Frank's bullying aunt, who has always been his patron rather than Mr. Weston, dies and Frank reveals that he and Jane have been engaged for several months but kept it secret for fear of the aunt's disapproval. Emma is shocked at Frank's deceit.She also sees the error of her ways in organizing others' lives and encourages Harriet to go after her first love, Robert Martin, preparing herself for a life as a singleton and feeling alone when George goes to London "to learn to be indifferent." - Emma's long hoped-for picnic at Box Hill finally takes place and Frank Churchill is most attentive. Mrs. Elton is the only real problem until Emma directs some harsh and unnecessarily hurtful comments towards Miss Bates. George Knightley takes her aside and tells how cruel she has been and yet again, another chill descends upon them. Frank is released from his obligation to his aunt when she dies and has an announcement: he and Jane Fairfax have been secretly engaged for some months. Emma is devastated, having convinced herself that he was set on her; she also realizes that she got it wrong and that it's Mr. Knightley that Harriet is interested in. With Mr. Knightley deciding to leave for London, Emma now realizes just how wrong she has been about everyone, including her own emotions.—garykmcd
