Entertaining enough for what it was...
paul_haakonsen29 December 2015
Right, well this movie starts out by blatantly stating to be based on real events. Yeah, must have been very loosely based in such a case. Because I didn't buy into this as something that had happened, not by a long shot.

"Panic Button" is about a group of people participating in some type of event or competition set up by a social network. But as dark secrets start to surface and as the participants are given very real assignments the game changes for the worse.

Now, I will say that "Panic Button" is entertaining for what it was, a movie to entertain the viewer. It is, however, not a memorable movie, nor is it a movie you will watch more than once.

Director Chris Crow did manage to air some interesting enough aspects, such as no online privacy, the ever-present 'Big Brother', people's desperate desire to want 15 minutes of fame (which always end in shame, given the pathetic nature of reality broadcasting), and the backside of social medias. While those do make for some interesting aspects, the movie just never got beyond mediocrity.

Not a movie with a lasting impact, "Panic Button" disappears as quietly and without notice as it did getting here. A mere five out of ten stars rating from me.

Entertaining enough to give it a go! ;)
Guanche4822 July 2020
Original concept, but it is a little similar to SAW, also the ' Frog voice' ,... hehe, but more pleasant to watch , with less blood and torture! Not bad at all for a low budget thriller/horrisch movie. And the actors are not bad either.

"Interesting" as another reviewer put it. But kind of worn out too. You wish they'd actually care about the characters they write or portray. It feels very unnatural and very cliché (especially towards the ending) and does not really get you involved. And it started out so good. You have no idea who those guys and the tension gets almost unbearable at the beginning.

But all that doesn't matter in the end. Because the movie throws any logic out the window (no pun intended) and tries to stick with a known formula. It doesn't work out that good for the movie. While not the worst movie, you have to be a fan of the genre to take the time to watch this.

OK ,if you like these types of movies ( low budget, horror)
torost8211 November 2011
Typical thriller/horror with a modern twist. Basically low budget "Saw" with some modern plugins. If you like such movies ,maybe you will like this one.

For a low budget movie its a good effort.

The plot is in my opinion lacking, it leaves no room suspense to build up. Or to build any relationships between the characters or the viewer. Feels rushed. The story unfolds by itself, with little active choices.

The noname actors give a good performance, trying to make the most of it.

These other reviewers must be friends of the director or something giving it 10/10.

Your usual single location thriller
Leofwine_draca19 January 2016
PANIC BUTTON is another low budget 'single location' thriller about a group of people trapped in one place and forced to confront some unpalatable truths about themselves. Although much is made of the plane setting, the lack of a special effects budget means that this might as well be set anywhere: a train carriage, a cellar, you name it.

The film has much in common with your usual thriller in this mould and indeed one of the cast, Jack Gordon, would go on to be in the almost identical TRUTH OR DARE (which was much better, by the way). The usual problems unfold, namely poor scripting which takes the form of unlikeable cast members you either don't care about or actively wish bad stuff to happen to.

The low budget nature of the production precludes the presence of any name actors and the best they can come up with for a lead is a former EASTENDERS actress, Scarlett Alice Johnson. None of the actors are particularly bad, but they're not great either when saddled with such underwhelming characters. I appreciate that the emphasis is on the psychological here rather than unnecessary torture porn but the running time does drag and there's not much to get excited about when all is said and done.

High concept attempt which just about makes it to the finish line
AtlanticSwell15 November 2011
As other reviewers have said this is low budget British horror with not a big name in sight. It's Social Network meets Saw on a private jet and most of the action (maybe 85 out of 92 minutes) happens in what is a claustrophobic and slightly greenish (?) space. But I take my hat off to the film-makers for going for a high concept piece. I enjoyed the final twist and found the characters right at the end immensely creepy. It did set my mind racing...I don't think the production values were that bad. Yes, the camera is clearly Hal 9000, but then I wonder if that doesn't say more about who put it there than anything else. I was waiting for one of the characters to make a reference to the Hal 9000 likeness, and to snigger more and make a joke of 'Dave'...but then...

I think there's been a lot of over-positive reviews which is perhaps a tad suspicious from people who've only ever reviewed one film ie this one, and then a few really quite nasty ones. I think the truth lies somewhere in between. For something low budget this is fine: I think it'll gain traction when it hits the £3 DVD barrier.

I like Brit horror and this is OK. 6 or 7 out of 10.

Too far fetched
biXen20 November 2011
A friend recommended this movie to me and since we both like the thriller genre I decided to give it a go.

