Duck Dynasty became a global phenomenon when the reality series premiered in 2012. The Robertson family was catapulted to stardom as millions of viewers followed the famous duck hunters and their personal lives in the heart of Louisiana. The A&e series ran for 11 seasons until 2017. The Duck Dynasty fandom remains strong to this day, and many have wondered about a possible revival. Willie Robertson opened up about why a Duck Dynasty revival is not in the cards. “We are looking into some different TV ideas,” Robertson told TV Insider while promoting The Blind. “But to recapture what we did before is really not gonna happen. Sadly, everyone’s gotten older, and we’re all in different places now. Our cast has expanded drastically. I have seven grandkids now, so we’ve got some ideas.” Even though a Duck Dynasty revival is off the table, the Robertsons aren’t retreating from the spotlight.

Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson shows a new side of dad Phil Robertson in The Blind, streaming exclusively on Great American Pure Flix. For Willie, telling his father’s incredible life story and the love he shares with his longtime wife Kay Robertson was “important” for Duck Dynasty fans to see onscreen. “[Duck Dynasty] is really the result of something,” Willie tells TV Insider. “It’s a result of their marriage, staying together, and our family staying together. We really felt like it’s an unbelievable story. It’s a story of redemption and faith. And now after 50 years, you’ve seen what has come out of that, especially with the TV show.” Willie executive produced the film alongside wife Korie Robertson through their production company Tread Lively. They went straight to the source to make sure they portrayed Phil and Kay’s relationship honesty. “It’s hard to go back and relive all that,...

The German Film Academy has announced the movies in competition this year for the German Film Awards, the local equivalent of the Oscars.
Matthias Glasner’s epic family drama Dying, Timm Kröger’s experimental sci-fi feature The Universal Theory, and In the Blind Spot, Ayşe Polat’s documentary-style conspiracy thriller set in modern-day Turkey, are among the favorites for this year’s awards, called the Lolas.
Dying, which stars Lars Eidinger as a classical conductor with an extremely dysfunctional family, picked up nominations in every major category, including best film, best director and best screenplay nominations for Glasner, a best actor nom for Eidinger and a best actress nomination for Corinna Harfoch, who plays Eidinger’s mother. In total, the film is up for nine Lolas.
The Universal Theory, a black-and-white drama about the multiverse, is also in the running for the best film Lola, and Kröger is up for best director.

Fathom Events, the company best known for bringing theater, opera, live events and concerts to screens, is currently on track for gross revenues of over $93 million. Despite the fact that the exhibition space has yet to fully recover from the Covid pandemic, Fathom is enjoying the best year in its history — it will surpass sales from 2019, previously the highest-grossing year in company history, by 116%. For further context, Fathom reported revenues of $68 million in 2022.
So what’s behind the surge? Fathom is chalking up the strong results to a pivot in business strategy for the company, one that saw it introduce a “specialty distribution” model. The goal was to bring a wider array of content to cinemas beyond the productions of the Metropolitan Opera that helped put Fathom on the map. It’s one that saw Fathom distribute faith-based films like “The Blind,” as well as release episodes of “The Chosen,...

Five recent releases debuted on different VOD charts this past week, and for the second week in a row, three different films took #1 among the three we follow. Two of these took #1 slots, with “Sound of Freedom” (Angel) atop Vudu and #2 at iTunes, while “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount) reversing those positions at those two sites.
Google Play, which often lags behind the others seems particularly slow this week, with “The Equalizer 3” (Sony) still #1 even though it doesn’t make the top five at the other two. And “Paw Patrol” ranks only fourth, with “Sound of Freedom” seventh.
Netflix is back in Sony streamer mode, with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” #1 and “Insidious: The Red Door” #2 (both new this week). But two recent festival-premiered originals took the two new spots. “Sly” (Stallone of course), a documentary, and “Nyad,” about the pioneering swimmer Diane Nyad with Annette Bening, are third and fourth respectively there.

