Exclusive: La Haine filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz is returning to the director’s chair to make English-language passion project The Big War, which will mark the first movie he has helmed in 13 years.
“This is a project I’ve been working on for twenty years,” Kassovitz explained about the live action-animation hybrid project, which he has scripted with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands scribe Caroline Thompson.
“It is inspired by cult French graphic novel La Bete Est Morte, which was written during the Second World War,” says the Frenchman, also known for starring in movies including Amélie and Munich and hit TV series Le Bureau Des Legendes. “It reimagines that war as enacted by animals. The Nazis are the wolves who go after the ‘vermin’ — the rabbits — who represent the war’s victims. The story focuses on two rabbits who go after their family who have been...

In recent years, Netflix has lost plenty of licensed content, but many will be surprised to learn that some of the removals from Netflix have been Netflix Original titles. Here’s the complete list of every removed Netflix Original since 2017.
To get to the bottom of why Netflix Original titles leave, they usually fall into one of several categories.
The majority leave because Netflix does not own them. Instead, they’re distributed internationally exclusively by Netflix for a fixed period of time. Secondly, it could be temporary or permanent licensing problems. For example, Beat Bugs left due to licensing problems for a short period of time, whereas Slasher was removed for some time because the owner of the series went bankrupt. Thirdly, some titles are time-specific. These include New Year’s Countdowns, for example. We won’t list these below. Next,...

Get ready for a fresh twist on the Batman universe this holiday season with “Merry Little Batman.” This new animated special, set to stream on Prime Video starting December 8, promises a unique blend of superhero action and Christmas cheer.
The story revolves around young Damian Wayne, voiced by Yonas Kibreab. Unlike his typical portrayal as Robin, Damian steps into the shoes of “Little Batman” to protect Gotham City on Christmas Eve. With his father, Bruce Wayne (Luke Wilson), and Alfred Pennyworth (James Cromwell) by his side, this isn’t your ordinary holiday tale.
Director and producer Mike Roth brings a new perspective to the Batman narrative. He explains that focusing on a younger Damian offers a fresh and heartwarming take on the well-known characters. This version of Damian is more innocent and wide-eyed, perfectly capturing the magic of Christmas through a child’s eyes.
The villains are just as integral to the story.

Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg! The Batmobile broke its wheel, and the Joker got away! Hey! Entertainment Weekly brings holiday cheer to Bat-fans this Friday with a gallery of images from Merry Little Batman, an animated holiday film coming to Amazon Prime Video next month!
Sliding down the chimney and onto your Amazon Prime account before Christmas, Merry Little Batman focuses on Damian Wayne (voiced by Jonas Kibreab) defending Wayne Manor from some of Gotham City’s most despicable villains on Christmas Eve – Home Alone-style!
“Because it’s a Christmas story, telling it through the eyes of a child seemed apropos,” the film’s director and producer, Mike Roth (Regular Show), tells EW. “Typically, Damian is a teenager who struggles with good and evil. While this was an interesting idea that was initially explored, we landed on a younger Damian. We decided to turn the clock back...

Even the simplest of stories, with the most mundane and unexciting premises, can still feel like epic tales if told with the right attention and understanding of the character's struggle. Take Abbas Kiarostami's classic “Where is the Friend's House” , the first installment in the Koker Trilogy which brought the director international acclaim.
Ahmed takes his friend's, Mohammad's, notebook by mistake after they finish classes in their primary school. The error can have consequences of life-changing proportions for one of the boys. If Mohammad does not come to school on the next day with his homework finished, he will be expelled from it. Ahmed thus embarks on a mission to save his classmate and protect his future. The problem? He does not now where his colleague exactly lives, and has to rely on the help of other villagers. What follows is the most frustratingly-satisfying tale about a McGuffin search.

Angela Morley becomes the first openly trans person to earn an Academy Award nomination
The first trans person to be nominated for an Oscar contended for music. The great Angela Morley achieved this in 1974 as one of the four composers for the film “The Little Prince.” Morley’s nomination was a huge step forward in LGBTQ+ history, and it’s rare even to this day, with the number of trans individuals nominated for the Oscar still being very small.

“His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft – Alw.”
The news came shortly after Lloyd-Webber revealed that Nicholas was “critically ill” with gastric cancer, also known as stomach cancer.
On Tuesday (18 April), Lloyd-Webber described the last moments he spent with his son in an essay for the New York Times.

