So that's it?.... A okay final season to a great series
Dannyboi9415 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Babylon's Ashes is a great episode, it's well directed, acted and written. However like the entire season, it felt very rushed.

Currently its on 9.4 from writing this review, and I'm surprised at that. This final season has been okay, nothing special. I only started watching this show last year, and from seasons 1-4 I've been hooked on the brilliance of this show. It's full of imagination, great acting and visuals. It was also very well paced. Similar to Game of Thrones, this final season felt like it should have been extended to another season. Everything with Marcos and that kid with the alien, felt cramped. You could have dedicated an entire season with these points alone. I remember reading from the show runners the choices to reduce the episodes this season, and one of them was due to visuals. And I must say, I watched this on a 65" 4K TV, and the visuals weren't any more impressive than the previous seasons. Some scenes, one with Amos flying down to that planet, was real bad. It looked cool, but the green screen effects were very obvious.

Also the character of Marcos isn't all that compelling. I understood his motivation, which is a good sign for a villian, but the actor who portrays him, has awful line delivery. He constantly sounds like he's growling a whisper. I wasn't a fan of the actor in the previous seasons either. And his death was very anticlimactic.

This finale leaves a lot of loose ends, such as Filip and others. I hope we get a future miniseries to tie these ends up, and give proper closure to these great characters.

Overall this final season was just, good. Nothing special. The Expanse as a show, is one of the best of its kind. It's a shame they decided to end it so quickly when there is pages upon pages of story yet to tell.

7/10 for the seasons, 9/10 for the series as a whole.

Could have been so much more.

Don't get me wrong, this episode is awesome. But it didn't quite resolve the really interesting plot line, proto-molecule. This show is the greatest sci-fi I've ever seen. I'm sorry to see it go. Hoping we'll see more soon.

"Let's just stay here a minute..."
DrKnockers0514 January 2022
A wholly satisfying series finale to a stellar show, with some almost movie-level action set pieces, some emotional character beats, outstanding music from Clinton Shorter, and a few twists and turns to keep you on your toes.

Not only that but it leaves just enough open for the future. Not at all in a lazy irritating way, but rather in a way that invites debate and invokes intrigue as to what could come next. Whether we'll get those answers soon however remains to be seen...

As far as the story of the Rocinante crew goes, with Drummer, Avasarala, Marco and Filip to boot, this finale delivers on all fronts. Massive props to the talented cast and consistent writers who, at this point in the show's long history, know the characters inside and out. Everyone has their moment in the spotlight, with some of those moments dropping my jaw, some making me tear up, and even one or two doing both to me simultaneously.

It is a shame this brilliant show has come to an end sooner than expected (not as soon as season three fortunately!), but it's ended on a high note in my opinion.

Remember the Cant.

Remember the Roci.

Remember the Expanse.

All good things must come to an end
michalklebs14 January 2022
I think last episode will leave many people disappointed and for different reasons - those who don't know books will complain about lack of closure, book readers could find it rushed. This season had some of the best writing, dialogs and character interactions in entire series being way too short and compact at the same time. This episode highlights it even more. I wish there was more but I also think it is enough. Seasons 2 and 3 won't be matched and the same goes for books (with book 5 closely following). One of the best sci-fi shows ever made. I hope it gets recognition it deserves not only for scientific accuracy but also how smart and meaningful it is. It is important piece of entertainment because it is not just an entertainment.

Tenuous Alliances
Hitchcoc15 January 2022
There should have been eight episodes and the sixth should have begun to draw it to a conclusion. Instead, there is one hour to wrap it all up. And it doesn't do it justice. I could mention a dozen obvious things that have been forgotten or were underdeveloped. This final offering was exciting, although there are times one can't figure who is firing at whom. We are inundated with Computer Graphics with tons of explosions. But the alliances needed to be made more corporeal. I'm not complaining, however, because this has been a joy to experience.

They did it!
ranwulfs14 January 2022
I didn't think they could do it, but this last episode of season 6 - the last episode of the series - wrapped up the story arc quite nicely, and set the stage for further action. Amazon studios has already said there won't be a season 7, but maybe another streaming platform will pick this up. It's an incredibly popular and well written series with production values towering above anything else out there, plus there's plenty of original source material left to do several more seasons. We can only hope.