The Blind is now the most successful release in the history of Fathom Events, as the faith-based feature has grossed $15.7 million at the North American box office as of Monday.
The film is Fathom’s first to see a longer theatrical run than its traditional event cinema releases. Originally slated for an eight-day run as part of Fathom’s new specialty distribution model, it was extended twice, Fathom said, and held a steady position in the top 10 for the duration of its more than three weeks in cinemas.
The Blind was produced by Tread Lively and Gnd Media Group. Andrew Hyatt directs the back-story of the star of Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson. In 1960s Louisiana, Robertson falls in love and starts a family, but his demons soon threaten to tear everyone apart. As he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, he ultimately finds redemption in an unlikely place.

Taylor Swift‘s “experiment” to release a 2-hour-48-minute concert movie based on her “Eras” tour turned out to be quite a boon for the box office in a slower fall season. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was announced in late August, shortly after the five L.A. concerts that were filmed for the movie, directed by Sam Wrench. Theater chain AMC took the distribution rights, working with Variance to get it into other theaters, with it ultimately ending up in 3,855 theaters, including 377 IMAX screens.
The movie’s weekend began with $2.8 million in last-minute Thursday previews, only announced by Swift on Wednesday night at her L.A. premiere with tickets going on sale Thursday morning. The movie’s $39 million Friday (including those previews) was more in line with advance presales reported, but business dropped on Saturday, so that AMC only reported an...

Despite strong pre-sales, Taylor Swift was no match for Joker at the box office as it failed to take down that film’s $96.2 million opening to become the highest domestic opening for the month of October. With $96 million, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is the second highest opening ever for the month of October. Although with just $202,337 separating the two films, it is possible we see a new champ when final numbers are reported tomorrow although some studios think the film will come in closer to the $94 million mark. Despite missing the October record, the film officially became the highest grossing concert film ever at the domestic box office as it beat out Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’s entire domestic gross by about $23 million. Despite the amount of horror movies released in September, October seemed like a better time for the genre to get a bump with the latest attempt to revive a horror classic. That wasn’t really the case. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There were indeed some hopes that the David Gordon Green-directed “The Exorcist: Believer” would be the good start for a new trilogy based on the William Friedkin-directed 1973 adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s novel, a major theatrical blockbuster at the time that became a horror classic. Green even brought back Ellen Burstyn from the original movie, joining Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd and Jennifer Nettles, as a continuation of Friedkin’s film.
Despite anticipation for another solid “requel” ala Green’s 2018 “Halloween,” “Believer” was universally panned by critics with an awful 23% on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its release into 3,663 theaters by Universal. It...

It wasn’t her intention, but Taylor Swift saved this weekend as well as ones still to come.
“The Era Tour” concert film opens Friday with over $100 million in estimated presales, but it already forced “The Exorcist: Believer” (Universal), originally set for October 13, to move up a week and get out of the way.
As a result, the sequel to William Friedkin’s smash hit dominated this weekend with $27.2 million. That’s more than double the #2 title, “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount), with $11.8 million.
All told, this weekend grossed around $75 million. Without “Exorcist,” and assuming other titles would pick up some of the slack, that number would have been closer to $55 million — and close to the worst of 2023. Instead, it improved $16 million (27 percent) over last year, which also included Indigenous Peoples’/Columbus Day on Monday. Year to date remains up about 26 percent.
Another way to find a positive spin...

The Exorcist: Believer saw a first weekend take of $27.2 million, coming in under even the most modest of projections, including our own low end $30 million prediction, yet still having the best opening of the franchise. That number represents a near $10 million improvement over the last theatrically released Exorcist film: 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning ($18 million). That’s the good news, the bad news is that even with a franchise best opening and a reported budget of just $30 million before advertising, this opening is still a fairly sizable disappointment for the studio.
This film has gotten some absolutely horrendous reviews, including a 4/10 from our own Chris Bumbray who called it “awful.” Those reviews mixed with its horrible 54% audience score means this one will likely sink in the coming weeks. “The Exorcist: Believer,” a reboot in the legacy horror franchise, opened atop box office charts despite falling short of expectations.
The film, from Universal and Blumhouse, collected $27.2 million from 3,663 North American venues over the weekend, below estimates that suggested a debut closer to $35 million. “Believer” also opened at the international box office with $17.8 million for a global start of $45.1 million. The “Exorcist” sequel cost $30 million, so it’s well-positioned in its theatrical run.
But reviews (23% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience scores (“C” CinemaScore) were terrible, so the studio may need to reconsider its strategy before the next installment opens in 2025. Universal spent a staggering $400 million to buy the rights to the terrifying property, with plans to at least develop a trilogy around these supernatural battles with the devil. They need moviegoers to feel invested in the series beyond this installment to justify that massive deal.

