- James is finally succeeding with the farmers' uptake of the Ministry of Ag's TB testing scheme. Tristan is outgrowing running the small animal surgery and buys a car to help with errands at the practice, enabling him also taking a date out
- James is flat-out with the bovine TBC tests, leaving the Farnons to do most other work. He is grimly scolded and even summoned by the dreaded ministry official in charge, who scolds repeated administrative errors, one of which nearly leads to the wrong prize cow being slaughtered. A car change and paperwork help from Helen sort it out, even with the visiting public servant's compliments. Tristan finds Florence Pandhi not only appreciates his rescue of her dog, and the secondhand car he bought against Siegfried's judgment, but also enjoys his romantic side. While Mrs. Hall scares away from getting properly romantic when her admirer expects a kiss at a recital date.—KGF Vissers
- Helen can see that James is feeling burdened. The one issue about which he is up front to her is the TB testing, his meeting with the local Ministry administrator Charles Harcourt being a tongue lashing at James' expense. James can probably admit to himself that while Hartcourt's complaints touched on a few issues, James himself is most confused by the paperwork, there a multitude of forms that need to be completed, signed and filed with the Ministry to cover this scenario or that scenario. Helen, who is feeling a bit lost at Skeldale, may have found something with which she can be of help especially to James. They still have to be careful as Harcourt has implied that James has only one more strike before he's out, that strike which may come in the form of testing at the Rudd farm in a Murphy's law situation. The other issue which James does not divulge may be of greater concern if Helen does discover what it is. In a sense of independence, Tristan has bought his first car with his own money. Siegfried has endless complaints about the proverbial lemon, which may hide more global issues between the Farnon brothers. Tristan and Mrs. Hall are both on the cusp of romantic adventures, although one is not aware of the implication and is ill-prepared for it upon its discovery. And Siegfried is having his own love affair of sorts in being in temporary care of Tricki Woo.—Huggo
