The Getback is the latest “Tubi Original”, but I’m not sure that’s really accurate as there’s almost nothing original about this film.
Mal Cooper was a rising star in the police department. Until someone he brought in was found not guilty and Mal took matters into his own hands. Turns out the guy was someone even a cop can’t get away with beating, the son of a senator. The ensuing scandal cost him his job and his wife.
Now he works as a bounty hunter, tracking down bail jumpers for Alexander Rogan. Right now he wants him to bring in Jake Gordon. There’s just one problem, Jake’s testimony could make sure Alonzo Beaumont never leaves prison, so...

The biggest deal that occurred during the Sundance Film Festival wasn’t one that went down at the event itself. New Line Cinema emerged triumphant amid an intense bidding war to grab “Weapons” which will be the next film from “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger. Days later, New Line signed a first-look deal with the whole BoulderLight studio itself.
It was a strong statement, following some high-profile departures, that Warner Bros. Discovery is still in the scary movie business and that New Line remains “the house that Freddy built.”
Whether or not BoulderLight Pictures, run by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, becomes the next Blumhouse or Atomic Monster, two entities that may just merge into a single 1600-lb gorilla of horror movie might, the deal is a sign that losing Walter Hamada – who, to be fair, had been running DC Films since 2018 – to Paramount and watching James Wan potentially make his...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And with its list of new releases for December 2022, Hulu is planning accordingly.
Compared to its rival streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max, Hulu is a bit more holiday forward in the final month of 2022. Sure, all the streaming services are bringing some Christmas content to the table, but Hulu is the only one to plant its flag in a special called It’s a Wonderful Binge. This comedic take on a psychedelic Purge-like Christmas is set to premiere on Dec. 8.
Elsewhere on Hulu this month, subscribers can look forward to the release of FX’s Kindred (Dec. 13). Based on a thrilling novel of the same name, this series follows a woman being violently yanked back and forth in time. In what’s increasingly become a tradition, Canadian comedy Letterkenny will premiere a new season the day after Christmas.

The Yule log is likely roaring on the fireplace of your TV screen — the holidays are upon us. Hulu is going all-in on their Christmas content with a few holiday features, including the debut of their original movie “It’s a Wonderful Binge.” But if you’re looking for a new television series to keep you busy till Christmas it’s all about the adaptation of Octavia Butler’s “Kindred,” the first television translation of any of Butler’s acclaimed literary works, coming to FX on Hulu this month.
Based on Butler’s 1979 novel, “Kindred” focuses on Dana James, a young Black aspiring writer living in Los Angeles with her husband Kevin Franklin. While in the process of moving, Dana abruptly finds herself tossed between the modern day and 1815 Maryland during the Antebellum period of the South. “Ticket to Paradise” (Universal) debuts on PVOD tomorrow (likely at 19.99), and it can’t come a minute too soon for digital platforms. The absence of major new entries, plus disappointing results for two recent one, has left a void that the George Clooney/Julia Roberts rom-com should happily fill.
For the studio, a film that opened under 50 million dropping on PVOD after the third weekend is standard. Its gross this past weekend was 8.5 million (#3 overall). That’s not great, but that’s more than half of its opening (a normal third weekend might be more like a third of that), with the potentially of it continuing well. Particularly as counter-programming to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Disney), it might hold appeal as an alternative, with the potential of continuing to play through the month.
Holding to normal plans makes sense, though it is a shot to theaters, which could use all the alternative programming around.

“Bodies Bodies Bodies” (Lionsgate): A band of post-adolescent rich kids turn on each other, with violent consequences, in this wildly comic murder mystery. What’s perhaps most wickedly delightful about Halina Reijn’s satire with a body count is the way it plays out like a Gen Z Twitter fights, in real time, with weapons, proving that you can poke at internet culture even in a house where a thunderstorm has knocked out the WiFi.
Also available:
“Bullet Train” (Sony) Assassin Brad Pitt meets many, many other assassins and ne’er-do-wells on a bullet train, and they try to kill each other quickly.
“Beast” (Universal): Man-vs-Nature thriller with Idris Elba trying to protect his daughters from a very large lion intent on protecting his own territory.
“Breaking” (Decal/Bleeker) John Boyega resurrects the spirit of “Dog Day Afternoon” in this true-life bank-robbery drama from Abi Damaris Corbin and Kwame Kwei-Armah.