The Exorcist: Believer had no trouble delivering a first-place finish at the weekend box office with an estimated $27.2 million from 3,663 theaters. While a respectable opening in this climate, the R-rated film came in below expectations domestically as it tries to revive the franchise after Universal reportedly paid a hefty $400 million for rights.
Overseas, the pic started off with $17.9 million from its first 52 markets for a global start of $45.1 million.
The David Gordon Green-directed horror pic hits theaters exactly 50 years after the first Exorcist opened and made cinema history, grossing nearly $450 million at the global box office before adjusting for inflation. Directed by William Friedkin, the film was based on the book by William Peter Blatty and starred Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn.
The Believer recently had to move up its release by one week after Taylor Swift announced that her new concert film, The Eras Tour, will open across the globe on Oct.

Nearly 50 years after William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” landed in theaters to leg out a run as the highest-grossing feature of 1973, a new sequel to it is opening on top of the box office. Universal’s “The Exorcist: Believer” compelled audiences to the tune of an $11.9 million opening day from 3,663 locations, a number including $2.85 million in previews.
The Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment production should have no trouble taking the top spot through the weekend, though “Believer” now looks to be debuting lower than its more optimistic projections, which had forecast a $30 million gross over the three-day frame. The horror entry should take in around $28 million through Sunday.
The film is also doing much less business than director David Gordon Green’s last spin on a classic horror franchise at Blumhouse; his 2018 “Halloween” became a smash hit with a $76 million debut. “Believer” also won’t be matching the 1973 original’s run,...

“Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount) topped “Saw X” (Lionsgate) by a healthy $5 million ($23 million to $18 million) on a weekend when either seemed feasible at #1. However, the order here isn’t the real story.
While a “Paw”/”Saw” convergence isn’t exactly the second coming of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” it’s still two films with very different appeal that clicked on the same weekend and will end up in profit.
“The Creator” (Disney) ranked as #3 with $14 million, which isn’t the problem so much as its expense. The Gareth Edwards-directed sci-fi actioner in which humans battle AI drew praise for its visual design at a price, but a modest debut for the New Regency production is a setback for those hoping creativity and originality might launch this higher.
Still, that does mean three films grossed over $14 million in September, which is by no means a sure thing. The total gross looks like around $86 million,...

Four new movies ended a month full of sequels, some of which did better than others, but in this case the sequels ended up doing better than most expected, and there were some bona fide surprises. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The big winner of the weekend was Paramount Pictures’ “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” the first family film to get a theatrical release in months. It entered theaters with an 81% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it was essentially a review-proof movie with name-brand value among parents with kids. It opened in second place on Friday with $6.8 million but then grossed a solid $23 million (estimated) for the weekend. It received an “A” CinemaScore, which was not surprising due to its appeal to those same parents with kids.
Lionsgate released “Saw X,” the 10th chapter in the horror franchise that just won’t die, into 3,262 theaters on Friday.

Two new releases and one wide expansion were no match for the animated puppies of Paw Patrol as their newest movie Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie easily snagged first place with $23 million. That number represents a nearly $10 million increase over the $13.1 million earned by 2021’s Paw Patrol: The Movie in its debut. It would seem this sequel has earned its mighty moniker.
The film has garnered some solid critical reviews with the consensus being that this movie is a great way to introduce younger audiences to the big screen experience while the parents of those younger audience members took to the internet to propel the film to a solid 94% audience score and a great A cinemascore. With no family films hitting screens until November 17 when Trolls Band Together opens, you can expect this one to have decent legs, although I don’t expect it to play as well as other...

