THIS MAN DAWSON – Three X – 1960
This is episode 14 of the 1959-60 Police series, THIS MAN DAWSON. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. Keith Andes headlines the series about an Ex-Military Officer hired to run a big city Police Department. The city is never named. Each episode starts and finishes with William Conrad doing the narration of the night's story.
There is a serial killer terrorizing the city. He has killed 5 men and promises to kill more. After each murder, the killer sends a letter to the same local newspaper editor. The editor, Robert Karnes, knows a good story when he sees it and refuses to pass on the letters to the Police. The sales of his newspaper goes sky high.
Police Chief Keith Andes is less than amused with the lack of help from Karnes in trying to catch the killer. Karnes is a known hard case with few if any people liking his approach to business.
Andes calls in a noted psychiatrist to try and get a lead on who they are looking for. The man goes over the histories of the men who were murdered and a common thread appears. Each one was a driven man who put work ahead of family etc. This sounds just like Karnes to Andes and his detectives. Andes figures that the news editor might be next on the hit list.
And right he is as Karnes' brother James Kirkwood Jr turns out to be the killer. Kirkwood, a junior reporter on Karnes' newspaper has had enough of his brother's treatment. Kirkwood is tired of being called a nothing, and a never well be good enough reporter. Kirkwood is grabbed when he makes his murder attempt on his brother at a Police press briefing.
Kirkwood is sent off for nice visit to the padded wall clinic.