Tuesday marks the 45th anniversary of Elvis’ death, but the King of Rock’n’Roll still rules. Released last week, “Elvis” (Warner Bros. Discovery/19.99) is #1 at Vudu (ranking by revenue) as well as iTunes and Google Play (listing by transactions). It also represents a new PVOD strategy for Wbd that says much about the studio’s priorities.
With 134 million domestic and still #9 this weekend, “Elvis” is the first Wbd film this year not available on HBO 45 days after release. That’s a radical shift for the studio, which released all films in theaters and on HBO Max day-and-date last year.
With every release, studios with streamers must weigh the values: PVOD at 19.99, allowing it the immediate benefit of retaining a rental price of 14 or more? Or, the more-uncertain potential to attract a subscriber who adds to the value of the streaming service — especially when it will soon wind up there as well?...

Universal is usually strong on VOD charts, but this week it dominates by holding 13 out of 30 possible slots with the just-released “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (19.99) leading the way.
At Netflix, “Uncharted” is #1 and leads several in-house productions including “The Gray Man.” Its 200 million investment stands at #5 in its third week. Despite (or because of?) six months of theatrical play (and 149 million gross), as well as extensive VOD availability, the early-year hit starring Tom Holland may have a longer stay at the top than Netflix originals.
Google Play, which tends to lag several days behind iTunes, still has Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” (19.99) at #1, with “Minions” second; elsewhere, it’s #1. Among Universal”s other releases, are high placements for “The Black Phone” (19.99) and two slots each for “The Bad Guys” (5.99) and new release “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (19.99) from its Focus subsidiary.

Focus Features’ Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris will hit an estimated 1.9 million weekend gross at 980 theaters drawing women with those 55 years of age and older repping 44 of the total. Turnout was best on the coasts for the drama starring Leslie Manville and Isabelle Huppert.
That’s a PSA of 1,939 and a solid open in unpredictable times for specialty. Distributors these days can hope for at least 1 million on circa 1,000 screens, but don’t all make it. And there’s competition for the female demo this weekend with wide-release Where The Crawdads Sing. Rental Condition: Horowitz Navigates Eerie Scenario in Patchwork Psych Thriller
Gwen Guthrie famously crooned, “Ain’t nothin’ goin on but the rent,” back in 1986, but in the era of Airbnb and private rental services, it turns out there’s often the potential for a whole lot of other things going on when you’re staying in a place not your own. This film was originally reviewed out of SXSW 2022 under its previous title, “The Cow.”
In writer-director Eli Horowitz’s labyrinthine, mostly unpredictable thriller “Gone in the Night,” becoming increasingly risk-adverse is one clear symptom of getting older.
Part unlikely friendship tale and part potpourri of genre tropes orchestrated as a parade of red herrings, this debut feature takes on modern culture’s blatant disdain of aging and veneration of youth.
It begins with a common sequence: two people driving on an empty tree-lined road. They are, of course, heading toward an isolated destination in the middle of nowhere. Middle-aged hydroponics expert Kath (Winona Ryder) and her younger, man-child boyfriend Max (an amusingly annoying John Gallagher Jr.) have decided on an impromptu getaway to a rented forest abode as part of an ongoing dynamic in which he constantly dares her to be more adventurous.

A tricky narrative requires deft execution, something that turns out to be well beyond the capabilities of “Gone in the Night.” Presented at SXSW earlier this year as “The Cow,” writer-director Eli Horowitz’s first feature has a wide-eyed Winona Ryder as a woman taken back when her boyfriend goes Awol from a weekend getaway.
What at first looks like a standard missing-person suspense tale turns out to have a more complicated agenda — but it is so haphazardly advanced and clumsily articulated, the film itself seems to be fumbling around for a cohering structure or mood. Vertical Entertainment opens the indie feature on July 15; its star’s renewed visibility via the new Netflix’s “Stranger Things” is likely to lend more of a boost in eventual home-formats release.