Update, video added: First-look images were released today of the wildly revamped Broadway Theatre that will be transformed, at least in part, into the disco dance club home of Here Lies Love, the immersive David Byrne-Fatboy Slim musical about Imelda Marcos.
In six artist renderings, the Broadway Theatre, a traditional proscenium playhouse built in 1924 and remodeled in 1991, is turned, partially, into a huge dance club, with the actors’ performance space set amidst a standing, dancing crowd on the floor where the front section of seating would normally be.
See the renderings above and below. A video of the project also was posted today (watch it above).
The musical begins performances Saturday, June 17 ahead of an official opening night on Thursday, July 20.

On Oscar night, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” will almost certainly win the Academy Award for feature animation. For many of those following along at home, it will look as though the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water” is being rewarded for some kind of secondary passion, as if del Toro had scaled Everest and then set his sights on a smaller peak on which to plant his flag. But that’s not how it happened at all.
Way back in Mexico, del Toro started his filmmaking career doing animated shorts: Obsessed with Ray Harryhausen, the amateur future auteur built rudimentary armatures, painstakingly repositioning the puppets one frame at a time. Decades later, once established in Hollywood, del Toro accepted a side gig at DreamWorks Animation, serving as a story consultant on films such as “Megamind” and “Kung Fu Panda 2” as a pretext for teaching himself the trade.

Trevor Noah is readying his next book.
While much about his new project is being kept under wraps, publisher One World is billing the novel as a “gorgeously illustrated and moving modern fable for readers of all ages about forgiveness, acceptance and the secret to solidarity.” The not-yet-titled book, which is due out later this fall, is said to be evocative of allegories and fables like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Little Prince.
Noah, who’s been on a global stand-up tour since signing off at The Daily Show in early December, has already established himself as a major player in the publishing world. His previous book, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, became a No. 1 international bestseller when it was published in 2016. In fact, it spent 32 weeks on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction list and won the 2017 Thurber Prize for Humor.

I Am Groot was a surprising addition to Marvel Studios’ line-up, but a welcome one. A series of five shorts, each of which was brought to life by breath-taking CGI artistry; the stories were low-stake and focused on the Guardians of the Galaxy member during his younger years, after the events of the first film.
The release of these shorts, which have very clearly been defined as separate entities on Disney+ rather than an ongoing show, has indicated that Marvel is willing to get a little riskier when it comes to the formats in which they tell their stories. There’s surely a place for short films within the context of the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. What narrative opportunities could occur thanks to the addition of this platform, and are there any benefits to reviving these mini-movies?

It's always hard to take rejection. No matter how successful you are, no matter how many times you've been rejected, it still stings. Conversations With a Whale is a stop-motion animated short film made by Anna Samo (now known as Anne Bergmann) - it's a self-referential meta story about an artist's demons dealing with rejection, including printed out versions of her own rejection letters from film festivals. In this love letter to artists, their art, and its audience, a filmmaker's constant rejections surprisingly bear fruit. "Anna Samo, or her animated alter ego in Conversations With A Whale, has a charming appearance that evokes memories of 'The Little Prince': the crown, the cape, essential questions surrounding one's own existence and a wee plant that is taken care of with lots of love are there." This is beautifully animated and uplifting, putting a positive spin on bad news. I was expecting more voiceover,...

The Book of Genesis contains two competing creation stories: There’s the one where an all-powerful deity conjures everything in six days, and the version where a more anthropomorphic god rolls up his heavenly sleeves and makes man from clay.
Guess which one the visionary stop-motion artist Will Vinton would have preferred.
Co-inventor of the “Claymation” technique, Vinton wanted to be the second Walt Disney. Colorful eyegasm “ClayDream” celebrates all that Will Vinton Studios achieved — its most beloved characters include the California Raisins, rabbit-eared Domino’s Pizza menace “the Noid” and Eddie Murphy series “The PJs” — while musing about what might have been, had control of the company not been wrested away from him by Nike honcho Phil Knight, who rechristened it Laika and put his son Travis in charge.
That was an unhappy end for Vinton (who died in 2018), to be sure, but like the Old Testament origin story, this saga has multiple versions.

“The Little Nicholas: Happy as Can Be” by Benjamin Massoubre and Amandine Fredon is having its world premiere at a Special Screening at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20.
Several years in the making, the film brings together the world-famous French schoolboy and his creators, author René Goscinny and cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé, as it goes back and forth between their world and his imaginary world.
Translated into more than 30 languages, the Little Nicholas short stories have been adapted to fiction but never to animation until now. For the creative team, it was essential to stay true both to Goscinny’s short stories and to Sempé’s drawings.
“The main challenge was to create the Little Nicholas’ world in animation and, at the same time, remain faithful to Sempé’s style – his drawings are very small, they’re made in ink, which gives them a sort of awkward but very lively energy,...