They left it in the best possible place...
cmmzcfid14 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One of the things I've always admired about The Expanse is it's willingness to stick to it's rules. Our characters rarely come out unscathed, and no one capable of inhuman feats. Drummer just about making it out of the fight. Marco barely getting to fight are a collision. No plan survives contact with the enemy and it's a show that has always been willing to test it's characters, as it did here... there can't really be drama without threat.

... I hope we get another three seasons, I truly do. But even if we don't, the writers managed to walk the line required to both end several seasons worth of plot and still leave enough open to cause demand for a possible renewal.

For example we know the entities are a threat, but we also know that traffic through the ring gates can now be managed to prevent it.

We know there's strange happenings on Laconia, but equally we know that the gate is now "closed" as the other side of the gate is a mine field.

We know Filip made an actual choice for himself. Not to reach out to his mother. Not to kill his father as many were expecting. But to walk away and choose a life for himself.

Appreciate the effort required to delivered this.

And best of all no one elected Bran to lead.

It will be a crime against humanity if ...
ztigr14 January 2022
...someone doesn't pick up this show to continue the story. I think new people are still finding this show. Please one of you social cause gurus, pick up the cause of the Roci and her crew and propel them into the next chapter. I fell in love with these characters because of the actors that portray them. Good shoe must be supported and kept alive. More so for good science fiction.

More or less satisfying
wms-9274116 January 2022
Babylon's Ashes - great title by the way - is a more or less satisfying conclusion to a pretty good science fiction series. The Expanse deserves some credit as better at the actual science than most science fiction shows. They weren't perfect at depicting life in zero or low gravity but they did create believability, which is unusual for television depicting a future. My chief complaint about season six is Laconia; why introduce us to a new place and new characters only to leave us hanging, with unanswered questions? It seems to me that the only answer to that question is that the show's producers were hoping to lure the audience into "wanting more" and hopefully gain a spin-off series. This seems to me unlikely.

So, The Expanse was, at times, very very good indeed, and at times a little tedious. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys space opera, because this show was the best TV offering I've seen in the genre.

A perfect end...to this era of the Expanse
jediofpool14 January 2022
Non-book readers: be patient. There's more coming. Lots of unanswered questions, but they will be on screen eventually. And I encourage everyone to read the books and novellas! The rare show where book lovers love how their books were portrayed on screen. Great job Ty, Daniel, Naren and all the cast and crew for the best sci-fi since DS9, imo.

Alas one of the greatest sci-fi shows comes to an end
terrylarosa14 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I must admit that I thought the first season was good but nothing spectacular but as initial seasons came my admiration for the show grew. The main cast was stellar, incredibly likable and easy to root for. Even Drummer who looked weird became one of my favorites. Nice to see they all made it. Thought Amos or Bobby would buy it but they're just too tough. Ended on a high note with some spectacular action and great writing. Still have no idea what was up with the young girl on that planet or what the point was. Perhaps the books will explain it ( will read book 6 next ). After dozens of trash finales great to see three in the last month ). This, Lost in Space and Cobra Kai ( season finale only ). Kudos to all involved with this marvelous production.

We can't be done!
tennismenace15 January 2022
I absolutely love this show and seasons 1-3 were fantastic (10). Season 4 was a bit slow but good enough (8). But seasons 5-6 were very disappointing (5). Making it all about Marco vs everyone else was just not enough. Obviously the ending was rushed because to only have 6 episodes was no where near enough to wrap up most of the story lines. I've not read any of the books so I know very little about the Ancient Builders of those 1300+ gates and I know even less about who people call the Aggressors. And why did they even show us Laconia when we are left hanging wondering what is going on there? No, I'm sad to say....too many holes...the puzzle is no where completed. But having said all of that, I still love the show, the characters, and especially the cool CGI effects. I really felt like I was in outer space watching this. This may be wishful thinking but I sure hope someone, like Netflix or Hulu, come along and pick this back up for more. Too bad Sci Fi always seems to get the short end of the stick. Cheers...

