- Patrick pulls up to a crime scene to join the CBI crew. Harvey Dublin's chauffeur is dead and it looks like Dublin, the statehouse lobbyist, was abducted.
The new director of CBI is on the scene, talking to TV crews.
Patrick wants to give the case a "miss." Then Director Bertram comes over to glad hand and tell Lisbon that they can have all the support they need. Patrick says thanks, but he's sitting the case out. He asks why Bertram is there, aside from the cameras.
Bertram claims public perception is an important tool. Patrick goes to leave, but Bertram's toady stops him. Patrick objects to being touched, and warns the toady not to do it again. He leans in and says he put a dead mouse in the man's pocket and he'll never be able to rid himself of the smell.
After the toady freaks out, Patrick confesses it was a napkin.
He apologizes to Lisbon and leaves. She tells Bertram that Jane had a rough summer.
Back at CBI, Lisbon briefs Hightower. She asks how Jane is and if he's in danger of cracking up. Lisbon says he'll be fine, but time off would help.
But Bertram still wants Jane on the Dublin case. Hightower tells her to change Jane's mind. Lisbon has an idea of how, but it's kind of unethical.
Lisbon finds Jane upstairs, in the warehouse attic of the building.
She tells Jane he can't blame himself if Red John took Kristina.
She tells him it'll be good for him to have a break from the Dublin case, but she wants him to meet someone who has nothing to do with it.
He thinks she's up to something.
At the Dublin house, his wife is hysterical. Cho's had about enough.
Lisbon takes Jane to the house of the chauffeur's family, his daughter Nadine, ex-wife Patricia and her husband Keith.
Inside, Nadine tells Jane that Lisbon said he was the best and if anybody could solve her dad's murder, he can. He tells Lisbon he didn't think she'd stoop to such "crude manipulation."
When Nadine asks what that means, he says it's an inside joke. When they're appalled, he has to explain about his family being killed and Red John saving his life but abducting Kristina.
Patricia says her ex had a temper.
Outside, Jane says he's impressed with the way Lisbon played him. "Of course, now, I shall have my revenge," he says.
Rigsby and Van Pelt talk to people in the area of the murder, who say it was frequented by prostitutes.
At Harvey Dublin's office, his personal lawyer Reid Coleman greets them smarmily. Jane notices the secretary Margery looking petrified. He wants to talk to her first . She says Dublin is the most "decent, caring, clean, generous" human being. They tell her they just want to find him. She says he used to disappear for an hour or so regularly. She assumed mistress.
Jane tells her that it's very likely that Dublin is already dead and it's a blessing for her because unrequited love is a terrible thing.
Outside, Jane says he's sure Dublin is dead. Lisbon gets news about a $1 million ransom demand. Jane still thinks he's dead. "Is this a serious theory or is this your revenge? Lisbon asks.
Dublin residence
Cho reads the ransom text. Jane sees three obvious misspellings and an obvious military lilt, which means the writer isn't a veteran, but wants them to think he or she is.
Gisele Dublin comes downstairs in a new plunging neckline dress and fresh make up. She says she can't raise the $1 million. Jane starts doing his Jane thing, asking if she loves her husband and why she doesn't just sell her expensive jewelry to get him. He says she's a very good actress playing the part of a grieving wife, but she doesn't really want her husband back.
"Duh," she says. She says everyone knows he's a mean, lying, backstabbing SOB. She calls him an extortionist. She says she'll raise the money, she owes him that much.
Jane and Lisbon meet with his lawyer, who says there are seven lawsuits pending against him. He mentions the new director Gale Bertram is a codefendant in some land suit.
Jane asks Coleman if he served in the military. He says no.
Van Pelt and Rigsby stop a hooker near the scene. She says a friend of hers says she was there, a tall girl named Sugar with pink hair.
In the car, Jane thinks the Bertram lawsuit connection is interesting.
At the ransom drop the next day, Gisele leaves the money in a trash can as instructed as the CBI team looks on. Jane predicts no one will show up because Dublin is already dead.
Jane asks if Lisbon looked at the money Gisele left. She says no.
Suddenly Jane runs over to the trashcan and pulls out the money. He holds it aloft to show it is actually real. And he's immediately stopped by the nearby undercover officers.
Later, Hightower, Lisbon and Jane go see Bertram. Jane tells him to tell the media Harvey is dead. Jane says one motive could be robbery, and says Harvey always carried a diamond on him because he was afraid of falling back into poverty. The other possibility involves Bricksam Lake, the the lawsuit Bertram is named it.
Bertram isn't impressed he's the other suspect.
Outside, Jane says he can't help it, he gets an immediate urge to wind Bertram up.
Jane stops and whispers something to a reporter.
At a press conference, Bertram wraps up when the reporter Jane whispered to asks if they think it has anything to do with Bricksam Lake. Bertram fumbles, looking for a way to cover and ends up retelling Jane's diamond story.
In the office, Lisbon warns Jane how angry Bertram is going to be. But it's a trap. Jane won't say for who. Lisbon gets fed up and tells him he's off the case.
Van Pelt and Rigsby find the tall hooker, who tries to run in her spike heels. Rigsby grabs her and ends up falling into a pile of garbage. Then she maces him.
Back at the office, VP helps him with the mace.
Sugar the hooker talks to Cho. She says a limo pulled up and a pick up pulled up behind it. A white guy with a black hat got out. The driver says "what are you doing here?" and the man shot him.
Then he made Dublin walk and get in the back of the truck, then the guy in the black hat shot him.
Jane goes to the chauffer's ex-wife's house late at night. Keith answers. Jane says he needs to talk to Nadine.
He asks her if her dad ever mentioned Bricksam Lake. He says the rumor about the diamond, which he says was in his false tooth, is just a rumor. He acts disappointed when she's never heard of the lake or Gale Bertram.
He says sometimes the bad guys just get away.
Jane sits in his car outside the house. Lisbon calls and he tells her to come meet him. She knocks on his window seconds later. The gang's all there, having put it together on their own. They're following up the hooker's story about the guy who knew Pete the chauffer.
In the morning, they watch as Keith gets in his truck. They follow him in a van.
We come upon Keith digging in the desert, uncovering Harvey's head and holding a pair of pliers. He yanks out a tooth, then Lisbon shouts at him to stop.
In custody, Keith says six months ago Nadine was smoking and drinking and they had a conversation about the rules. He slapped her. She told Pete.
Pete came over to his house and beat him up badly in front of his wife and step-daughter and spat on him. His wife wanted them to make up for her daughter sake.
He knew if he killed Pete, his wife would know it was him -- unless he made it look like a tragic accident.
Pete and Lisbon have tea with Nadine and her mom. He says he knew when he saw the little round glasses and muscles that didn't go together and represented a conflicted personality.
Outside, Lisbon tells Jane he's isolating himself. He says anyone that gets close to him, bad things happen. She says his surrender is letting Red John win. He goes for a hug, but she can tell he's lying.
