A set of lawn darts are visible in Bruiser's Pawnshop. Lawn darts were banned from sale and second hand resale in Canada in 1989 indicating that Bruiser is, in fact, an outlaw.
Bruiser's Pawnshop, and the stage where the kids are dancing are both located at Lee Farms which is 15 minutes East of High Level. A 'Wild West' Main Street is on the property with several buildings lined up to recreate a thoroughfare from an old mining camp however only the stage and General Store were used in filming Guitar Lessons
All the scenes inside the hospital were actually shot at the Town Hall in High Level, AB. Props, wardrobe and set decorations were borrowed from the actual hospital in High Level, a pharmacy, medical clinic, Northern Lakes College, and an ambulance service.
Anika Gramson, who plays Nurse Gayle in the film, is a nurse in real life.
Director of Photography Justin Godlien makes a cameo on a poster for medication in the waiting room and in Leland's room in the hospital.