Overall, the 35 Broadway productions grossed 30,349,653, a slight 3 dip from the previous week’s 31,199,660, a decline largely attributable to the 1,054,792 drop in box office at Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which canceled four of its usual eight performances due to Covid cases among the cast. Moulin, with Broadway favorite Derek Klena now leading the cast, took in 537,705 for four performances, filling 91 of available seats.
Also losing ground was Lincoln Center Theater’s The Skin of Our Teeth, which canceled three performances due to Covid, dropping 58,736 from the previous week to 115,745 for its five performances.
Total attendance for the 35 productions was 246,003, down about 1 from...

Update, with Girl From The North Country Broadway’s Mrs. Doubtfire will unplug the vacuum cleaner and hang up the apron earlier than expected: The musical, which has been posting middling box office numbers during the industry’s crowded spring season, will end its run at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on May 29, producers announced.
“Even though New York City is getting stronger every day and ticket sales are slowly improving,” said producer Kevin McCollum, “theatre-going tourists and, especially for our show, family audiences have not returned as soon as we anticipated. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to run the show without those sales, especially when capitalizing with Broadway economics on three separate occasions.”
Mrs. Doubtfire, which stars the Tony-nominated Rob McClure in the title role (the show’s sole nomination), originally began preview performances on March 9, 2020, just three days before Broadway’s pandemic shutdown. Performances of the musical resumed on...

With nearly all 36 productions settling into full schedules last week, the Broadway box office tally climbed a modest 7 from the previous week, totaling 31,199,660, with attendance of 249,219 showing a 3 bump.
The attendance figure represents about 76 of available seats, indicating that the recently crowded line-up could be spreading the audience pool a bit thin. Only eight productions approached sell-out status during the week ending May 8 – the week, notably, before Tony Award nominations were announced – including the usual roster of hits: The Music Man, The Lion King, Six, Plaza Suite, Moulin Rouge!, Macbeth, Hadestown and Funny Girl. Hamilton, Aladdin, Mj and The Book of Mormon did well, filling at least 90 of their seats.
A wide swath of the productions, even some of the best-reviewed shows of the spring, were playing to more than a few empty seats: In the 60-70 of capacity ranges were A Strange Loop, American Buffalo, Beetlejuice, Birthday Candles, Come From Away,...

The essence of flying as a pilot is "you, the aeroplane, and the sky."
The title comes from Antoine de Saint-Exupery, author of The Little Prince. "I fly because it release my mind from..." and so we go. While rooted in an interview with its subject, James Bushe, there's plenty of archive footage. In his words "I kind of have a cinema real of all the time I've taken off from this runway." Not just in the simulator, the countdowns of switch and throttle and film reel.

The Broadway revival of Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, will close on Sunday, May 22, several months earlier than originally planned.
The production originally was scheduled to run through Aug. 14.
Directed and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, the revival of the groundbreaking 1976 show opened to good reviews on April 20 but has struggled at the box office. Last week, the show filled only 51 of available seats at the Booth Theatre, grossing 250,175 with a 79 average ticket.
The closing announcement arrives the week before Tony Award nominations are to be announced on Monday, May 9. The revue-style production has received nominations from such critics’ groups as the New York Drama League and the New York Outer Critics Circle.
for colored girls… marked Brown’s Broadway directorial debut. She is the first Black woman to serve as both director and choreographer on Broadway in more than 65 years.

Broadway box office was down 15 last week, with even some of the biggest hit shows reporting slips for the week ending May 1. In all, the 36 shows grossed 29,072,410.
Likely reflecting a slimming down of spring break and Easter tourist business, attendance was off by 10 last week from the previous week, coming in at 241,500. That number suggests that only 75 of available seats were filled, a significantly lower figure than the 85+ numbers reported earlier this spring.
Also impacting receipts was the large number of opening nights, with press comps and other freebies eating into the figures at The Skin of Our Teeth, A Strange Loop, Potus, Mr. Saturday Night and Macbeth. The Tony Award eligibility cut-off date is May 4.
The average ticket price for the roster was down as well, to 120 from the previous week’s 128.

It’ll be a shorter-than-planned reign for The Little Prince on Broadway. Producers said today that the show based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s novella will end its limited engagement May 8 at Shubert’s Broadway Theatre — more than three months ahead of its planned August 14 closing.
Combining dance, aerial acrobatics, video and music, The Little Prince endured a monthlong Covid delay. It had been set to begin performances March 4. The show had been set to run through August 14 but had struggled to draw crowds after rough initial reviews.
From the official logline: After an aviator descends from the sky to find himself in the middle of the desert, he meets the Little Prince, a young hero on an extraordinary adventure. Join the Little Prince on his journey as he meets many fascinating characters who help him learn how to follow his heart.