Kath is tired: she's getting older and feeling it. Despite a job and business she likes, her younger boyfriend perhaps has the opposite effect of what she had hoped. His boundless energy makes her feel the lack of her own even more, and she knows he's frustrated as she just can't seem to move out of her own, comfortable rut. So when she agrees to an adventure, she hopes it might give her the spark she needs. Well, it does give her a spark, but that soon ignites into quite a blaze. Gone in the Night is something of an atypical sci fi thriller, reading like an extended Twilight Zone episode in content. Given that this is the feature debut of Eli Horowitz, the creator...

Gone In The Night has one of those tastefully protracted opening sequences which work beautifully in the likes of Get Out, in which a couple drive down a long tree-lined road towards an incident which we, the viewers, know will change their lives. The petty arguments which result in raised eyebrows or smiles, the conversational shorthand, the way they manage their physical closeness in that small space all tell us something about their relationship and make it feel real. The relationship, as much as the people themselves, is a central character in the film.
It’s a relationship with is about to be dramatically disrupted. When Kath (Winona Ryder) and Max (John Gallagher Jr) arrive at their destination, a remote cabin in the woods, they find that there’s another couple already there. It appears that the place has been double booked. Kath is tired after the long drive. Max argues with.

Exclusive: Kestrin Pantera’s satirical takedown of the rich elite, Pretty Problems, has been acquired by IFC Films following the pic’s Narrative Spotlight Audience Award win at SXSW. The pic will hit theaters and VOD this year.
IFC is taking all global rights to the pic written by Michael Tennant, Britt Rentschler and Charlotte Ubben, who also star in the movie alongside JJ Nolan, Graham Outerbridge, Alex Klein, Clayton Froning, Katarina Hughes, Vanessa Chester and Amy Maghera. Katya Alexander, Rentschler, Ubben and Tennant also produce.
Lindsay (Rentschler) is as bored with her marriage to Jack (Tennant) as she is working in a boutique — until Cat Flax (Nolan) swoops into the store, showering her with flattery and conspicuous displays of wealth. The pair bond over a bottle of wine, and Lindsay arrives home flushed with excitement about her rich new friend. Jack reluctantly agrees to accept Cat’s invitation for a weekend away,...

Barely over two years ago, the Den of Geek staff was mere days away from heading to Austin when the inevitable happened: SXSW and all its strange and glorious intersections of film, music, technology, games, and more was canceled due to the then only dawning Covid-19 pandemic. A virtual alternative eventually went forward some months later, and there was a virtual SXSW in 2021 as well, but to concede things haven’t been the same in Austin is an understatement.
Which is perhaps why nearly every face, and every person we spoke with, over the last several weeks in the Texas state capital seemed to have an incorrigible grin on their face. Be they fans or filmmakers, actors or music artists, or even just folks walking down the street, the thrill and good vibes was everywhere. SXSW is back where it once belonged.

Eli Horowitz’s The Cow offers a rather convoluted approach to an unfortunately straightforward story. For much of its runtime, however, the film successfully offers the kind of misdirection that best not be spoiled in a review.
The premise seems simple enough—a forty-something couple, botanist Kath (Winona Ryder) and her boyfriend, a former student of hers by way of a continuing education extension course Max (John Gallagher Jr.), drive to a remote cabin in the woods. When they arrive they find the place has been double-booked, leading to a weird compromise: a younger couple inhabiting the cabin agree to let them stay the night. They are Al (Owen Teague), a socially awkward introvert, and the much more outgoing Greta (Brianne Tju).
In the process they make the night a mini-party over wine, drinks, and a bizarre vintage board game they’ve found—Pillow Talkers, which is meant to be...