The movie is a bit like a mix of the B-movie Turbulence (which are so bad that they amuse me), Unbreakable and Saw, and the games Manhunt. The plot is about 4 people that win a competition where the prize is a trip to New York. When they get on the plane all hell breaks loose.

Without spoiling anything I can say that there's a game they must play, and the game is made up of what they've done on a social network. The social network is facebook but they've obviously renamed it.

The whole plot is far fetched but in a setting where it shouldn't be, the characters are unrealistic and the acting isn't that great in my opinion. I found myself not caring much about what the reason is for whatever happens because the characters weren't believable. Some of it is so stupid that I wish I could tell you without spoiling. I don't recommend it, watch a better movie.

suspenseful thriller, Saw without the blood
trashgang22 November 2011
This is a weird one to review, I mean, there's almost no blood in it and still I wouldn't advice it to kids to watch this flick. And it's easy to say that it is in the line of Saw, watch it, somebody giving orders to 4 players on a plane. It is Chris Crow his second attempt to make a full feature and for being filmed just on a plane he did a fine job. Due being less on horror I still kept watching what was really going on and I even laughed a bit with the inside joke about Big Brother.

The acting was really good and you start to know the 4 players in the beginning and you must admit that if you were in the same game you wouldn't like to reveal yourself. Everybody has his dark secrets and this is in fact were it's all about. It made me even think about the internet, it's a fact everything you do is being watched or registered on some server.

The story itself did have some twists but the end I personally didn't like. But at the end of the day, it is a suspense full thriller with some pieces of torture, I would say without offending somebody, if you can't stand the gore in Saw than watch this one.

Gore 1/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 2/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 0/5

Nice try, but a failure none the less.
The_moan_of_all_moans7 August 2013
This film had potential, the grievances from Rupert Turner are more than understandable and it points out some plausible problems with the ever growing social media. But it was a awful film. The acting made me want to punch myself in the face and eventually the direction of the film coincidentally plummeted to the earth.

When reading the description i was intrigued, and sat down hoping for a little surprise; like something along the lines of "Tower Block" which was also a British low budget film. Well i did end up being surprised...at how bad this film was. I understand it's hard to make an impact with such a low budget, but to settle for such unconvincing actors isn't mandatory. If they cast 4 better actors this could have been a fairly good film, but they didn't. They are annoying, extremely annoying. And it's not the characters that frustrated me, but the actors themselves and their inability to truly make me believe they where in such a situation.

As i said it could've been a good film, but unless you're a movie fanatic like myself then i wouldn't bother wasting my time.

Pushes the right buttons
rooee10 November 2011
Despite some of the marketing, Chris Crow's zeitgeisty paranoia thriller owes as much if not more to Hitchcock's Lifeboat as it does to modern "torture porn", such as the Saw sequels. This is a slow-burning, character-based ensemble piece, tightly written and unfussily directed, which takes our web-based fears and makes them monstrously manifest; not only our anxiety about identity theft, but also touching upon our perceived anonymity, leading as it does to a sense of invulnerability - and from behind that veil, the screenwriters suggest, we are free to act upon our cruellest base desires with virtual immunity.

Inevitably, perhaps, the tension gives way to more visceral final act, but Crow's camera never lingers or leers. The 18 certificate (in the UK) seems harsh, given the recent, similarly-budgeted excesses of Tom Six and Srðan Spasojeviæ, from which this is a mercifully far cry.

One may well be left with the feeling that this is a desperately topical film, cashing in on the current trends for horror games and social networking - and this is not an unreasonable response. But there is real quality here, not least in the four central performances, superbly depicting the rapid mental decline as the dire situation dawns: that they've been given the trip of a lifetime, and it looks like it'll be the last of their lives. This descent could have been unconvincing, but as the laughter fades and the camera becomes unfixed, the effect is quite involving.

It's a pity that this kind of ingenious lo-fi horror is so often lost in the shadow of dismal Hollywood remakes. We can help right this wrong by supporting freshness and ingenuity where we see it.

Will you be reaching for the fast forward button? (2011)
Seth_Rogue_One17 February 2016
I've watched this twice.

The first time I saw it I was not impressed, the acting was sub-par and the plot ludicrous but I'd probably say I was entertained enough not to be annoyed by it but that's how far I would stretch it.

I thought I would give it a second chance a couple years later (today) as I had it already and sometimes movies are better on the rewatch BUT this is not one of those movies, in fact it was really dull and this time I truly was annoyed.

