles that made headlines around the world.
She was used to headlines. “Men in Trees” came together at a pivotal point in Anne’s life.

On July 25, Laura Linney is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It’s exactly the kind of high-profile status symbol Wendy Byrde might finagle to burnish her place among Tinseltown’s most successful and respected, except that the actor earned the honor precisely for playing the master manipulator on “Ozark” (and dozens of other unforgettable roles) so convincingly. Recognition coincides with the end of the acclaimed Netflix series, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe and three Emmys for the final season. After decades of showing the strength of tender characters and the tenderness of strong ones, earning a star immortalizes Linney’s complexity, versatility and febrile intelligence.

Included among the 2022 Primetime Emmy contenders are five actors nominated for multiple performances. Julia Garner (“Inventing Anna” and “Ozark”), Bill Hader (“Barry” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), and Harriet Walter (“Succession” and “Ted Lasso”) have been recognized by the TV academy before, while the remaining two – Rhea Seehorn and Sydney Sweeney – are now part of a group of 24 doubly-nominated first-timers. The respective “Better Call Saul” and “Euphoria” cast members are both up for the Best Drama Supporting Actress award, while Seehorn is also competing for Best Short Form Actress (“Cooper’s Bar”) and Sweeney for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress (“The White Lotus”).

Tomorrow Studios is adapting Jonathan Franzen’s New York Times bestselling “Freedom: A Novel” into a television series with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions (“The Good Fight”). Golden Globe-winning “The Affair” producer Melanie Marnich is set to write.
“Jonathan Franzen’s ‘Freedom’ is a laugh-out-loud, emotional knock-out of a novel and we couldn’t have conjured a better writer to adapt this material than the brilliant Melanie Marnich,” Scott said in a statement. “We are very excited to bring this project to market with our partners at Tomorrow Studios.”
Released in 2010, “Freedom” was named by the Times as one of the 10 best books of the year; upon its release, it also won the John Gardner Fiction Award and became a National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist and a Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist.

Mark my words. At this year’s Emmys, there’s already one category where we might as well call it a day. Best Drama Actress is sewn up. It’s done. It’s not even a race. Zendaya will win a bookend Emmy for her ferocious and heartbreaking performance in the provocative sophomore season of HBO’s pop culture phenomenon “Euphoria.”
Yeah, I know the Emmy nominations aren’t even out yet. They’re being announced this Tuesday (July 12) during the annual nail-biter press conference when all of Hollywood braces itself to find out who and what will make the cut among the very best of TV. And the actress is way out in front according to our combined odds, which puts her in pole position to win again.

The Emmy best actress races are becoming increasingly competitive as big-name stars participate in creating shows, reclaiming the power to be leading ladies carrying an increasingly complex narrative. Take Julia Roberts and her role as the Washington socialite turned whistleblower Martha Mitchell in Starz’ limited-series Emmy contender “Gaslit.”
With Mitchell, the actress-producer explores a woman of contradictions: a stylish hostess who tipsily goes over the edge into drug and alcohol abuse; a political player on the arm of Richard Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell (Sean Penn), whose marriage crumbles under the weight of an administration in crisis; and a traumatized wife and mother experiencing Ptsd after repeatedly being roughly thrown under the bus by the powerful white men in the room.

A version of this story about Laura Linney and “Ozark” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Looking back, it’s hard to believe there was ever a time in “Ozark” when Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) wasn’t in the driver’s seat. The Netflix drama kicks off when Wendy’s husband Marty (Jason Bateman) relocates his family to Missouri to launder money for a Mexican drug cartel. By the series finale, which aired this April, it was clear who the real kingpin was: Marty may have dragged them into this mess, but only Wendy was willing to do whatever it took to survive.
Throughout four seasons of violence, betrayal and near-death experiences, that quality made Wendy one of Ozark’s most ruthless, unpredictable characters — and Linney one of its most compelling performers.

Believe it or not, Laura Linney (“Ozark”) has yet to win an Emmy for playing Wendy Byrde. A two-time Best Drama Actress nominee for the Netflix series (2019-20), she was the odds-on favorite to win for her banner third season in 2020, but was bested by “Euphoria” star Zendaya that year. Now, after a year delay due to Covid, she is eligible for the show’s fourth and final season, and ready to take out her competition (just like Wendy would).
As of this writing, Linney is in second place in our Drama Actress odds, trailing only Zendaya. Rounding out the Top 6 are “Yellowjackets'” Melanie Lynskey in third place, “The Morning Show’s” Jennifer Aniston in fourth and “Killing Eve’s” Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh in fifth and sixth, respectively. Should this be the ultimate lineup, Linney would ironically battle four of her five rivals from 2020, with Lynskey replacing a...

In Monster Scripted’s seven-episode series “Afterglow,” hailing from Norway, Ester – mother, wife and a friend – finds out she has cancer. But instead of giving in to pain, she “demands joy,” actress Nina Ellen Ødegård told Variety at Canneseries after its premiere in main competition. REinvent handles sales.
“She gets desperate, in a way, and I find it so true,” she says about her spirited character who refuses to be victimized. Ødegård, also a regular in supernatural Nordic noir “Seizure,” embraced – and loved – Ester’s failings.
“After seeing the first episodes again, I thought: ‘I am so rude!’ But we wanted to show her being as human as possible, so that others can hopefully recognize themselves in her struggle. I haven’t experienced illness [knocks on wood], but when I became a mother, I was also obnoxious to my friends. I always felt like I didn’t have enough time. The CW is recruiting one of the original 4400 for its reboot: Patrick John Flueger, who played returnee Shawn Farrell on the USA Network drama, will guest-star as Caleb, a charismatic figure from one of the 4400’s past, our sister site Deadline reports. Additionally, original series co-creator Scott Peters will direct an upcoming episode of the update.
Airing Mondays at 9/8c, the CW drama follows 4,400 overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized people who vanished without a trace over the last hundred years and are all returned in an instant, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them.

When Alena Smith sat down to tell the untold tale of famed poet Emily Dickinson, she imagined a three-year television series. She sold the show straight to series to Apple TV Plus in May 2018, more than a year before that streamer would even launch. To say that Smith’s goal of three seasons at an unproven entity had to come with risk and hope may be an understatement. But she was able to carry her original plan to fruition, and now “Dickinson” is the first Apple TV Plus series to conclude its run having carried out its creator’s vision.
“In Season 3 we’ve lived through a lot with these characters, we’ve all grown and changed and their relationships have certainly deepened over time, and to just honor all of that history was really rewarding,” Smith tells Variety.
“To me, this whole series is really one work of art.

When HBO announced a fourth season of its Emmy-winning series “In Treatment” more than 10 years after the third season wrapped, star Uzo Aduba had Gabriel Byrne’s Emmy-nominated shoes to fill. It came as no surprise that Aduba dazzled as the show’s new lead, as her therapist character Brooke aided and occasionally sparred with patients played by Emmy nominee Anthony Ramos (“Hamilton”), former nominee John Benjamin Hickey (“The Big C”) and standout Quintessa Swindell. The best moments of the entire season, though, feature Brooke grappling with her own challenges, including the death of her father, her alcoholism, and her long-festering regrets about her son, who she was forced to give up for adoption.
All of these issues take center stage in Aduba’s tour-de-force Emmy episode submission, “Brooke – Week 5.” Waiting on a last-minute visit from Byrne’s Paul – though unseen, this new season repeatedly references Paul as Brooke’s...
