Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first, and we’ve previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus season 2), Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson, who has a large following on his parent-run Tik Tok account. Now Deadline reports that Jeffery Self of Search Party and The...

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

A so-so attempt to recall kids’ films of the 80s struggles to find its own personality amidst its many influences
One of the hardest big screen losses during the quick shuttering and slow reopening of cinemas during the pandemic was the lack of a major audience for body swap comedy horror Freaky, a snappy crowd-pleaser that never really had the chance to truly please a substantial crowd. Writer-director Christopher Landon’s niftily effective and surprisingly sensitive mash-up of Friday the 13th and Freaky Friday was bundled into multiplexes when audiences were still staying away, and as such, remains cruelly under-seen.
Like Landon’s previous work – writing scripts for Disturbia and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and directing Happy Death Days 1 and 2 – it showcased a buoyancy of tone that ensured fun was being had even when frightening things were happening. News of a fresh horror comedy from Christopher Landon, director of the joyously silly “Happy Death Day” and its sequel, should be greeted with cautious optimism at the very least. He’s been working in the space for some time now, having also co-written and directed “Freaky,” “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” and the more straightforward “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” and understands how to thread that particular needle better than most. His latest feels like both a natural next step and also something of a departure: a family-friendly haunted-house story releasing on Netflix. Unlike his previous efforts, however, “We Have a Ghost” fails to capture what makes this particular genre hybrid so much fun.
You know the setup by now: A family moves into a run-down, surprisingly affordable old house whose history the real-estate agent is loath to reveal. Though skeptical, mom and dad (Erica Ash and Anthony Mackie...

In the mood for a good haunting but don’t want to be scared?
Then, you might want to check out the new trailer for We Have a Ghost. The comedy is a Netflix original starring the streaming service’s Stranger Things star, David Harbour, and Anthony Mackie. The movie looks to have a fun twist on the typical tropes of a family moving into a new home in a new town that knows of rumors of an apparition in said home. Harbour’s spectre is the friendliest ghost outside of Casper and hijinks ensue when he and Mackie’s family start co-existing as local celebrities.
The official Netflix synopsis reads,
“Ernest the ghost, discovered by the homeowner who named him that because the apparation looks like Ernest Borgnine. The homeowner Frank, begins filming his ghost and posting it for the world to see on social media. Ernest becomes a viral sensation.

Kevin Lewis will follow up “Willy’s Wonderland” by directing “The Accursed,” a new horror movie about demonic possession that its creators predict will be like if “Sam Raimi and Dario Argento had a love child and James Wan was its uncle.”
Mena Suvari (“American Beauty”), Sarah Grey (Netflix’s “The Order” and DC’s “Legends of Tomorrow”), and Alexis Knapp (“Pitch Perfect” franchise) head up the cast, which also includes Meg Foster (“The Lords of Salem”) and Sarah Dumont (“Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse”). “Willy’s Wonderland,” an action-comedy horror film, became a pandemic era favorite when it was released on VOD and in limited theatrical release last February.
Rob Kennedy (“Midnight Man”) penned the screenplay for “The Accursed.” According to the official description, it centers on a young woman who faces a horrifying past. When her estranged mother dies by suicide, Elly (Grey) is forced to return home from volunteering as a nurse abroad.

While the No. 1 exhibitor AMC has traditionally been flexible about theatrical windows despite their pubic uproar against Universal last year, the chain’s CEO Adam Aron speculated today what the landscape would look like when we come out of this pandemic.
“What we learned from the Universal agreement, is that every studio seems to have different desires and needs. I’m expecting there will be custom agreements that will be developed studio by studio, and differ circuit by circuit,” said Aron speaking to how the majors are varying their distribution patterns for movies.
Aron’s comments come in the wake of Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s remarks on March 1 at a Morgan Stanley conference where he exclaimed “I’m not sure there’s going back” in regards to the way movies were released. Chapek did cover his bases by also saying, “But we certainly don’t want to do anything...

Actor Tye Sheridan is wearing a different hat with his new media-tech startup — which he claims will let indie filmmakers deliver blockbuster-level VFX on a fraction of the budget.
Sheridan (above right) co-founded Wonder Dynamics with visual-effects artist Nikola Todorovic (above left). Over the last four years, the duo have been quietly experimenting with using artificial intelligence and machine learning to create interactive video applications. Now Wonder Dynamics is gearing up to introduce a new AI production tool that they promise will let independent artists produce dazzling VFX and CGI animations for far less than is required today.
“It breaks down the barriers to achieving your wildest vision,” Sheridan told Variety. “A lot of times people dream up this story but it’s not possible to make because it would cost $200 million. AI can democratize VFX.”

The horror genre loves its tropes — sets of rules that dictate survival based on stereotypes around morality, class, race, gender and sexual orientation.
Much of the game in modern horror comes in examining and subverting those tropes, perhaps none so recent and notable as “Freaky,” Christopher Landon’s body-swap film from Universal Pictures that hits PVOD on Friday.
Dressed up as a gory comedy, “Freaky” offers liberating and honest portraits of young women and queer people, free from tokenism and broad generalizations to which the genre can often resort.
In “Freaky,” a struggling teen girl Millie (Kathryn Newton) and a menacing serial killer (Vince Vaughn) switch bodies thanks to a supernatural artifact. Now trapped in the killer’s flesh, Millie races against a clock to reverse the effects before she’s stuck forever, aided by best friends Nyla (Celeste O’Connor) and Josh (Misha Osherovich).
Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Freaky.”