The beginning starts with a ridiculous statement saying: "This movie is based on true stories told by users on social media network sites" which is beyond stupid because there is no way no one could even try to verify anything said by random accounts on message-boards and such.

However I think no one when this is over will think that this movie could in anyway be based on a true stories.

I believe potentially what the truth factor relies on is the back- stories of the characters, who's personal information get leaked in the movie very much like what can happen on a message-board and the actual set-up with the plane and the game is like a metaphor for the big bad internet and the trolls and such that can do you internet harm.

And that's cute and all I suppose but it still doesn't make this movie any better, with it's often tediously slow pace and characters that are really hard to care for.

Interesting
BakuryuuTyranno14 September 2011
Panic Button starts off with the winners of a social network's online competition boarding their private jet. But somethings odd - there's no flight attendants in sight, and an in-flight competition starts

The questions are more than merely personal - whoever's behind it wants the contestants to confront the terrible aspects of themselves, having apparently found great knowledge through the internet. Should they cause trouble, a randomly-selected person from their "friends" list dies.

Naturally these people aren't terribly likable but thats forgivable as their bad aspects being brought up is the main theme of the film. Its a very engaging movie.

The only bad thing about the film was towards, a couple of twists were brought up, which didn't exactly work. Definitely worth watching though!

Warning: Spoilers
First off Scarlett Alice Johnson is not the same as Scarlett Johansson.

Four young adults win a trip to NYC from a social networking web site. On board the plane they take part in a game, which quickly grows uncomfortable and has deadly consequences for mistakes. Dave is obnoxious and we learn likes kiddie porn and is a hot head. Jo is an alcoholic. Gwen is still a virgin and Max is a liar.

You have an unseen man with a voice distorter barking out orders. Jo is set up as the "Final Girl" as she is the only one we see before the airport. The film is fairly easy to predict...what task would you have a virgin do? Guide: F-word. Sex. No nudity.

good idea ruined by terrible acting
ldnfilmlover29 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
the beginning of the movie is extremely thought-provoking and plays on contemporary concerns about internet privacy, but then it all turns a bit silly and random with all the killing..

i could almost tolerate the silly random killing if it wasn't for the TERRIBLE cringe-worthy acting from everyone starting with the plane voice-over/tannoy, and the unrealistic (typical of most Brit horror) script trying to portray shock and fear. i think it would have been way more sinister if the plane voice-over was robotic instead of the judging tone similar to the narrator of 'come dine with me'.

i was very disappointed that after the tense 'round 1', instead of getting more cruel and intrusive, the writers ran out of ideas and brought out the killing.

What a disaster.

Warning: Spoilers
This film is dreadful.

It looks like it has been put together by a couple of ten year olds who cannot have spent more than half of their (combined) pocket money.

The whole thing - apart from a few minutes at the beginning - takes place on a plane (and a very small one at that) and to say it is a cheap and and nasty effort is if anything generous. None of the characters were likable, I didn't care in the slightest what happened to them and the only reason I watched it all was that I just couldn't believe it wouldn't improve. (But actually I wished I hadn't watched it as the ending was so lame I could have cried).

Honestly, the whole thing has been done many times before and much - very much believe me! - better. Why waste your time?

Awful! Awful! Awful!
xpanther20057 December 2011
I wanted to give it a 1/2 star instead of a full star, but I couldn't figure how to do it.

The premise seemed promising at the beginning, but everything started to fall off after about 15 minutes into the movie.

The acting is terrible; the characters aren't even remotely interesting. You can't sympathize or hate(for that matter) any of the characters.

The ending is absolutely meaningless! And when the credit rolls you involuntarily spit in your soda.

British cinema used to be great, but alas; it's gone Hollywood. We're all awaiting its return.

Not bad !
theunholy-113 September 2020
That kind of movie (a bunch of people stuck in a small location) is always a gamble. Every actor has to be good, the story must be interesting and well written, the director must know where he's going. You can't hide an empty script or anything else behind some great camera work, an amazing location or a celebrity among the actors.

In that case, I have to say: well done !

It's not a great movie but it's a good one, which is impressive considering its kind and the fact that it's a low budget.

Epic Fail.......
trancehunter27 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
First of all the film is clearly a failed attempt at a Big brother/Saw hybrid, removing all originality from the foundation of the movie, they might have got away with it if was all executed well but it wasn't.

