The last love of Franz Kafka, the celebrated Czech author of “Metamorphosis,” will be portrayed in romantic drama “The Glory of Life.” TrustNordisk has boarded international sales ahead of Cannes, while Majestic is handling the domestic rights.
Currently shooting, “The Glory of Life” is directed by Georg Maas (“Two Lives”) and is inspired by the love story between Kafka and Dora Diamant.
The period drama was penned by Michael Gutmann and Maas. Producers are Helge Sasse and Solveig Fina for Tempest Film and Tommy Pridnig for Lotus Film.
Kafka and Diamant met in 1923 on the Baltic Sea coast, a year before the author died from tuberculosis. The worldly wise Diamant, who was working in a Jewish community, took him to Berlin, and as Kafka’s health deteriorates rapidly, they traveled together to a sanatorium in Austria. The memory of their time together will shape Diamant for the rest of her life.

Swedish singer Loreen won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night with her power ballad “Tattoo”, at a colourful, eclectic music competition clouded for a second year running by the war in Ukraine.
The diva from Stockholm beat acts from 25 other countries to take the continent’s pop crown at the final of the competition in Liverpool. Finnish singer Käärijä was second in a close-fought battle of the Nordic neighbors.
Loreen, 39, previously won Eurovision in 2012 and is only the second performer to take the prize twice, after Ireland’s Johnny Logan in the 1980s. It’s Sweden’s seventh Eurovision victory, matching Ireland’s record.
“I am seriously overwhelmed,” Loreen said. “This is so beautiful.”

Sweden has won the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.
Swedish contestant Loreen came first with her song “Tattoo,” beating out 25 other countries to garner 583 points. Her win means the contest will likely be held in Sweden next year.
Traditionally the winning country hosts the following year’s contest.
Sweden was followed by Finland’s Käärijä with 526 points and Israel’s Noa Kirel with 362 points, who took second and third place respectively.
This year’s Eurovision took place in Liverpool, U.K. on behalf of last year’s winner Ukraine after it was deemed too dangerous to hold Eurovision in the country following the Russian invasion. Ukrainian entry Kalush Orchestra won last year’s contest followed by the U.K.’s Sam Ryder in close second.
Remarkably it is Loreen’s second Eurovision win: she previously won the contest in 2012 with her song “Euphoria.”

Thirty-seven countries are competing in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. This marks the 67th year of this international competition. To date, 27 countries have claimed bragging rights at least once. Ireland has come out on tops a record seven times. Sweden is close behind with six. France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the UK have five wins each.
Israel have won four times while Denmark, Italy, Norway, and Ukraine (last year’s winner) have won three times each. Austria, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland have won twice. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Monaco, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Yugoslavia have all won once.
There will be 26 countries who will feature in the May 13 final. Last year’s winner, Ukraine, qualify for the final automatically — as do the Big Five. The Big Five is comprised of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK and they get such privilege as they contribute the most...

The Eurovision Song Contest is the biggest and brightest music competition in the world. Organized by the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), the contest pits various European countries against each other, who have to qualify via one of two semi-finals.
The top 10 in each semi-final then go through to the final, where they are joined by the host country (the winner of the previous year) and the Big Five — who all qualify automatically. Then, each country performs and vies for votes.
After the performances, every member of the Ebu dials in and dishes out 1-8, 10, and 12 points to their favorite songs – with the points decided via a combination of public votes and jury decisions in each country. Whichever country amasses the most points wins.
However, we don’t actually know the full roster for the final, which takes place on May 13, just yet as the semi-finals (May 9 and 11) haven’t taken place yet.

To hear numerous distribution executives tell it, the international TV program sales market has successfully adapted to online dealmaking. Despite being unable to meet buyers in person over the past 12 months at markets including this month’s MipTV, most distributors say business has been good.
“We’re still getting the same prices for our shows, and buyers still want quality programs,” says Sarah Tong, director of sales at Hat Trick Intl., whose slate includes feature doc “Janis and Lucy,” about a chimp raised as a human, that has pre-sold to HBO Max for the U.S.
Meanwhile, Nicky Davies Williams, CEO of Dcd Rights, which reps dramas “My Life Is Murder” and “Frankie Drake Mysteries,” points in particular to the “enormous increase in demand” from both SVOD and AVOD services.
Both buyers and sellers pivoted quickly to platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams as lockdowns first hit in 2020. Now,...

As Covid-19 looks set to roil far into 2021, Studiocanal, one of Europe’s biggest film-tv powerhouses, is ramping up what it sees as its own antidote to troubled times: A sales slate arsenal of feel-good, light series answering a market need for escapist fare.
Drawing ever more from its network of Studiocanal-owned companies around Europe, in December Studiocanal confirmed sales rights to romantic drama “Two Lives,” from Spain’s Rtve and Bambu Producciones. In January, ITV premieres “Finding Alice,” a second chance in life dramedy starring “Bodyguard’s” Keeley Hawes, from the U.K.’s Red Production Company.
Next week, on Jan. 11, French pay TV giant Canal Plus premieres one of its most anticipated Creations Originales of the year, retro French mystery dramedy “UFOs,” produced by François Ivernel at Paris-based Montebello Productions.

Oscar 2014 predictions (photo: Amy Adams and Christian Bale in ‘American Hustle’) Below are our last-minute Oscar 2014 predictions. We’re the white hats, they’re the black hats. That perspective is deeply challenged in “Two Lives” (“Zwei Leben”), Germany’s entry for Oscar consideration in the foreign-language category, which tells the story of a former East German spy who has built her life in Norway on a fake identity, only to have it unravel later in life – and with grave consequences. “For us it was very important that my character was not only the bad character – that it’s not divided in good and bad. Georg Maas’ Two Lives (Zwei Leben) has been selected as Germany’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 86th Academy Awards.
The independent nine-person jury under the direction of film-maker Dagmar Hirtz selected the German-Norwegian co-production over eight other titles such as Jan Ole Gerster’s multi-award-winning debut Oh Boy, Jeanine Meerapfel’s My German Friend and the animation film Knight Rusty.
Based on the true story of the German Kathrine Evensen (played by Juliane Köhler who learnt Norwegian for the part), Two Lives addresses a chapter of recent German history which is unfamiliar to many: the fate of the Norwegian “Lebensborn Children,” a legacy of the Third Reich.
Evensen leads a happy life with her family and mother (played by Liv Ullmann) in Norway. However, with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, she is suddenly confronted with her secret Stasi past. Her false identity threatens her entire existence, but, to prevent...