Happy pups prevailed at the domestic box office this weekend as Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie scared off Saw X and The Creator with $23 million from 3,989 theaters in a needed win for the family marketplace.
The news was just as good overseas, where the sequel flexed its muscle in opening to $23.1 million from 45 markets for a global bow of $46.1 million, a 70 percent uptick over the last pic. Parents and kids made up 90 percent of the audience in North America, where the sequel over-indexed in most regions save for the western part of the U.S.
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which cost a lean $30 million to produce before marketing, follows the success of 2021’s Paw Patrol: The Movie that helped solidify Paramount chief Brian Robbins’ standing. That film opened to $13.1 million domestically before turning into a sleeper hit and grossing $140 million globally, a notable figure considering the pandemic and a day-and-date debut on Paramount+.

Duck Dynasty is back with a movie, The Blind, telling of family patriarch Phil Robertson’s (played by Aaron von Andrian) younger years living in Louisiana during the 1960s. The film, which opens in select movie theaters on September 28, is an honest depiction as it touches on the Duck Commander creator’s past struggles with alcoholism and the toll his infidelity took on his marriage with Kay (played by Amelia Eve) before he turned everything around. “Long before Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson became a reality TV star, he fell in love with Miss Kay and started a family, but his demons threatened to tear their lives apart,” the official synopsis reads. “Set in the backwoods swamps of 1960s Louisiana, The Blind shares never-before-revealed moments in Phil’s life as he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, ultimately finding redemption in an unlikely place. This stunning cinematic journey...

Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the co-founders of The Blind Side financier Alcon Entertainment, who also served as producers for the supposedly true-life family drama, have addressed controversy stemming from a recent lawsuit filed by pic’s subject Michael Oher, claiming there have been “many mischaracterizations and uninformed opinions” put out about the situation, and that the film they made is “as true today as it was 14 years ago.”
“The Blind Side is verifiably authentic and will never be a lie or fake,” the pair stated, “regardless of the familial ups and downs that have occurred subsequent to the film.”
Former NFL star Oher’s petition filed in Tennessee court alleges that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the couple depicted in the film as his good-hearted adoptive parents, tricked him into a conservatorship to secure legal authority over business deals in his name, depriving him of profits from the film...

Over the past week, some have called for Sandra Bullock to return the Academy Award she won for playing Leigh Anne Tuohy in 2009’s The Blind Side – and not because she didn’t deserve it. Rather, the outcry stems from former pro football player Michael Oher claiming that Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy never actually adopted him and instead used the story for financial gains, a discovery he made nearly 15 years after The Blind Side came out.
So, why are people calling for Sandra Bullock to return her Oscar for The Blind Side, which she won by beating out the likes of Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren? We’re afraid the attempts to find any logic within the situation have come up with absolutely nothing, since obviously (or so we thought…) the reception of The Blind Side and the numerous accolades Sandra Bullock received (also including a Golden Globe and...

Duck Dynasty and the Metropolitan Opera are two very different cultural phenomena, but they have at least one thing in common: Fathom Events, the unique and prolific theatrical distributor based in Denver.
Over the past 20 years, Fathom has mastered the art of finding audiences for one-off cinematic events, from live broadcasts of opera, stage plays and live concert pics to anniversary rereleases of classic Hollywood films. A groundbreaking partnership with The Metropolitan Opera put Fathom on the map. Launched in 2006, The Met: Live in HD program, which sees about 10 operas a year beamed into theaters on Saturdays and Wednesdays, has generated more than $205 million in box office sales and consistently lands on a weekend’s top 10 list.
The company has also made a big impression in the faith-based and anime spaces (again, two disparate genres). Fathom ranked No. 9 on the list of top distributors at the 2022 domestic box office, with...

The short is directed by his younger brother Harry Holland and also features Lindsay Duncan (“Birdman”).

There’s been no shortage of moral support for the Ukrainian cause since Russia’s unprovoked invasion last year, and the country’s beleaguered screen industry has gotten a much-needed boost from foreign buyers. Ukrainian documentaries are doing brisk business as global audiences search for broader context on the conflict, while even narrative features that hit the festival circuit last year are finding a home with specialty distributors.
As the war drags into its second year, however, the Ukrainian industry is at an inflection point. Russia’s relentless attacks on critical infrastructure continue to wreak havoc on the country’s power grid and force film crews to work under constant threat. The theatrical market has collapsed, broadcasters and streaming platforms are virtually bankrupt, and public money that might have once bolstered film and TV production is being diverted to the war effort instead.
There is an awareness, too, among Ukrainian...
