It's last call for several horror films, including "The Silence of the Lambs" and the "The Omen" trilogy, which are leaving Netflix in December.
Also going bye-bye: Both versions of manly tearjerker "Brian's Song" and classics including "All About Eve" (1950), "The Great Escape" (1963) and "The Hustler" (1961). And if you want to stream '80s favorites "The Dark Crystal" (1982) or "Labyrinth" (1986), better get on that before December 1.

George Lucas admits in a recent interview for the upcoming documentary Trek Nation that Star Wars stood on the shoulders of Star Trek. He basically says Star Wars wouldn't have been as successful had Star Trek not help pave the way for it by building a sic-fi fantasy fan base. Here's the exact quote from Lucas thanks to Hero Complex,
“Star Trek softened up the entertainment arena so that Star Wars could come along and stand on its shoulders. There was an effective group of people in the beginning who accepted it..that it wasn't that far out. For the studios it was way far out, [they said] 'what is this?', but there was a fanbase out there -- primarily the Star Trek fanbase -- who understood sci-fi, understood visual sci-fi, and was ready for something like this (Star Wars) to be in the feature arena."

There's an interesting sounding new documentary coming, by the name of Trek Nation. In the documentary, Rod Roddenberry embarks on a personal journey to uncover the impact and importance of his father's work. His father, you might have guessed, just happened to be Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek.
One of the interviewees in the documentary is George Lucas, and some of what he has to say in the movie has popped up in a clip over at Hero Complex. Given that there was a period where it felt like Star Wars and Star Trek fans were at some kind of loggerheads, Lucas nonetheless argues that Star Trek proved vitally important to Star Wars.

These days the big fanboy debates (or wars in some cases) tend to stem from Marvel vs DC, but not so long ago it was all about the Stars..Wars Vs Trek. Of course there are still those that champion their chosen franchise over the other, but since J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot many fans seem to have put aside the age old battle and admitted that there are merits to both. The upcoming documentary Trek Nation will delve into Rod Roddenberry’s journey to explore the importance of the legendary sci-fi franchise created by his father Gene, and Hero Complex have a brief interview with George Lucas, in which he talks about the influence those boldly going where no man has gone before had on his galaxy far far away. “Star Trek softened up the entertainment arena so that Star Wars could come along and stand on its shoulders.

Stan Lee's known as many things: writer, creator, showman, promoter, spokesman, and cameo actor extraordinaire. But can we add Trekkie to that list? An interview conducted by Rod Roddenberry for "Trek Nation," the documentary about his late father Gene Roddenberry, reveals that Stan Lee considered the "Star Trek" creator to be something of a kindred spirit.
"I tried to, given the fact that there was a fantasy angle [to the Marvel Comics superheroes] somewhere, I tried to make everything else as realistic as possible," Lee says to Roddenberry. "It's sort of a case of realistic fantasy, and I would say your father [Gene] was a master of that."

With Cannes now in full swing, the latest edition of Indiewire's curation of Hulu's Documentaries page indulges in some long-distance cinephilia. If you didn't make it out on the Croisette this year, let these selections - about film and filmmaking - remind you of your love for the cinema. Watch them now for free! A good place to start is by exploring the devotion certain films engender. Tariq Jalil's "A Galaxy Far Far Away" focuses on the anticipation for "The Phantom Menace" among hardcore "Star Wars" fans, while Scott Colthorp's "Trek Nation" shows the "Star Trek" franchise's lasting impact. The love of film crosses all genres and tastes - and even for a film deemed the best of the worst, as shown in Michael Stephenson's enjoyable "Best Worst Movie," detailing the making of the much-maligned "Troll 2" and its later success as a cult film. The 2012 San Diego Film Festival begins this Wednesday, September 26th, and runs through Sunday, September 30th. The highlight of The Horror Fest at Gaslamp is Martin McDonagh’s highly anticipated Seven Psychopaths (review here), starring Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell: A struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu.
Jonah D. Ansell's Cadaver animated short film looks to be another one not to miss: A macabre nursery rhyme (most definitely not for kids!) starring Back to the Future's Christopher Lloyd, sixteen-year-old fashion icon Tavi Gevinson,...

More than eight months after it made its debut on the Science cable channel, "Trek Nation" is once again available -- and you don't have to be at San Diego Comic-Con to get it. The documentary, hosted by Eugene W. Roddenberry Jr. as part of his exploration into Trek fandom as well as the work of his father, the late "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, is now available on a number of platforms. They include Apple iTunes, Xbox Live, Vudu and YouTube. First started in 2003, Roddenberry traveled the world to talk to various Star Trek fans, trying to find out the heart of what makes this franchise tick. He not only talked to the biggest Trekkies, but hit celebrities as well, including George Lucas, Stan Lee, Seth MacFarlane and others. If that weren't enough, "Trek Nation" will be part ...

