Never assume anything with a serial killer
MadValkyrie21 October 2022
The performances in this show just keep getting better and better as not only Sam and Allen's relationship, but every character's relationship, evolves.

While many people begin to progress emotionally through therapy on some level, this episode shows just how psychologically paralyzed Sam is. Despite Allan's best efforts, Sam's habitual anger and insecurity always push their way past any progress he makes. This is particularly obvious through Sam's terrible attempts and humor and meaningful socializing, even with those he loves.

Seeing the impacts Allan has made on not only Sam but Ezra in this episode truly shows how even the smallest gestures or comments can affect a person. Loving the continued interactions with Charlie and the references to Viktor Frankl.

Episode 9

Warning: Spoilers
I did not really get the Auschwitz usage and metaphor here, but maybe it was not meant to be gotten. Maybe it was just part of Alan's struggle here, but either way, it just felt out of place.

There have been a lot of good comedy bits throughout this show's run, usually intentional, but sometimes unintentional, but Sam butchering the joke about three men sentenced to death was certainly a laugh out loud moment.

Again I reiterate the same thing I say every week that I have absolutely no idea how this is all going to end next week and as a fan of peak TV I could not be more excited about that fact.

Loses all of it's direction with misplaced humor and annoying references
James_Callery20 October 2022
I am invested in this story, but after this episode, I found myself frustrated with the direction.

They had a path towards resolution that was well thought out, but then they ended the episode with a rather relevant reference, but ruined it entirely with a colossally misplaced joke and at this point I don't see myself interested in the show anymore.

Carell was acting his butt off, and Gleeson is a fantastic actor in his own right as well. But the writing is taking these two perfect pieces of cake and smushing it together with poop covered hands.

If you are a fan of the story, be my guest and follow through, but this episode epitomizes the downfall of good TV as they try to reference successful tropes.