Then obviously you have the bad script coupled with bad acting and poor delivery of the already poor script. The interaction between characters and the 'main bad guy' is both awkward, frustrating and irritating. The core of the film follows the same generic formula of all weak psychological 'thrillers/horrors': A group of people take it in turns to reveal their personality traits and flaws in a crisis situation. The same generic formula applies to the rules and boundaries of the circumstances and the main bad guy: A highly unlikely and at times impossible scenario combined with over-the top powers afforded to the bad guy in order emphasise the feeling of fear, control and helplessness. The result merely portrays a story that is too unbelievable to have any real impact on you as a viewer and therefore reveals a lack of effort from the writer to think of a more intricate and realistic plot. An example of this is the fact that it takes place on a private jet (requiring a huge level of funds or authority/power to utilise - which your typical deluded killer doesn't have). Oh and this jet happens to get some form of North Sea WIFI where it picks up perfect internet connection ANYWHERE. Another is the ability of the bad guy to acquire access to ANY information on ANYBODY at ANY given time in order to gain control over the characters within the crisis. If it were possible to have this level of intelligence then there would be basically no cyber crime ANYWHERE in the world as the police would have caught everybody by now. Bare in mind that it turns out that this guy is an average sociopath - how he acquired super hacker/CIA capabilities in his spare time is omitted.

After thirty minutes I was just wishing something would happen, anything to make the film have any real point to it. After forty I was wishing it would end. In the end there lacks any real point to have watching the film, there is a slight twist, but even that doesn't result in any sense of achievement. The characters were so weak that I really didn't care what they did or said or if they all died, in fact I hoped they would to stop being so irritating. The thing I hoped for the most was the irritating, cowardly and Ponce bad guy to reveal himself from the safety of his ivory tower and get brutally done over just to teach him a lesson, however if you are hoping for this slight balance of justice then you may as well use the 'OFF BUTTON' since this never happens either.

Plane Reck!
Ckn4821 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Acting poor Sound Atrocious Plot is a real stretch Before they get in the air, its a bit like watching a 1950's B or even C movie OK so there are idiots that put everything online & that don't read the T&C's even when they are warned to. Talk about a train reck in slow mo. Once the plane has left the ground, the confines of the plane do contribute to the movie. But bad acting and bad plot can not change the awful movie unfolding before our eyes.

Once they realised the threats were recordings not live, things did turn a little more believable but by then it was too late to rescue this plane reck,

Blatant saw ripoff without the blood or gore, overall average
clubberlang78617 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is a film that tries so hard to be 'SAW'. A group of people who've done bad things in the past are ordered about by a hidden psycho who wants to punish the people by performing tasks like kill another member of the group or else something nasty is going to happen to one of their friends or family.

Watching this film gave you a sort of deja vu feeling of seen it before and unoriginal. The acting in the film was surprisingly good. There was the usual joker in the group, a strong lady, a weak hysterical lady and a strong male. It was quite cliché ridden and I for one foresaw what was going to happen apart from the twist at the end. Which is really good.

I wouldn't call this film horror its more a suspense/mystery. There's no scares or blood just psychological torture. I don't know why it is called panic button either but it is not a bad film. Just distinctly average and nothing special but watchable.

I agree with many here. Intriguing premise, and good acting, but ultimately unsatisfying... Blu-ray: Bland A8 V:7
lathe-of-heaven13 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
If I had read the reviews here beforehand, I probably would not have watched this movie. Usually, I read the External Reviews first, especially sites that I go to most for Genre films, and in this case I unfortunately did not get from them that this was so similar in tone and theme to the 'SAW' films, of which I have absolutely NO interest.

Like almost everyone here has said in their summaries and reviews, the IDEA was pretty good and intriguing and I was genuinely interested to see what they would do with such a premise. But, although they pulled it off for about the first 45 minutes or so pretty well, after that point in just basically degenerated into a mental torture test. I won't give too much away even though I have checked the possible Spoilers box (something that I rarely do) but in my lowly and wretched opinion, if they had just taken the film in another direction, ANYTHING else, to give it more depth and dimension other than just some entity clearly trying to torture them mentally and forcing them into generic impossible 'SAW'-like situations of having to do something nasty or suffer the consequences, then it certainly could have been more interesting. At about this point in the film, for the next 10-15 minutes, the focus was simply showing how distressed everyone was and their constant crying, begging, and pleading, and not much else... It got REAL old, REAL fast.