With Comic-Con just two days away, the imminent pandering to fans has already begun. Morgan Spurlock's documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope just hit DVD and Blu-ray this week, and now it appears that we have yet another fan-oriented documentary that will be premiering at the Con: William Shatner's Get a Life. The movie finds Shatner trying to get to the bottom of what makes Trekkers tick. But wait a minute, hasn't this subject already been explored like a billion times before? Why yes... yes it has. Watching the teaser trailer for Get a Life, it's hard to see anything new that Shatner might be able to add to the conversation. In addition to Trekkies and Trekkies 2, there is Rod Roddenbery's Trek Nation, which is also holding a special screening at Comic-Con this week. If Shatner's last documentary The Captains is any indication of what to expect,...

Whenever I’ve urged anyone who’d listen that Fringe is the great science-fiction series that networks have been trying to make (and stick), one of the most common excuses is that they are too far behind to just jump into the middle. But who could blame anyone wanting to start from the beginning? Fringe‘s universe switching, multiple versions of several characters, and shape-shifters could confuse even the most attentive fans. Outside of sitting down with the DVDs or blu-rays, getting new viewers to catch onto the story, as the series begins production on its fifth and final, 13-episode season, will be even more difficult. For those who own Discovery Communication’s Science Channel it just got a little easier.
THR reported today that the niche cable channel will get non-exclusive syndication rights to air the re-runs on cable but the agreement leaves streaming flexibility in the future. Fringe...

Awards season may have come and gone, but sci-fi fans still have something to look forward to with today's announcement of the Saturn Award nominees.
The awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, recognize excellence in these genres, which are often underrepresented at other awards shows.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this year's big movie contenders are "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," "Hugo," tied with 10 nominations each.
A number of the movies scoring big have been commercial successes but have not received awards show love, including J.J. Abrams' $260-million grossing monster hit "Super 8," which nabbed eight nominations, and "Captain America: The First Avenger," which earned nearly $400 million worldwide, coming in with six.

In a twist that would have significantly changed the "Star Trek" universe, Spock was originally to be played by a woman - according to Lieutenant Uhura actress Nichelle Nichols.
In an interview from 2002 for "Trek Nation Director's Log," which recently aired on the Science Channel special "Trek Nation," the actress claimed that creator Gene Roddenberry wanted the famous Vulcan to be played by a woman.
"They gave me a three-page script to read from that had three characters named," she said in the interview. "There was Bones, Kirk and someone called Spock and they asked me to ...

Though the "Star Trek" has been rebooted with a new sheen, make no mistake: Leonard Nimoy is Mr. Spock. But here's a twist: had things turned out the way series creator Gene Roddenberry intended them, the role would have been perhaps been cast as Ms. Spock.
In an interview filmed in 2002 for "Trek Nation Director's Log" and aired recently on the Science Channel special "Trek Nation," Nichelle Nicols revealed that she was the original Vulcan of Roddenberry's eye.
"They gave me a three-page script to read from that had three characters named," she said. "There was Bones, Kirk and someone called Spock and they asked me to read for the role of Spock. When I looked at this great text, I said to myself, 'I'll take any one of these roles,' but I found the Spock character to be very interesting, and I asked them to tell me what she [Spock] was like.

Director Scott Colthorp and narrator Eugene W. Roddenberry Jr. are set to finally debut their documentary "Trek Nation" on the Science cable channel Nov. 30. But getting from there to here was a path that took years -- and more than once almost seemed dead in its tracks. "Trek Nation" is a celebration of the Gene Roddenberry philosophy, his life, fandom and the journey of Gene's son to discover it. The two-hour documentary will feature many big names in Star Trek including J.J. Abrams, Nichelle Nichols, Ronald D. Moore and even Rick Berman. It will also include Stan Lee, George Lucas, Seth MacFarlane and more. Airlock Alpha has covered the project from its very beginning, a beginning that occurred in April 2003 when Roddenberry declared it was time to create an answer to the not-so-popular ...

Scott's talked with dozens of people from every series, got inside access with Rod Roddenberry (Gene's son), and even interviewed scientists, writers, and rock stars all influenced by the...

