James S. Murray (aka "Murr") is best known for his improv comedy skills on Impractical Jokers, but he's also an avid horror and sci-fi fan, and he's penned the new book Awakened with Darren Wearmouth. The first of a planned trilogy, Awakened starts with a deadly mystery surrounding a new subway line and a terror that is unleashed on New York City, and you can get a preview of what's to come in our exclusive excerpt:
"After years of waiting, New York's newest subway line is finally ready, an express train that connects the city with the burgeoning communities across the Hudson River. The shining jewel of this state-of-the-art line is a breathtaking visitors’ pavilion beneath the river. Major dignitaries, including New York City’s Mayor and the President of the United States, are in attendance for the inaugural run, as the first train slowly pulls in.

Many people know James Murray as “Murr” from Impractical Jokers, but he’s tackling serious horror / sci-fi in his upcoming book, Awakened, due out on June 26th. Ahead of the book's release, I caught up with James to talk about his favorite movies, starting Awakened 14 years ago, teaming up with Darren Wearmouth, and the Awakened Experience taking place in New York City:
You’re obviously well-known for your comedy work, but it sounds like you’ve always had a love of horror and sci-fi. What are some of your favorites and what did you watch growing up?
James Murray: I was obsessed with Alien and Aliens, of course, and The Terminator and Terminator 2—that’s one of the only movies that are better than the original. I would argue that Superman 2 is better than Superman as well, but hey. Event Horizon is one of my favorite movies.
It’s so under-appreciated.

Two decades to the year after Edward Carnby first got in over his head in the original 3D survival horror, the game's designer, Frederick Raynal took the stage at Gdc 2012 to discuss how he and the team at Infogrames created the PC classic that inspired Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and quite by accident, the Uwe Boll movie with Christian Slater.
"If you see a dog burst through a window [in another game], remember that we had this eight polygon bird coming through the first polygon window," Raynal joked about an early scare from Alone In The Dark, referencing one of the first Resident Evil's biggest shocks several years later. Raynal detailed the evolution of the first game in the first 3D survival horror game, keeping pace with changes in PC hardware and realizing the first adventure of series protagonist Edward Carnby.

This isn’t too surprising. Deadline Hollywood reports that Mikael Håfström, director of horror-tinged flicks like 1408 and The Rite, will be at the helm of Wake for Hammer Films. The film will more or less be a present-day interpretation of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Christopher Borrelli is on board for screenwriting duties.

The cinematic treatment of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde has been varied. Fredric March’s benchmark portrayal of the character in 1931 remains the high water mark, though Spencer Tracy has tried his hand at it and the less said about 1995′s Dr Jekyll & Ms Hyde the better. The main point here is that it has been a really long time since the story was told well on the big screen. Cameos for Jekyll & Hyde in Lxg and Van Helsing did what is a fascinating and complex character scant justice and so Hammer Films enter the fray.
Off the back of Let Me In, The Resident, Wakewood and The Woman In Black, Hammer are now eying a remake of the Jekyll & Hyde tale, currently working with the title “Wake”. Such an unarresting title seems an odd choice, given how well known the name Jekyll is, but to each their own.

Mikael Håfström ("1408") found himself another thriller to sink his teeth into. He just signed up to direct the upcoming film "Thriller" from Hammer Films. The thriller was written by Matt Sand and Christopher Borelli. Producing the film is Chris Cowles and Chris Fenton under H2F along with David Alpert and Stephen Emery from Circle of Confusion."Wake" focuses on a sociopath who is incapable of feeling fear, but not much else is known about the plot at the moment. Håfström recently directed the Anthony Hopkins-starring thriller "The Rite" which was released in theaters earlier this year.Source: The Hollywood Reporter - Heat Vision Blog...

Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom just can’t stop giving into the desire to direct horror movies, it would seem. For though he has alternated between scare fests and more straightforward thrillers like Derailed, he keeps coming back to supernatural tales of terror. His last film was exorcism chiller The Rite and now he’s signed on to make a new movie for Hammer Films called Wake. Not much is known about the plot right now, but The Wrap reports that it’ll feature a modern day take on Jekyll and Hyde and will feature a character that shoves the boundaries and, more importantly, feels no fear. Much like every iteration of Robert Louis Stevenson’s tale, we’re guessing this leads to some very bad things happening. The Vatican Tapes’ Christopher Borrelli dreamed up the concept originally, but Hafstrom will work from a new draft of the script cranked out...

Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom is set to direct a new horror thriller for Hammer Films called Wake, which is described "a modern day Jekyll and Hyde who knows no bounds." Hammer is making a comeback, they have been making gothic style horror films since 1934. In their later years they started making Sci-fi, thrillers, Film Noir and even comedies. During the 60's and 70's Hammer dominated the Horror film market, then in the 80's they kind of disappeared. The production company made they're return with the remake of Let Me In, and now it looks like they have found life again.
Hafstrom has directed films such as the Stephen King adaptation of 1408, which I really enjoyed. He also directed the Anthony Hopkins film The Rite, which turned out better than I expected. Christopher Borrelli screenwriter of The Vatican Tapes wrote the screenplay for Wake, and a rewrite came from Deepwater Horizon screenwriter Matt Sand.

There have been countless Jekyll and Hyde film projects over the years, though it has been years since a studio has mounted a legitimate telling of the timeless identity-crisis tale. And no, the 2001 endeavor Jekyl and Hyde: The Musical with David Hasselhoff doesn.t count. But the good folks at Hammer Films reportedly are set to produce and finance a modern-day retelling of the Jekyl and Hyde myth with Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom at the helm, as reported by Deadline. The thriller will be called Wake, though little else about the project is known at this point. Deadline says the screenwriters for the Hyde project will be Christopher Borrelli and Matt Sand. The former penned The Vatican Tapes, which ScriptShadow says is another exorcism drama, while the latter worked on Deepwater Horizon, a film centered around the oil-rig disaster that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. As for Hafstrom, he...

Here are a couple small reports about new projects that have just attached directors. We don't have a great deal of info about either one, but as we expect to be following up on these soon we'll give you the early rundown now. First, Niels Arden Oplev, who made the original Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is now set to direct Game Theory for Summit. The film is written by Michael Alan Lerner, and is about "a college professor and game theorist who gets sucked into a large-scale global crisis." Serious stuff! Maybe. The director has been on the verge of breaking into Us films since the runaway success of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but the two films he has been attached to (The Keep and The Last Photograph) haven't really moved forward yet. He has done the pilot for the CBS show The Rememberer,...

After an absence in show business since the 1980's, Hammer Films made a big return with Let Me In, the surprisingl fantastic American adaptation of the Swedish film and novel Let the Right One In. Early next year we'll also see their release of The Woman in Black which will mark Harry Potter franchise star Daniel Radcliffe's first screen appearance following the end of the successful wizarding franchise. Now Hammer Films continues to march forward with their announcement that The Rite and 1408 director Mikael Håfström will direct a new thriller called Wake from Christopher Borrelli, writer of The Vatican Tapes. Hammer Films sets up the film like this: 3% of all men are considered sociopaths, lacking concern for the well being of others or for the consequences of their actions. 1% of all men are born without the emotional capability to experience fear. A very small ...

Lovely Swedish actress Malin Akerman has joined the cast of the CIA thriller The Numbers Station, which already has Ethan Hawke attached to star.
The film will be directed by Danish filmmaker Kasper Barfoed who you probably remember from title The Candidate and is also attached to Hammer’s Wake project.
Barfoed is directing from an F. Scott Frazier script, and the story centers on “a disgraced black ops agent tasked with a dead-end job of protecting a young woman in the middle of the Nevada desert.
When the two come under attack, they have to fight to stay alive.” No hard to guess that Hawke will play “disgraced black ops agent” while Akerman will play a young woman.
Hawke is currently shooting Pawel Pawlikowski’s The Woman in the Fifth, opposite Kristin Scott Thomas, while Akerman’s recent screen credits include Couples Retreat and The Heartbreak Kid.
And, for all her fans out there,...
