As Aida, Mallory Jansen has been hitting it out of the park in every episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Lmd story arc. Despite being an android, Aida feels more multifaceted than many of her human counterparts. She's both funny and frightening, charming yet chilling.
So, one can't be too surprised that the showrunners decided to bring their Mvp up for a second at bat, resulting in one of the already-excellent season's most powerful episodes yet.
On Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 Episode 13, Coulson and Mack tracked down the human woman who inspired Radcliffe's creation of Aida: his former colleague and ex-girlfriend, Agnes.
An Australian woman (conveniently allowing Jansen to use her real accent) with an inoperable brain tumor, Agnes is attempting to live out her last days in the glow of the Spanish sun, alone but in peace. However, Coulson is not content to let her.
I'll mark you down as shocked,...

The leading international film, television and digital co-production market in Canada is less than one month away. Strategic Partners, a presentation of the Atlantic Film Festival, unveils a line-up of cutting-edge panels and esteemed panelists not-to-be missed at this year’s event, September 11 - 14 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
“We have put together a fantastic itinerary of panel discussions for this year’s program. Some of the world’s top trendsetters will descend upon Halifax to deliver the very latest news on topics such as financing and distribution of digital first content and exploring why producers should consider producing series for the web as part of their business model,” said Strategic Partners Director, Laura Mackenzie. “We are extremely excited to welcome the Argentinean Producers and Director as well as the Canadian Producers of The Games Maker to present a Case Study on this Argentinean/ Canadian/ Italian co-production. We always aim to provide the most progressive and up-to-the-minute information available and I'm very proud to announce this year’s line-up!”
I will be moderating the panel on the film "The Game Maker" on September 12th. See the full line up below.
Strategic Partners has announced the following program and panelists for 2014:
A Case Study of "The Games Maker"
When: September 12th, 1:20 Pm
Where: Imperial Room, Lord Nelson Hotel
A complex Argentinian-Canadian-Italian co-production, "The Games Maker" is a true international success story, from script to screen. Released in early July 2014 in Latin America, this family adventure film with universal appeal has dazzled at the box office.
Moderator Sydney Levine (SydneysBuzz) will lead an in-depth discussion with the stellar team behind the feature film. The discussion will shed light on the project’s origination, the obstacles they overcame during production, how financing was achieved and how distribution and international sales were determined and executed.
Panelists include: Argentinean Director, Juan Pablo Buscarini, Pampa Films ("Chinese Take-Away"); Argentinean Producer, Verónica Cura, Utopica Group ("The Headless Woman"); Canadian Producers, Kim Roberts and Tina Pehme, Sepia Films ("In Their Skin")
Web Series Wizards Weigh In – the magic behind creating successful online content
When: September 13th, 1:45 Pm
Where: Imperial Room, Lord Nelson Hotel
Original web series appeared on the market with such landmark properties as Red vs Blue and The Guild, busting open the belief that short-form web content would be YouTubers on skateboards and kittens in cardboard. Web series have since matured into their own art form and are recognized as a legitimate format of content for mobile and internet audiences. But how are producers financing web hits like Video Game High School or Epic Mealtimeand is it a viable format for independents?
Traditional and new media companies are racing to 'videofy' their internet magazines and newspapers (think Vice, The Guardian, and Conde Nast publications) as are many brands (think Red Bull, Amex and Ge.)
Panel moderator, Catherine Tait, Producer/ Distributor at iThentic, will explore with her panel of web series wizards who the new buyers are now and whether or not this is an avenue for independent producers to explore.
Panelists will include: Matthew Graham, Senior Director, PBS Digital Studios; Chris Skinner, Head of Digital, CTV; Ben Waller, Partner, RocketJump Studios
Beyond Broadcast — original programming in an increasingly digital-first world
When: September 14th, 11:20 Am
Where: Imperial Room, Lord Nelson
Today's media landscape is arguably one of the most innovative periods in media history, and yet one that is fraught with confusion and possibly disillusion, some of the best indicators of large-scale change. Currently, most online platforms are fully committed to commissioning original programming, and many media companies are producing original content for online and mobile platforms. In response, many new and traditional broadcast players are now commissioning original ‘digital first’ series, creating an ever increasingly symbiotic relationship.
How exactly are traditional broadcasters responding and what are the opportunities for their defense? How can broadcasters capitalize off this growing trend and work together with creators to further develop their online offerings?
Panel moderator, Producer Damon D'Oliveira ("What We Have," "The Book of Negroes") will examine how the concept of 'Content Everywhere’ is now imperative for all media companies, and panelists will take an in-depth look at the burgeoning marketplace for ‘digital-first’ original content.
Panelists will include: Stephen Finney, Production Executive, Original Drama Content, Shaw Media; Fay Wells, Distribution Consultant; Sam Harowitz, Director, Television Acquisitions & Development, Global Content, FreemantleMedia International
Each year, top Canadian and international industry players, including producers, investors, sales agents, funding agencies, broadcasters and distributors are selected to attend Strategic Partners. Offering over 1,000 pre-scheduled 1-2-1 meetings, co-production focused roundtable sessions, cutting edge panels, visionary keynote speakers, and screenings and receptions – Strategic Partners is a convergence of talent and innovation, producing tangible results.