I was hoping for 14 more episodes about Filip and Marco not getting along
ssarigollu18 January 2022
The Expanse has a breathtaking world building. There is enough material to make 10 seasons of a GoT level experience just focusing on the conflicts between MCRN, UN & The Belt. Protomolecule? Same amount of material there. Such a unique and scientific basis merged with the imagination that is the colonies and beyond the rings as well!

What do we do? We follow the horrible actors portraying Marco & Filip while they pretty much do the same family drama conversation for 2 seasons. The finale? Deus ex machina.

This feels like going to a Michelin Star restaurant and eating french fries all night, then go back home.

Disappointing.

Some of the best sci-fi TV around.
lazgarcia14 January 2022
All I can really say is that was honestly a satisfying ending for the show with just enough left that it leaves things open for the future. I think an important sentiment to keep in mind is one that Ty Franck has repeated often, we were lucky to get this far. The Expanse is a great title, an amazing IP, but the show will always be an adaptation of the books. And keeping that in mind, I am entirely satisfied with what we were given knowing the circumstances placed on the writers of the last season. Of course I'd like there to be more, but that was a great send-off. The episode itself felt rushed in some aspects but I enjoyed the ride with the context of the books. I hope there's more in the future, but if there isn't, I'm okay with where it left off as well.

About Armor and Dogs
Tron7922 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's the morning after watching the final episode late last night. I had a thought of Detective Joe Miller, played by Thomas Jane. I realized how much I missed seeing his character. There was something about his story in the early seasons that kept me glued to The Expanse. I'm a sucker for a good mystery and a well developed character. I remember his unique haircut, his hat, and little scenes like the one in Julie's apartment. While investigating her disappearance, Joe took the opportunity to wash his hair, since water was so scarce on Ceres. As we raced towards the endgame in season 6, much of the mystery was over and it was mostly about action. The action was very cool. I loved the visuals of Bobbie's assault on the guns. The rocket chairs were bizarre! How do you fly a chair?? They did leave a few mysteries out there, such as what will happen with those entities. The final credits shows the ring space entities changing colors and possibly getting angrier! They left the mystery of the little girl with her zombie brother.

Joe Miller was one of the few main characters allowed to die (even though he still may be out there in a different dimension with Julie). Season 6 had too much plot armor for me. The cast and show runners were comparing the final season with Game of Throne's final season. Game of Thrones had its share of plot armor in season 8, but not nearly as much as The Expanse. Season 6 has about as happy of an ending as you could possibly write. Just about all of our favorites are still alive and happy. I thought either Bobbie or Amos should have died in the battle. Even Alex would have lived last season if it wasn't for Cas Anvar's off screen troubles. I thought perhaps they might kill off Chrisjen Avasarala, since the soldier made a comment about her taking a risk being up at the front. Peaches does find out she only has a few years to live, but at least for now she has a great relationship with Amos and feels at home as an important member of the crew. Even Naomi's son Filip managed to escape!

I guess there is something to be said for happy endings. It was satisfying seeing the crew sitting together around the table. It would have been a bummer for them to let Amos or Bobbie get blasted out of their chair before even making it down to the fight, but probably much more realistic. But forget about the realism. They were flying chairs after all! So I can see arguments for at least some plot armor. We do need some happiness in our escapism. The world can be dark and full of terrors in real life.

And what's with the parents down on that planet? Would you immediately try to kill your son, even if he comes back as a zombie? My first reaction wouldn't have been to stab him! I think I would have taken a few minutes to find out what happened. I can see why the little girl wanted to get away from them!

Thank you Amazon Studios
Waldorf-197914 January 2022
Some people forget The Expanse was saved by Amazon Studios. We got some good seasons and a proper ending.

Is it perfect? No. Could it have been a better closure? Probably.

But compare this with all the current shows from the last couple of years including Disney's and Netflix's with their seemingly endless pockets. This was great.

Whatever the reason this show didn't make it to wider audiences it was an astounding one. Imagine if we had a truncated ending mid way like when SciFi decided to cancel it.

So thank you, Amazon Studios.

(BTW Prime suggestions are broken, I keep hiding other shows like TWOT and still The Expanse didn't show up)

The anti-GOT ending we deserved
Borgenschatz14 January 2022
After watching many season finales and series finales of some of the biggest shows on TV. I can honestly say that this one nails the ending perfectly, and oh boy does it nail it!