Broadway box office held steady last week as the production roster reached its full, 35-show season maximum: Though some productions remained in previews, everything that’s going to open before the end of the season was up and running, with no Covid cancelations or postponements.
In all, the 35 productions grossed a total 34,204,820, with attendance at 267,796 for the week ending April 24. Both of those figures were just about dead-even with the previous week’s tallies, with one additional show on the roster – Paradise Square returned after some Covid cancelations – and a slate of opening nights causing small dips due to press and opening night comps.
With an overall average ticket price of 128, the 35 productions combined filled about 84 of available seats, just a tad short of the previous week’s percentage (87).
The following productions had opening nights last week:

Broadway’s total box office tally held steady last week, with new shows and strong ongoing performers making up for the money lost when some productions canceled performances due to Covid outbreaks.
In all, the 31 productions reporting grosses took in a combined 28,329,869 for the week ending April 10, down a small 2 from the previous week. Attendance was 225,256, a tiny 1 drop. Average ticket price for all shows was 125.77.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s elegantly humble 1943 children’s novella The Little Prince is transformed into a visually spectacular, dramatically overblown meld of dance, music, video and, best of all, breathtaking aerial acrobatics in Anne Tournié’s international staging opening on Broadway tonight at the Broadway Theatre.
Staying true to the book’s plot and spirit, with only a few storyline excisions that might disappoint Saint-Exupéry die-hards (the rest of us could do with some additional trimming), The Little Prince is less a standard Broadway musical than a Cirque du Soleil-style entertainment making a New York spring and summer stopover on a tour that’s already included Paris, Sydney and Dubai.
Whether Broadway is a natural fit for The Little Prince – as compared with, perhaps, a Las Vegas residency – will be determined by audiences, but the production certainly delivers on the visual panache. Directed and choreographed by Tournié, with libretto and...

Broadway’s spring season kicked into higher gear last week, with the arrival of seven previewing productions (with more to come over the next few weeks). Business overall remained robust, with the 31 shows grossing a total of 28,818,836. The figure marks a 7 increase over the previous week, a jump due in no small part to the stellar performances of such recent arrivals as Funny Girl, Mr. Saturday Night, Plaza Suite and, of course, The Music Man.
Total attendance for the week ending April 3 was 224,053, a 12 increase over the previous week’s 200,731 when there were seven fewer productions on the boards. Average across-the-board Broadway ticket price 128.63.
Two shows officially opened last week: Plaza Suite, starring Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, to mixed-to-positive reviews, continuing its strong business with a 1,288,716 gross and full houses. Average ticket price was a healthy 178.75.

Like so many of you, I had a lengthy hiatus from Broadway due to Covid, beginning the day after a part-time usher at “Six” was diagnosed in March 2020 with the disease and Broadway began its shut down. In fact, I had just seen “Six,” a day or so before that, and even had a brief conversation with an usher there, so I was a little nervous. However, unlike so many others, I did not return in the fall. Having a project to finish in Chicago, I did not get back to Broadway until February 9, when I went to see the current revival of one of my all-time favorites, “The Music Man.”
Front and side, at the Winter Garden Theater, I had a great time. I was particularly taken with Benjamin Payjak, playing Winthrop Paroo. When Benjamin sang his verse in the “The Wells Fargo Wagon” number, it was so wonderful that I teared up,...

The international stage musical adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince will arrive on Broadway this spring a month later than previously expected, the latest production delayed by Covid.
The Little Prince will now begin previews at the Broadway Theatre on Tuesday, March 29, with an opening night set for Monday, April 11. The production, which combines dance, aerial acrobatics, video and music, had been set to begin performances on March 4.
Producers Broadway Entertainment Group made the announcement today. A spokesperson said the date change was prompted by “the always changing challenges of bringing an international company to New York during the pandemic.”
Earlier this week, the Broadway revival of Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf, directed and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, postponed previews by a month to April 1 at the Booth Theatre after the Omicron surge necessitated a delay in rehearsals.

Exclusive: The Gotham Group has optioned Catherine Raven’s New York Times bestselling memoir Fox & I: An Uncommon Friendship for film.
The debut book from the newly-launched Spiegel & Grau, released on July 6, watches as an unexpected friendship blossoms between a solitary woman and a wild fox.
A self-described misfit in the world of people, Raven left home at 15 and headed west to work as a National Park Service ranger. Over time, she earned a Ph.D. in biology and built a house on an isolated plot of land in Montana. Then, a mangy-looking fox began appearing on her property every day at 4:15 pm.
She had never had a regular visitor before, so she placed her camping chair as near to him as she dared and began reading aloud from The Little Prince. Her scientific training had taught her not to anthropomorphize animals, yet as she grew to know Fox,...