The horror/comedy Freaky is a stylistically pleasing hybrid of genres that allows a group of tremendously gifted actors the ability to shine their respective roles. However, it gets a little too lost early on trying to adhere to the horror genre than embrace what it ultimately proves to be far better at, the comedic aspect of the combination.
Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) is introduced trying, like most teenagers, to simply survive high school by enduring the cruelty inflicted upon her by the more popular kids. Then, after the school’s big game, she somehow becomes the target of the town’s infamous serial killer, the Butcher (Vince Vaughn). But, being hunted by a psychopath is the least of her worries. Somehow, a mystical dagger in the Butcher’s possession causes Millie and he to mysteriously switch bodies. Now, the teenage girl is trapped in the body of a middle-aged maniac,...

As someone who has been a longtime fan of Christopher Landon’s directorial output over the years, his latest film—Freaky—is yet another home run for the filmmaker behind other genre entries like the Happy Death Day series, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Co-starring Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn, Freaky follows an unassuming high schooler named Millie (Newton), who ends up the latest target of the infamous Blissfield Butcher (Vaughn), but instead of becoming his victim, Millie ends up switching bodies with him after he attacks her with a ritual dagger, and the race is on to get her personage back before they’re both stuck living out the rest of their lives inside each other’s bodies.

Producers Lily Blavin and Niki Koss have launched a new production company, Lightning Strikes Productions, and are developing Dave Pelzer’s best-selling memoir “A Child Called ‘It’: One Child’s Courage to Survive.”
“A Child Called ‘It'” was published in 1995 and detailed the abuse Pelzer suffered as a child from his alcoholic mother. The book was on The New York Times’ bestseller list for several years. The project will focus on a child’s unyielding courage for survival enabling him to overcome extreme life-threatening odds.
Blavin is producing along with Paul Blavin, David Goldblum and Karen Kehela Sherwood. Goldblum and Tamlin Hall are writing the script.

Christopher Landon knows his way around horror. After jumping on the “Paranormal Activity” bandwagon — the filmmaker wrote its second, third, fourth, and fifth installments, which include the best and worst of the found-footage franchise — Landon turned his affection for the genre toward its dark comedy. He directed “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” in 2015 and created his own clever franchise with the one-two punch of “Happy Death Day” and “Happy Death Day 2U.”
His latest original vision, “Freaky,” isn’t quite up to the charms of “Happy Death,” but it’s still A blood-spattered twist on the “Freaky Friday” mythos that dares ask, “Hey, what if you were a nice high school kid who ended up switching bodies with a psychotic serial killer who looks like Vince Vaughn?,” the film is bolstered by go-for-broke performances from Vaughn and Kathryn Newton, as well as Landon’s sharp humor (and sharper kills...

Nabbing attention with the promising horror flick Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), writer/director Christopher Landon took a sharp turn toward the combination of ironic humor of horror with Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015) and then hit it big with Happy Death Day (2017), followed by its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U (2019). His new film, Freaky, keeps the setting among young people, while introducing a somewhat older man into the equation. Instead of a time-loop premise, this time Landon plays around with the body-swap formula. Per the official synopsis: "Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler is just trying to survive the bloodthirsty halls of Blissfield High and the cruelty of the popular crowd. But when she becomes the...

Exclusive: Those in town assuming that one of the other big exhibition circuits will fall in line with AMC and seek their own 17-day theatrical window-pvod deal with Universal will soon realize that it will be a cold day in hell.

People need to be aware that the first big movie from Universal is coming only in six months so there is no pressure here,” said Greidinger. “But we clearly see this as a wrong move at the wrong time.

The next Paranormal Activity movie is officially on the cards.
Blumhouse chief and all-around horror powerhouse Jason Blum confirmed as much on The Evolution of Horror podcast (h/t Bloody Disgusting), noting that series stalwart Christopher Landon will be developing the next installment. Before creating a cult gem in Happy Death Day (not to mention its thrilling sequel), Landon penned a total of four Paranormal Activity movies, culminating in The Marked Ones, which he also directed.
While a little rough around the edges, The Marked Ones proved to be the platform on which Landon launched his filmmaking career, going on to helm Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and the aforementioned Happy Death Day movies. While a little rough around the edges, The Marked Ones proved to be the platform on which Landon launched his filmmaking career, going on to helm Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and the aforementioned Happy Death Day movies. Fast forward to 2020, and he’s seemingly on the verge of circling back to the realm of found-footage horror, with Blum telling The Evolution of Horror podcast that Chris Landon is indeed coming on board...

Every few years, a movie redefines a genre – let’s be clear, The Dead Don’t Die does not, nor will ever, do that for the “zom com”. Despite boasting what may be the best cast ever assembled for an indie film, writer/director Jim Jarmusch squanders any such opportunity and delivers a film more than deserving of a Razzie than anything else.
Set in Centerville, a town of 738, Jarmusch seems hell bent on introducing as many characters as possible in the film’s sparse 105 minutes. The result? Paper-thin characters that do little to advance or make sense of the plot – Zelda (Tilda Swinton), the strange new samurai-wielding undertaker, Zoe (Selena Gomez) and her “hipster” friends, and three children locked up in the local juvenile detention are just a few examples. Hermit Bob (Tom Waits), a townie who lives in the woods, serves as a pseudo-narrator for reasons still unknown.