From a careful build up of dialogue to the climax that had me gripping the edge of my sofa; heart pounding against my chest. To an actually satisfying conclusion, tying up enough loose ends but still leaving some open for a potential future.

It's been a long time since a show has honored and treated its fanbase so well.

As good of an ending we could get with the somewhat rushed last season. I especially enjoyed the way the killed off Marco and his gang - being smart and win without battle is the key to any war.

All Good Things
Turanic14 January 2022
So Expanse lasted 6 years, almost as long as an average pre 2005 Star Trek, which is a pretty great result considering how easily new space Sci Fi shows died in the last decade ... What about the episode, well it's pure awesomeness, you know , like all the action that you like, space strategy, fleet battles, Mass Effect Style station assault. The episode feels like everything a space opera should be and you don't want to stop watching... So, how to rewatch Expanse : seasons 1-3, few best episodes from seasons 4-5, then S 6 and that way it's a a crazy ride from beginning to end... All in all, it's and end of an Era, like it was an end of an Era when Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5 ended. Nobody knows when shall we get next show like this, maybe in 5 years, maybe in 10, maybe never considering how generic tv has become with gender politics pushed over the story everywhere. So enjoy while you can... And you want to see what happened next, just watch Babylon 5, Expanse is pretty much a prequel to it ...

Oh my, sheer brilliance!
FireproofAngel14 January 2022
Over these six seasons, one develops such a deep bond with these characters and the finale (Hopefully just for now) was emotionally satisfying.. that is a VERY difficult thing to do. Kudos to the whole team that put this show together.

Sacrifice, reconciliation, friendship, the complexity of being a parent/child/politico/team player, moral paradoxes, space exploration, the depth of sharing a meal or a minute together!... the list can just go on and on. Best this gen effects on TV to boot. Actors were fantastic, scares me to think anyone else could do these roles. What can I say? ... Thank you to the writer of the source material and the huge team that made the best sci-fi show EVER.

One final request, don't change a thing.

A bit frustrated, but still love The Expanse. :)
dinoplahutnik14 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The show in total is a 10 for me. The ending season is a six, unfortunately. This episode an eight. It is both rushed and not developed at the same time. Some say that uncompleted story arcs are here if the show is to be picked up by someone else. Sorry, that is just plain rude and not how it is done.

Laconia arc (they have gods to kill?), Filip Nagata flying around (seeking redemption?), Clarissa's illness, those are all things that should have been finalised before the end. Or they should not have been started at all. What is the added value of announcing that Clarissa will die in five years? What happened with the protomolecule?! :)

If this was to be the final season, a 10 episode season was deserving. At least. This would give them enough time to tie up everything neatly. Actually, this "ending" is perfect for another season or a full movie. Like Naomi said, "let's just stay here for a minute", but maybe you can come back...a couple of years in the future? :)

Decent but I was expecting more
Behnam-A14 January 2022
The final was full of CGI and action scenes. The story, however, although was interesting, was not told greatly. I was expecting more clearance about the rings and the entities. Also, the story was very compact and rushed.

I can accept this ending but I wished a better one.

A (too) happy ending with an unfinished storyline
jovanzeliczema16 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A huge battle scenes with some very questionable CGI (Amos flying towards railguns was painful to watch). Other than that, to me it just wasn't a satisfying end. All of the characters survive easily, even though some of them should've been dead. I thought that Clarissa would maybe sacrifice herself once she found out she was terminally ill, but no.

What's really annoying is the Laconia storyline that's just left completely unfinished. What about the zombie boy? Ooh, I guess we'll have a sequel/spinoff series about that. Don't have high hopes on that one.

Overall, a very meh finish of the series. Since I watched Dexter: New Blood recently and that was a complete disaster, my standards are pretty low now...

So few shows stick the landing
Jason2432114 January 2022
But this one did. Resoundingly. This is not just one of the best sci-fi shows of all time. This is one of the best SHOWS of all time. Unlike Game of Thrones, this one actually landed; in one of the best finales I have ever seen. Anyone on the fence can confidently pick up this show with the knowledge that the writers executed a full and fleshed out vision and story arc from beginning to end. Amazing.
