Foo Fighters kicked off their 2024 tour (get tickets here) on Wednesday, May 1st at Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas, Texas, and paid tribute to hometown hero Dimebag Darrell during the show. Fittingly, Dave Grohl dedicated “My Hero” to the late Pantera guitarist.
In fan-filmed video (watch below), Grohl starts playing “My Hero” on guitar and addresses the crowd: “This one’s for everybody. Actually, you know what, since we’re here in Dallas, I’m gonna dedicate this one to an old friend. He lived around here. His name is Dimebag Darrell. How ’bout that? We’ll sing it for Darrell.”

Olivia Williams has given acclaimed performances in “Rushmore,” “The Sixth Sense” and “An Education.” She recently appeared as Camilla Parker Bowles in the final two seasons of Netflix’s popular drama series “The Crown.” But for many people, the British actor will always be Felicity from the Season 4 finale of “Friends.” Williams once called guest starring on the NBC sitcom “harrowing,” and she recently opened up to The Independent about the reasons why it wasn’t the best experience in a recent interview.
“Gosh. Well, just as an example, I was taken to the studio in a shared car with a wonderful actress whose character, I think, was called ‘Old Woman’,” Williams said, noting this actor was “distinguished” and “very good” but “at one point, a producer – who shall remain nameless – just yelled at her: ‘You’re not funny!’ And she didn’t come back the next day. So that was alarming.

“When I blow up, I’m gonna go nuts,” Quentin Branch declares on “Stanley Kubrick,” a track from Angry Blackmen’s The Legend of Abm. The Chicago-based experimental hip-hop duo’s beats are distorted and dissonant, with traces of industrial-rock influence paired with a punk-tinged aggression. This contrast in sounds is mirrored by their vocal styles: Brian Warren offers a melodic touch, rapping in a quick sing-song manner with few pauses, while Branch leans toward more straightforward shouting.
Angry Blackmen’s dedication to this mode of uneasy listening is uncompromising throughout. The album’s production is enveloping, with sharp changes of dynamics and sustained, ominous electronics. “Fna” opens with blown-out 808s, while “Dead Men Tell No Lies” ends on the repeated title phrase, filtered so it barely even sounds like a human voice.

David Ayer has been making action movies for more than 20 years. "Training Day" might still be his most famous credit as a writer, but he also has writing credits on "The Fast and The Furious," "U-571," and "S.W.A.T." and he later wrote and directed films like "End of Watch," "Fury," "Sabotage," and "Suicide Squad" (the latter of which was infamously recut by Warner Bros. before its release). With all of that experience, one might assume he'd be the one imparting advice or doling out nuggets of mastery on the set of his latest action film, "The Beekeeper." But as I learned in a recent interview with the director, Ayer is smart enough to know when to listen -- especially when working with a genre superstar like Jason Statham.
"He schooled me," Ayer told me about his collaboration with Statham on their new movie. "I mean, let's be real: He's an action icon,...

You can add The Beekeeper to the long list of action movies named for the jobs their protagonist took up after laying down their weapons and trying to live a peaceful life: The Gardener, The Painter, The Bricklayer… etc, etc. Actually Adam Clay always was a beekeeper, that was the name of the elite unit he was a part of before he retired to actually raise bees. He does this on a farm owned by Eloise Parker somewhere in a very confused part of England that wants us to believe it’s actually Western Massachusetts.
Eloise, who is supposed to be a retired teacher and should know better, falls for one of those computer scams that says you have a virus and to call this number to have it removed.

From penning Training Day (2001) to helming the one-two punch of End of Watch (2012) and Fury (2014), David Ayer has had the film industry in the palm of his hand on a couple of different occasions.
Following the success of the latter, he then punched his own ticket to the Dceu, opting to write and direct Suicide Squad as a supervillain take on The Dirty Dozen. The film would star the likes of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Will Smith’s Deadshot and Jared Leto’s Joker, but despite one of the most celebrated trailers of all time at 2015’s San Diego Comic-Con, the subsequent poor reception to Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and the adulation for Tim Miller’s irreverent Deadpool (2016) caused Warners to panic and retool Squad on the fly.

NBC’s adding a weird twist to its Deal or No Deal game show format with Deal or No Deal Island. True Blood‘s Joe Manganiello has been tapped to host the new series which is targeting a 2024 launch.
“The role of Deal or No Deal host has always been held by someone charming, hilarious and devastatingly handsome,” stated Corie Henson, Executive Vice President, Unscripted Content, NBCUniversal Entertainment. “When we took the show out of the studio and transported the game to the Banker’s island, Joe was the obvious choice. He loves all kinds of games, lives for adventure, and isn’t afraid to stare down a snake or two to help players win a life-changing payday and, hopefully, beat the Banker at his own game.”

