THIS MAN DAWSON – Hired To Kill a Cop - 1960

This is episode 21 of the 1959-60 Police series, THIS MAN DAWSON. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. Keith Andes headlines the series about an Ex-Military Officer hired to run a big city Police Department. The city is never named. Each episode starts and finishes with William Conrad doing the narration of the night's story.

Police Chief Keith Andes is having problems dealing with a particularly efficient bookmaking operation. Andes, decides to send a Detective, Ric Marlow, in undercover to see what he can discover. Marlow is fitted with the latest wire recorder to help with gathering evidence.

The mob however, has tumbled to the undercover and sends a man, Emile Meyer, to deal quietly with the matter. Meyer however is anything but quiet. He blasts Marlow and leaves his body in the middle of the street. This quickly has the Police buzzing for some revenge and they are soon on Meyer's trail.

Police Chief Andes calls in his best men and they raid every suspected bookmaking location. Mob boss, Stanley Adams is furious with Meyer over all the attention the hit has drawn. His take from his bookmaking is down 50% because of the Police interference. He has his number one gunsel, Gregg Martell, take Meyer out for a ride and a bullet in the head. Martell dumps Meyer's corpse in plain sight for the Police to find. Adams hopes this will cause the Police to back off.

Andes however does no such thing and keeps up the pressure. The Police finally resort to planting a bug on the car used for mob cash collections. The Police tail the auto to the mob bank. There, they go in heavy and bust in doors and capture the mob cash counters etc. They soon dig up the name of the boss, Adams, and also pay him a visit. Adams is quickly snatched up and taken to jail.

The episode features plenty of excellent location film-work. The more of this series I see, the better I like it.

The direction here is by Franklin Adreon. Adreon started out on some of the last serials made at Republic Studios. These have titles like, PANTHER GIRL OF THE KONGO and Canadian MOUNTIES VS ATOMIC INVADERS, etc. He did make three rather decent low rent noir for Republic before moving on to television. These three are, NO MAN'S WOMAN, TERROR AT MIDNIGHT and THE MAN IS ARMED.
