A female patrol officer happens to stumble into a jewelry heist and is killed for her trouble, but she manages to put a bullet into one of the thieves. Her death mobilizes the whole department with Chief Tom Selleck taking personal command of the investigation.
The three robbers are Michael Aronov and David Lee Russek, a pair of mafia kids who fell very far from the family tree. Their partner in crime is James Biberi an Albanian gangster and one stone cold killer.
Selleck who takes the injury and death of all under his command personally is superb in this episode. One of his best acted scenes ever is the eulogy for the fallen cop.
Two others stand out. Joel Marsh Garland plays a city traffic inspector who gets involved in this thing because of gambling debts. He still can't really comprehend the enormity of what he's become involved in.
The other is Dominic Chianese who is a retired mafioso and he and Len Cariou have history. Chianese is father of one of the perpetrators and his scene with Cariou is memorable.
One of the best episodes I've seen from this series.