As the Joker once said, “Desire becomes surrender. Surrender becomes power.” As it turns out, sometimes power becomes regret, too, as Suicide Squad director David Ayer has expressed just that over one of the Joker’s tattoos. Yeah, that one…
Posting on social media, David Ayer (who had previously helmed Fury and Sabotage by the time he landed Suicide Squad) said he wishes the Joker’s forehead tattoo, which reads Damaged, said something else entirely, as the one we all know – and mostly hate – only split audiences. “I own the tattoo idea 100% It was my choice. Original idea is it would say “Blessed” and not “Damaged” Now having said that — I regret that decision. It created acrimony and division. Not every idea is a good idea. And I’ll just be in the corner here while the internet slaps me around for this post.”

An ironic Beastie Boys music video was an inspiration for Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” The video also drew inspiration from multiple Hanna-Barbera cartoons. The music video is about as popular as the clip for Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain.”
The Beastie Boys had a huge impact on music videos. For example, they inspired the music videos for Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” In addition, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo influenced “Barbie Girl.”

During a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, director Peder Pedersen explained how he and Aqua came up with the concept for the “Barbie Girl” music video. “We had watched Spike Jonze’s video for ‘Sabotage’ by the Beastie Boys,” he recalled. “I love those crime movies and exploitation movies that they were referencing. It was an inspiration, since it had the Beastie Boys playing characters.

On Sunday, Foo Fighters closed out Bonnaroo with a 19-song set that featured hits, guest appearances, a tribute to their late drummer Taylor Hawkins, and some fun covers, including a snippet of Beastie Boys’ 1994 classic, “Sabotage.”
“Fuck, let’s do it — go, Nate, go,” frontman Dave Grohl said onstage in front of the crowd in Manchester, Tennessee, cuing bassist Nate Mendel to kick off the song’s opening riff. As the intro burst into the first verse, Grohl hopped in, doing his best Ad-Rock impersonation.
The band made it a few lines before Grohl pulled the plug, saying “I can’t fucking rap and I don’t know the song, though I love it.” He then told the crowd: “Next year, we’ll come back to Bonnaroo, we’ll play at the fucking ‘Wha-What Stage’ and we’ll do a whole Beastie Boys set, how about that?” Watch a video of the performance below.

Horror is all about pushing boundaries. As a means to refract contemporary fears, anxieties, and pressures, the horror genre, almost by design, must resist censoring or constraining the terror on screen. Some of the most iconic horror sequences, such as Janet Leigh's death in "Psycho" and the chestburster in "Alien," were boundary-pushing triumphs. Richly textured and gorgeously composed shocks with purpose, they have endured as hallmarks of the genre.
Of course, horror can go too far. Savagery and gruesome violence can have the opposite effect by blunting the efficacy of any given scare. It's why several filmmakers, such as Damien Leone, director of 2002's indie sensation "Terrifier 2," opted to scrap some material, worried the brutality would hurt rather than elevate. And it's not just horror. Some of the most disturbing movie scenes imaginable exist firmly in other genres. Sometimes,...

It was weird from the start.
Sometime in 2008, trailers for J.J. Abrams' upcoming film "Star Trek" began to appearing theaters. This new film, the previews announced this quite clearly, was going to be quite different from the "Star Trek" of yore. This was going to be "Star Trek" -- to employ a dated slang term -- on steroids. Audiences witnessed a young blonde kid in a red convertible Chevy Corvette blasting down a country road, a motorcycle cop on his tail. He charges toward a cliff with no sign of stopping. He dives out just before the car barrels into the chasm below. He is covered with dirt and defiance. When the cop asks him his name, he says he's James Tiberius Kirk.
It was weird enough seeing a car in the preview -- vintage Chevys were still plentiful enough to go joyriding in by the 23nd century? -- but it became weirder when,...

Here’s a film documentary that feels like a time-travel machine. But we’re not escaping into the past — the past is coming to us.
In “My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock,” film-besotted documentarian Mark Cousins hopscotches through the Master of Suspense’s body of work based on ideas and images, not your typical film-by-film chronological approach. He’s made hyperlinked connections throughout Hitchcock’s whole filmography (clips from almost every one of his films appear) to show that these works are not of the past: They remain eternally present tense.
To do that, Cousins presents us with a magnificent trick: making it seem as if Hitchcock is narrating the documentary and guiding you through his work and through the themes you might not otherwise notice. Impressionist Alistair McGowan portrays Hitch in the voiceover and has him down completely, from the sharp intake of breath to the almost-snort that precedes him...

After being announced at Cannes as a sales title this past summer, Miramax’s “The Beekeeper,” directed by David Ayer and starring Jason Statham, has been acquired by MGM for theatrical distribution in the U.S., as well as select international territories.
MGM, Statham and Miramax recently teamed on Guy Ritchie’s hardboiled heist film “Wrath of Man.” Jason Statham and Kurt Wimmer will produce alongside Bill Block for Miramax and Chris Long for Cedar Park Studios.
Written by Wimmer, “The Beekeeper” follows “one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as Beekeepers,” according to the official synopsis. Statham is, undoubtedly, the one man.