For me personally, I have NO interest in just seeing people suffer for the sake of suffering. Don't like it. Don't want to see it. In THIS case, the torture was pretty much mostly mental, except the brief excerpts that they showed on the monitors of what was happening to others. So, when it became apparent to me at about this point in the movie that all they were harping on was the continuous suffering of the people on the plane, I just lost all interest because the story wasn't really going anywhere. If they just hadn't KEPT harping on that repetitive one-note thing and actually taken the story in a much more interesting direction, then despite the distasteful elements so far, I think I would have been a LOT more inclined to want to see what was going to happen. But, that just wasn't the case.

The acting was actually not too bad considering the high emotions and usually how actors in scenes like that in films like this tend to overdo it or do a really bad job of it. And the personality types of the individuals were not so caricatured and shallow as they usually are, and actually came across as somewhat REAL people, so there is that...

But ultimately, the film makers were only interested in showing the suffering of the people, as if THAT alone was the primary entertainment. But, sorry... that just ain't my thing. What I feel would have HUGELY improved the film would be if they had at about the 45 minute mark where things were getting pretty serious and the people were beginning to realize that this was no 'game', at THAT exact point if they had concentrated the story on how the people could have used their wits and tried to come up with some plan to get out of their situation, then THAT would have kept my interest and shifted the focus off of all the unpleasantness. But, no... they just kept dragging it out, minute by minute, repetitively doing the SAME thing with each person, dragging them into the bathroom, forcing them to put on the headphones, and telling them what awful things they had to do. Just dumb... To me it seemed that there had already been PLENTY of that and the audience already bloody KNEW the seriousness of the situation. So, to me, LOGICALLY at that point it would seem that the audience would be getting a little impatient and thinking, 'Okay, now how the hell are they going to get out of this...?' So, after about 15 more straight minutes of crying, pleading, begging, and suffering, I had pretty much had it with this film.

So, all I can say is, if that is your idea of a good time, watching a group of people being mentally distressed and tortured, then sure, go for it. And yeah, the point WAS being made about Social Media and all that, fine... But, a movie is a movie, and either it is a GOOD movie or a BAD movie (usually something in between...) In this case I felt that it started off very well, and then became a BAD movie...

It's a shame that it turned out to be so disappointing. With such an intriguing premise, they really should have come up with something far better...

4 people win the trip of a lifetime to New York - or is it?
davidcowper653 August 2011
Wasn't quite sure what to expect from this bearing in mind it was shot on a budget in Cardiff with no "big names". Having said that this film exceeded my expectations. The plot revolves around 4 people winning an all expenses paid trip to New York on board a private jet courtesy of a social networking site All2gether.com. Once on board and having to relinquish all their mobile phones, it's time to play the in-flight entertainment ... and this is where the fun begins. With the cockpit locked and the mysterious "Alligator" pulling the strings, things soon start to heat up & passengers begin to turn on each other. It's marketed as a horror/thriller and they've managed to keep the right level of suspense & gore, some movies just seem to rely on as much blood & splintering bones as possible in the hope it makes a movie - Panic Button doesn't do this, there were enough twists & turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. "Dave" played by Mike Jibson (Cemetery Junction, The Bank Job) has some of the best lines and "Max" played by Jack Gordon (Fish Tank) displays his rather impressive acting skills. Panic Button definitely hit my button and I would say this is a must for any horror fans.

Compelling enough?...
cat_ranchero13 August 2012
With most of the action taking place on the plane I did find this one a little claustrophobic, but then again I guess that might have been intentional. A small budget can't have helped too much either. Decent performances all round, although nobody really stood out, so honourable mentions go to; Scarlett Alice Johnson as Jo, Jack Gordon as Max, Michael Jibson as Dave, Elen Rhys as Gwen and Joshua Richards as Alligator.

Although I did find it quite compelling I felt quite detached from the characters. I guess I didn't care about them enough for the film to have any great impact. It's quite well made, given the constraints of the budget; I just felt it didn't quite have enough to make me rave about it. It does flag a little about half way through and I found the ending slightly predictable. Still, it's worth a look if you have a spare 90 minutes or so.

SteelMonster's verdict: RECOMMENDED.

Was not entertaining
SpookyJackie18 April 2014
For a low budget film, this movie is just okay.

I found the story line lacking and that it was not interesting at all. The actors/actresses executed their parts alright, but I saw nothing very captivating throughout the whole film.

Dialogue was below decent, I felt it was more like a college/high school play. I honestly gave this movie the benefit of the doubt after hearing from other people telling me that it wasn't a good movie.

The only reason why I even finished this movie - was to see the ending. In all, I felt this movie wasted my time. Story was pretty boring !

If you're into some action and are curious of the story line, I'd give it a go. Besides that, I would not recommend.
