The film had no script, and dialogue was largely improvised on set by actors Molly Shayna Cohen and Susan Louise O'Connor. Director Tyler C. Peterson wanted to lean into the collaborative nature of the mumblecore film movement, and let the actors create their own characters that fit a story concept he created with cinematographer Amanda Ferrarese.
"Copper & Wool" marks the fourth film in a row that director Tyler C. Peterson cast Molly Shayna Cohen in. He allowed her to name and create her own character to fit the rough concept he had in mind.
"Copper & Wool" was shot on 16mm with a hand-cranked Bolex camera. This demanded each take to cut after thirty seconds so cinematographer Amanda Ferrarese could wind the camera back up, contributing to the films overall short scene length. Director Tyler C. Peterson didn't want any scenes to run longer than "two cranks of the camera."
The only scene in the film where the dialogue was fully scripted is the excerpt from Mere's manuscript that is heard.