MGM has picked up theatrical distribution rights in the U.S., as well as a handful of international territories.
Written by Kurt Wimmer (Salt), the film will follow a man’s campaign for vengeance after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as Beekeepers.

In Hollywood, everything is not what it seems. The camera is only a reflection of the reality filmmakers put in front of it, therefore, specific experiences portrayed beyond the cast and crew's reach can sometimes be quite flawed. While the addictive thrill of a "Criminal Minds" episode starring enigmatic TV character actors may come off as smart, real law enforcement professionals might have other opinions.
That's why Vanity Fair interviewed Craig Chretien, a retired Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent, and had him analyze a selection of drug trafficking scenes from popular film and TV to share his findings. Chretien's observations shined light on the mildly true to the absurdly false, so how does the portrayal of drug trafficking in film and TV stack up to the real thing?

The Oscars don’t always get it right. There have been many notable injustices since the first ceremony took place in 1929, but surely none more surprising than the absence of Alfred Hitchcock’s name from the list of winners.
The man responsible for some of the greatest films ever made, and who committed many of cinema’s most deathless images to celluloid, never won an Academy Award despite being nominated for best director on five occasions: Rebecca in 1940, Lifeboat in 1944, Spellbound in 1945, Rear Window in 1954 and Psycho in 1960.
However, these five movies represent just a small percentage of Hitchcock’s magnificent oeuvre of 52 films. To counteract this injustice, here is my selection of his 20 greatest.
20. Blackmail (1929)

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Ten and No Code were released exactly five years apart, with the former dropping August 27th, 1991 and the latter arriving August 27th, 1996. With a career that spanned over 50 years, Alfred Hitchcock is an undisputed master of cinema. With around 55 feature films on his resume, it is extremely hard to narrow them down to a list of 15 -- and that's before you even get to ranking them.
Hitchcock charted the political turmoil of the 20th century as it was unfolding; with his pre-war espionage thrillers "The 39 Steps" (1935) and "Sabotage" (1936), his examinations of the effects of World War II on the human condition in "Lifeboat" (1944) and "Notorious" (1946), and his takes on the Cold War in "Torn Curtain" (1966) and "Topaz" (1969). When Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami received the script for “Where is a Friend’s House?” in 1986, he had already made a number of features for Iran’s Center for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults, which he headed at the time. The majority of these works consisted of didactic tales preaching simple truths about life, school and the state, whereas this new story showed some potential to go beyond. Eventually, “Where is the Friend’s House?” was Kiarostami’s first movie to receive acclaim internationally and started what is now known as the “Koker”-trilogy, a series of films set in the Iranian village of Koker, around two hundred wiles away from the nation’s capital.

Arlene Golonka, best known for her portrayal of waitress Millie on the classic CBS sitcom The Andy Griffith Show and its spinoff Mayberry R.F.D., died Monday at a West Hollywood memory care facility following a battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 85.
Her death was announced by her friend, the literary agent Cary Kozlov.
Golonka, who made her Broadway debut in 1958’s short-lived The Night Circus before landing stage roles in 1962’s Come Blow Your Horn and 1963’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, already had made numerous appearances on television prior to her breakthrough role on The Andy Griffith Show in 1967, among them Car 54, Where Are You?, The Doctors, The Flying Nun and The Big Valley.

Before Nevermind, Ten, Badmotorfinger, or Dirt, there was Gish. And while it may be a stretch to say that Smashing Pumpkins’ 1991 debut LP was the first album of the alternative rock revolution (Jane’s Addiction, Pixies, Nirvana, and Mudhoney might have something to say about that), it was an enormous landmark nonetheless. At a time when most indie albums failed to reach many fans outside of an act’s small cult, Gish entered the Billboard 200, topped the Cmj chart, and connected in territories as far away as New Zealand and Australia.

In an unusual show of consensus, reduced-price titles, a new PVOD title, and several independent films dominated all streaming charts. “Godzilla vs. Kong,” still #5 in theaters in its eighth weekend, followed its initial 31-day HBO Max play with PVOD availability. It placed #1 on both revenue sites, and was #3 and the best high-price title at those who rank by transactions.
The good news is “Godzilla vs. Kong” is thriving on PVOD at $19.99. The bad news is an awful lot of people don’t seem to be aware of the value of HBO Max, where it costs $14.99 for one month and allowed customers to see the same film in March. It suggests an ongoing marketing issue and, at the start of 2022, there will be another challenge when HBO Max customers realize that Warner Bros. titles no longer play day and date with theaters.
