For a little while it seemed The People’s Joker might be lost to time, a new generation’s Day the Clown Cried or, if you like, Promises Written in Water. Despite an initial screening in TIFF’s Midnight Madness program, director Vera Drew pulled her film from subsequent showings over rights issues. Yet it came to light this December that The People’s Joker would open spring 2024 via Altered Innocence, and ahead of its April 5 debut at the IFC Center (with nationwide bookings to follow), there’s a trailer for the feature a PR email informs us “is in no way created by, endorsed by, or affiliated with DC Comics or any of its related companies.”
What’s seen hews closer to Repo Chick than The Dark Knight, recalling also Tim and Eric––a fitting comparison given Drew’s involvement with many of their projects, to say nothing of Tim Heidecker...

The second installment of Infinite Fest, a monthly column by festival programmer and film critic Eric Allen Hatch, author of the recent “Why I Am Hopeful” article for Filmmaker Magazine, tackling the state of cinema as expressed by North American film festivalsPorfirioAs I prepare for my annual pilgrimage to Toronto, I’m thinking about all the great films I’ve seen at Tiff that have vanished. No, I’m not talking about Vincent Gallo’s Promises Written in Water, although we can go there for a minute. Thanks to Tiff 2010, I can count myself among the small number of folks who’ve actually seen it, and will happily verify that it not only exists but also happens to be a stark, deranged, and diabolically solipsistic masterpiece… as, in a way, was the derisive email Gallo wrote in response to my festival invite for the film in the spring of 2011, before...

With a trailer for his unreleased 2007 sex comedy “Oliviero Rising" hitting the web a few weeks back, the rare presence of Vincent Gallo on the film scene recently grew just a bit more noticeable. The actor/director's own output, like directorial effort “Promises Written In Water,” remains an unknown in terms of a proper release, but in terms of appearing before a camera, a globe-trotting Japanese film will feature Gallo later this year. In a characteristically unexpected move, Gallo has been announced as the final cast member for director Junji Sakamoto's suspense drama “Human Trust,” which finished filming in Japan, Russia, Thailand, and the U.S. this past spring. Centered on the legendary “M Fund,” a supposed stash of treasure from WWII, the film follows a conman Yuichi (Kôichi Satô of “Sukiyaki Western Django”) as he's hired to travel across the globe and steal the money by two mysterious men.

With every cinematic oddity that artist/filmmaker Vincent Gallo makes, he seems to pursue a fleeting moment that crumbles after its creation. He's denied films a proper release before, as “Promises Written in Water” turned out to be hidden from the “dark energies from the public” -- but now a new glimpse of a forgotten acting project has emerged, and it's certainly a change from the iconoclast. Aside from a brief 3-minute clip (in Italian) with actor Clive Riche, little has been seen or heard about the Gallo-starring “Oliviero Rising." It landed briefly on the international festival circuit in 2007, playing small scale places like Monte Carlo Comedy Film Festival and Flaiano Film Festival a year later, before disappearing completely. However, a trailer has landed online that takes a look at its considerable cast, surreal, austere tone, and bawdy plotline. Directed by Riki Roseo, the film stars Gallo as an Italian-American immigrant who returns.

Mystery still surrounds the death of actor Sage Stallone, son of Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone, two days after being found dead at his Los Angeles apartment at the age of 36.
The actor will be remembered mostly by his portrayal of Robert Balboa – son of Rocky in the fifth iteration of the boxing series in 1990. He again starred alongside his father in 1996 disaster film “Daylight” as Vincent, a young con-artist.
Milo Ventimiglia would later portray the elder Robert Balboa in 2006 movie Rocky 6.
His last appearance was in short film “The Agent” in 2010, and before that, in the same year, drama “Promises Written in Water“, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was shown at the Toronto Film Festival, though was not released in cinemas.

Sage Stallone, son of actor Sylvester Stallone, has been found dead, The New York Post and TMZ report.
The junior Stallone was reportedly found at home in Los Angeles. TMZ reports that his father is extremely distraught. The Post spoke with Sage Moonblood Stallone's attorney, who said the death came as a complete shock.
"He was in good spirits, and working on all kinds of projects,” George Braunstein told the paper. “He was planning on getting married. I am just devastated. He was an extremely wonderful, loving guy. This is a tragedy.”
TMZ's sources say the cause of death was a prescription drug overdose.
The Post reports that his mother, Sasha Czack, had also been notified of her son's passing. Stallone made his acting debut alongside his father in "Rocky V." He went on to act in a number of films, most recently in "Promises Written in Water" in...

Buffalo 66 director claims a privately run programme to keep La's downtown arts district clean provides 'no benefit'
If you've ever paid to see a Vincent Gallo movie and wanted to ask for your money back, the maverick actor and film-maker knows exactly how you feel. Gossip website TMZ reports that he is to sue the city of Los Angeles for wasting his tax dollars on a privately run programme to keep the metropolis' downtown arts district clean, tidy and secure.
Gallo, best known for his films Buffalo 66 and the infamous The Brown Bunny, says the La Arts District Business Improvement District (Bid) simply does not do its job and provides "no benefit". In his suit, he claims the private company which runs it is only maintaining the programme as a facade to keep receiving public funds. These totalled $1.3m ($860,000 in the last year alone), which Gallo, who lives in the district,...

Even if the world ends in 2012, we'll still have one more movie starring our favorite enfant terrible Vincent Gallo. What can be said about the writer/actor/director/producer/musician that hasn't be said already, but even if we're bummed we're never gonna see "Promises Written In Water," at least there is something else that promises the out-there awesomeness Gallo usually provides. In case you forgot, last spring Gallo signed on for two roles in the Italian and English language "The Legend of Kaspar Hauser." Not a remake of the Werner Herzog film, instead the David Manuli-directed film is described as a "post-modern western" take on the strange but true story about the titular man who showed up randomly in Nuremberg in the early 1800s with stories about being raised in a dungeon, and while educated, had never stepped outside his cell into the world. It's a fascinating story with...

Promises Written in Water – and all future Gallo films – will never be shown again. What's this narcissistic, fantastic director playing at?
A while ago, I wrote here about the sad fate of the movies that graced the world's leading film festivals but never made it into British cinemas. But although it fit the criteria, one movie that went unmentioned was Promises Written in Water, a tale of tortured love from gobby polymath Vincent Gallo which premiered last year in Venice. I simply thought, given the relative fame of its director (and star/writer/producer/editor/composer), it would eventually find some fearless outfit eager to release it.
Well, it turns out it won't, here or anywhere else. And that appears to be the choice of its own prodigiously touchy creator. Specifically, a recent report at The Playlist found Gallo announcing that after a grand total of two festival outings, Promises...

Also Says He's Finished Another New Film Which He Won't Release Either Vincent Gallo has always been a filmmaker and artist who answered to one person only--himself--but now it seems the iconoclast is taking it to the next level: he's the only one who's going to be able to watch his movies. But let's go back in a time for a moment, shall we? As you might recall, last year Gallo somewhat contentiously took over the directing duties on a film entitled "The Funeral Director"--a project he was initially just going to star in--which was quickly redubbed "Promises Written In…...
