They're alive! The plane passengers that is. In fact, they were never totally dead it turns out according to a government doctor at a secure facility where the passengers have been brought. They had some bizarre sub-sub level of activity going on that only made them seem dead. None of them seem to remember anything after taking off from Miami except the air marshal who remembers Sean getting up after the fasten seatbelt light went on.
Michael Buchanan is also awake and Sterling interrogates him, sternly asking him to remember anything about his captors. All he knows is that they killed his wife in front of him and threatened to kill Leila if he didn't hijack the plane. He knows that one of them was named Vicky. He begs Sterling to find his daughters.
One of them has been carted to a new location, bound, and dumped in a cellar. That would be Leila.
The VP gets all up in Sterling's grill about interrogating Buchanan. But Sterling points out he's running the show. The VP reiterates he has a problem with this. Sterling doesn't care, but he does point out that the idea of him being involved in a plot to assassinate the president-- whatever their differences-- makes no sense since that would put the VP in charge.
Back at the White House the Prez is telling Lisa about the craziness of the passengers and can't believe it. Suddenly a phone in their son David's backpack rings. It's Thomas who calls and demands the release of the detainees or people will die.
Sean and Agent Collier are on the run searching for Vicky rogue-style since they know her captors are monitoring the FBI. They get a wi-fi signal and get into government system and find Vicky used one of her aliases recently in Lubbock, TX.
(We flash back to 5 years earlier to Sean meeting Leila's parents and little sister for the first time on Thanksgiving. Michael asks about Sean's parents and he's evasive. He finally admits they basically abandoned him as a child and once he graduated high school he never spoke to them again.)
Back in the present Leila overhears Vicky and D.B. Sweeney talking about their orders and saying she'll be dead in 2 hours. She finds a piece of broken glass in a corner and starts digging at her ropes.
Vicky and DB Sweeney note how savvy Sean is and how he managed to disable the GPS tracker on the car and his phone.
Sean and Collier arrive at what may be the house, but, of course it's not. Instead it turns out to be Vicky's mom's house. At first she tries to claim she doesn't know Vicky but they have records to prove Vicky's paying the rent. Sean also realizes there's a child in the house and finds Adam, Vicky's son. He ID's Vicky as his mom on Sean's phone and asks when he'll see her again. Sean says he doesn't know but he takes a picture of Adam and promises to show it to Vicky. Her mom finally gives up that she has a number for her. It's a Colorado exchange and Sean and Collier head back to the car to get moving again.
Vicky says she got the call to off Leila and she wants to do it, instead of DB Sweeney. As she goes to make it happen Leila begs for her life. Vicky isn't having it. Finally, when the gun is to her head Leila breaks free of her bonds and slugs Vicky, grabs her gun, and hightails it out of the cellar. When Vicky gives chase Leila shoots her. She then runs into the street and flags down a cop who brings her to the station house in Snyder, TX. He lets her call Sean but of course, just as the call comes through Sean's phone battery is dying so he doesn't get it. She leaves a message saying she's safe, asking him to come get her and saying she loves him.
We flash back to that first meeting on Thanksgiving again. Mom gives Leila her seal of approval on Sean. Michael welcomes Sean to the family by bonding with him over a very rare scotch, gift from a friend. (They show us the label, this seems significant.)
In the present, the Prez is hopping mad the aliens got so close to his son and orders Simon to beef up security for David and Lisa. He and Sterling go over their plan such as it is. Sterling says they're as ready as they can be. The Prez points out that folks who can make a plane magically disappear probably have capabilities they aren't ready for. Sterling points out that they can't transport detainees or else they already would have, they have to talk to Sophia again.
We flash back to 12 months ago and Lisa telling the Prez she's worried about meeting Sophia and how she's going to talk to her. They have her over for dinner to the White House. It turns out she's a vegan. The Prez and Lisa tell the story of how they met, their mothers, who came over on the boats together were friends. They fell out of touch and 30 years later met up again and introduced their kids to each other. Sophia is touched by this and the fact that a poor immigrant woman gave birth to the U.S. president. She says she hopes one day she can sit around a table and tell the tale of how her kind came here and the tale won't be anymore strange than coming over on a fishing boat from Cuba.
Back in the present she's still not talking to the president. She says she can't. He says she won't. He thinks she's pulling all the strings and had one of her own killed-- William-- because he was willing to talk. She gives a start at this, giving herself away a bit. He says if she's really his friend, she will help him. She says the man really pulling the strings is Thomas who is intelligent, charismatic, and a natural leader. She says they haven't always seen eye to eye about adapting, he's less patient and more impulsive than her. She doesn't know where he is but says whatever he wants, the Prez should give it to him. The Prez says he asked for Sophia and the detainees but he can't have it. She begs him for the safety of human beings to do what he says.
Michael Buchanan wakes up in the government hospital with a killer nose bleed. All the survivors start having them too. The doctors suit up worrying it might be some kind of alien infectious disease.
Back at the police station a cop offers Leila some water. When he goes in the back to get it he meets up with Vicky and DB Sweeney. The cop says she called Sean but he didn't pick up but she left a message. Then we get a quick flashback of Leila being dumped and then we see Vicky and DB's angle on it: he left her the piece of glass so she can loose her bonds, Vicky watched her dig away at them, she loaded her gun with blanks so when Leila shot her she would be fine but think Vicky was dead. We come back to the present and the cop who picked Leila up is dead in the hallway. The evil cop, DB Sweeney and Vicky, all in cahoots, hope Sean gets the message because otherwise they don't know how they'll find him. Vicky says he'll get it and come. Vicky calls someone and says the plan to get Sean is in motion. The man on the other end says when Sean gets there to take care of him, this time for good.