It was 45 years ago today that TV audiences were first taken where no man had gone before with the debut of Star Trek. The original series had relatively low Nielsen ratings and was canceled after three seasons, but the franchise still managed to become an overwhelming success. Since then, the original series has spawned four more live-action series, an animated series, eleven movies (with one more on the way), hundreds of novels, short stories and comic books, board, video and role-playing games, and tons of merchandise (including a marshmallow dispenser and a talking lunchbox). In addition, a 184 acre, billion dollar plus Star Trek resort is currently underway in Jordan and set to open in 2014. But why is it so big? Wouldn't they just need a handful of holodecks?

It took Gene Roddenberry years to get "Star Trek" on the screen. It was his first major project he took from beginning to end, and he wasn't going to stop until some network found it a home. That became a similar journey for his only son nearly a half-century later, but not to create a franchise that would entertain and enlighten generations -- but to present a documentary that would show one son's exploration of what Star Trek really meant for his father. "Trek Nation" is set to premiere in November on Discovery's Science Channel, and both Roddenberry Productions chief operating officer Trevor Roth and Rod Roddenberry himself sat down with Airlock Alpha to talk about the eight-year mission that got "Trek Nation" to the finish line. "If it wasn't such a personal story to us, and ...

"It's fun to play with the what-could-have-been part of my father's life," said Eugene W. Roddenberry Jr., son of the late "Star Trek" creator. "'Gene's Journal' is a concept full of imagination and possibility. I've always thought about what the idea could become when it's able to really spread its wings in a new medium. I couldn't be more thrilled than to see it making that evolutionary step." The online comic was created by Trevor Roth and illustrated by cartoonist David Reddick. It's supposed to chronicle ...

Nearly a decade in the making, and now all it needs is some old convention film. Eugene W. Roddenberry's long-awaited "Trek Nation" documentary is ever-so-close to a release. And now the Star Trek advocate (and protector of his father's vision for the franchise) is turning to fans to help him put the final touches on the production. Trevor Roth, a co-producer for the movie, told TrekMovie that they are trying to fill a "few final holes" with the intent of "bringing a more vivid picture to Star Trek's history." Roddenberry is looking for footage specifically from 1970s conventions, including guest speakers and the convention floor. He's also looking for behind-the-scenes footage from both the original "Star Trek" series and one of its spinoffs, "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Roddenberry ...

I am not a Trekkie. I've seen some of the original series, a little more of The Next Generation, most of the films with the original cast, and the most recent one. I get why it has such a following, but it's just not my thing.
It wasn't Rod Roddenberry's thing, either, before his father passed away. Rod is the son of Gene Roddenberry, who created the Starship Enterprise and its inhabitants, but Rod, who was born some time after the first series was canceled, didn't really grow up influenced by Star Trek. I’m nowhere as big a Star Trek geek as the dude in the Borg costume at about the 44 second mark in the below trailer, but I’ve been and still am a fan of the franchise, and I’d see this if it comes my way. Like Trek? Then you’ve probably been liking it more than Eugene Roddenberry, only son of the late, great Gene Roddenberry, and who apparently didn’t have any idea that his daddy’s creation is beloved by a whole lotta people until Gene passed away. Dude must have been living in a cave all this time. Hey, that’s not me talking, that’s what Eugene (aka Rod) says in this trailer for Scott Colthorp’s Trek documentary “Trek Nation”. I’ve always been a fan of Trek, though I’ve never worn a Star Fleet Uniform to a Trek convention. Heck, I’ve never come even 100 miles of a Trek convention, but I find it amusing that Rod claims to never have enjoyed any of the Trek stuff until his dad passed away. I am a "Star Trek" fan in as much as I love the original series and particularly enjoy The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home as well as the latest Star Trek feature. I enjoyed "Enterprise," but never found any enjoyment "The Next Generation" cast other than finding First Contact a solid film and I haven't been inclined to see any of the other "Star Trek" spin-offs including "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager". And as much as I enjoy certain elements of the "Star Trek" universe I can't say I wholly understand the Trekkie nation, but the upcoming documentary Trek Nation, directed by Scott Colthorp and led by "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's son, Rod Roddenberry, looks quite fascinating as the first trailer for the film has arrived.

One of the things that Eugene W. Roddenberry had vowed to finish no matter how long it takes was his answer to the popular, yet controversial, "Trekkies" documentary with his own take called "Trek Nation."Production of the documentary started several years ago with visits to Star Trek conventions and other events around the country and world. It included interviews with some of the most famous names, not only in Trekdom, but in science-fiction in general. And was meant to be an intimate look at who fans really were, and what Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek philosophy was. That documentary is finally almost ready to go, and Roddenberry Productions -- led by Roddenberry and Trevor Roth -- is giving fans a new first look at "Trek Nation."This clip really shows the new direction the documentary took, ...
