The documentary is built from ten recorded interviews; seven were filmed in 6K and 4K digital and three of them were audio recordings only. When dealing with subjects on which there are still many prejudices to be demolished, three people preferred not to be recorded. To project the feelings and experiences of these interviews, 180 drawings were made that synthesize and reflect their feelings in a creative way, from the respect for communicating their essence.
The original idea of creating this documentary arose when the director began working in Teruel as a new professor at the University of Zaragoza. Shortly after arriving, all of Spain suffered a snowstorm called "Filomena" that isolated many populations for several days. In those days, locked up and away from his family, Burgos read an article in the local newspaper about "Accompanying Teruel" and the volunteer program to combat unwanted loneliness.
To form a team with volunteer students of Fine Arts, Professor Burgos wrote an email with the subject: "the strange mail"
"The loneliness of those who do not exist" is made entirely by students of the Degree in Fine Arts of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Teruel; Marta Burriel León, Sheila Judith Calvo Díaz, Ángel Celiméndiz Benedí, Elena Patón, Adrián Gimeno Jarque, Ana Luque Albert, Carlos + Romano, Xavi Urrios and Jowita Tyszka. The project is led by Alfonso Burgos, a teacher from the same center.
"The loneliness of those who do not exist" was shot with teams of students in rotating shifts using two cameras; Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K and Canon EOS R.
The total footage of the interviews reached nine hours of recordings. Only the interview with Soledad López took 88 minutes.