Slim Pickens was an actor known for One Eyed Jacks, Blazing Saddles and of course Dr Strangelove. What you get this week is not Pickens the actor iconically riding the bomb down to the ground in the Stanley Kubrick classic or any kind of online retrospective of his work, but slim pickings in terms of new streaming choices. So it’s Netflix’s time to shine….
Netflix has added more or less all of the low-key interesting independent films from last year with real gems like Safety Not Guaranteed and Maniac and even the lesser likes of Excision and Some Guy Who Kills People. It’s entirely possible that Lovefilm/Amazon is behind closed doors after last week’s Marvel/Netflix news, plotting something with DC comics but we will see…

A home invasion thriller with an awkward setup, In Their Skin stars Selma Blair and Josh Close as parents, Mary and Mark Hughes, facing tragedy with their young son at their secluded vacation home. Close, who I barely remember from The Exorcism of Emily Rose, is pretty solid as the distant and heartbroken father dealing with the death of his daughter by burying himself in work. Blair's always been a solid performer in stuff like Hellboy and The Sweetest Thing (don't judge me, that movie is hysterical), but here she's upped her game a bit, the perfect counter to Close in that she's a bit more emotional and high-strung.

Chicago – I may never know how “In Their Skin” came into being, but I have a pretty good theory. Screenwriter/star Josh Close was so appalled by the unapologetic bleakness of Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games” that he took it upon himself to make the exact same movie, more or less, but with a much happier ending. It’s a noble effort but every bit as pointless as Rod Lurie’s proudly non-misogynistic remake of “Straw Dogs.”
Perhaps Close was so offended by the killers’ blasé approach to offing a rich family in Haneke’s film that he wanted to illustrate how white upper class folk are every bit as prone to suffering as the rest of us. “We’re not perfect!” shouts Close at his captor, a ruthless madman hell-bent on stealing his identity. Instead of finding their home invaded by two creepy male sociopaths, the innocent trio of...

The star of Hitchcock is versatile, nuanced and passionate. Yet James D'Arcy is so self-deprecating, he says he once got a Hollywood audition only because they thought he was Colin Firth
James D'Arcy sweeps into the London restaurant, grabs my hand in a matey greeting, and slides in beside me on the banquette. He wriggles out of a black sweater, revealing an olive T-shirt and tanned forearms.
I have just seen Hitchcock, his most recent film, an enjoyably heightened account of the making of Psycho in which he gives an eerily exact rendering of Anthony Perkins, wringing his rolled-up script anxiously in the presence of Hitch (played by Anthony Hopkins). Like most of his work to date, it gives no clue as to whom D'Arcy might be offscreen; he is equal parts talent, pointed handsomeness and mystery.
Though alert and nuanced in everything from the briny melee of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World...

Each year horror fans are treated to some memorable and some horrifically bad films that either quench our appetites for shocks and scares or make us run for the exits of the theater. It’s no surprise that 2012 was any different. Although we had to suffer through such painful features as Silent Hill: Revelation, Paranormal Activity 4, and Chernobyl Diaries, at least we were given such terrifying treasures as Sinister, Silent House, and everyone’s favorite horror film of the year Cabin in the Woods. Unfortunately, there are so many independent horror films that get missed each year due to their lack of a wide release or only getting a DVD/Blu-ray release. We have all seen our fair share of direct-to-video crap, but there are always a few each year that stand apart from the rest. Just because it doesn’t have any major actors in it or...

Take heed, first-time screenwriters and directors of thriller/horror movies: If your normal, human characters are not behaving like normal human beings would, you might as well let go of any notion your movie is “about” something. Let it go. Make that B-movie or straight-to-home video slasher, slap Alan Smithee on the credit reel and move on. Or I guess you could make In Their Skin....

If there is one thing us horror fans are leery of doing it would be going out to an isolated, cut-off-from-the-world destination. Simply put, we know better. That’s not say we are agoraphobic but don’t be surprised if have some sort of escape or contingency plan for the situation of a possible home invasion. Trust us, it is for the best. After watching In Their Skin (formerly Replicas), my position on this matter has not changed.
The Hughes family consisting of Mark (Joshua Close, who also wrote the screenplay), his wife Mary (Selma Blair) and their son Brendon (Quinn Lord) retreat to their cottage in the middle of the woods for a break from their routine yet busy work lives. Chicago – The set-up for the domestic horror of “In Their Skin” immediately brings to mind excellent thrillers like Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games,” David Moreau & Xavier Palud’s “Them,” and Bryan Bertino’s underrated “The Strangers.” There’s something inherently terrifying about being assaulted in a place you consider safe – your home. When home is no longer protected, what is? Sadly, Jeremy Power Regimbal’s intense drama doesn’t offer anything significant to a horror genre filled with superior choices. Regimbal does the best with what he’s given but it’s Joshua Close’s obvious script and a mediocre ensemble that fail to deliver.

Best known as the man who stepped in to portray King Edward VIII in Madonna's historical romance "W.E." after Ewan McGregor (wisely?) dropped out of the project, British thesp James D'Arcy is in the midst of his highest profile year yet thanks to three wildly varied turns in films that couldn't be more dissmilar. In the buzzed-about biopic "Hitchcock," D'Arcy plays "Psycho" star Anthony Perkins; in Tom Tykwer and the Wachowski's siblings' independently financed epic "Cloud Atlas," he dons prosthetics, wigs and a myriad of costumes to play a number of characters of varying ages, ethnicities and genders. And in the indie horror-thriller "In Their Skin," out this Friday in select theaters, he lets loose as an unhinged homicidal maniac who keeps a family hostage in their own home with the intention to steal the man of the house's identity once all is said and done. D'Arcy called in to Indiewire.

After breaking box office records overseas, the 23rd James Bond film Skyfall finally arrives here in North America this weekend where it will attempt to do the same. Does 007 really have a shot at taking down The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises? We're about to find out. There are no other new movies in wide release this weekend (for obvious reasons), but in select theatres we also have Steven Spielberg's Lincoln (which will be expanding next week) along with the Patton Oswalt / Johnny Knoxville comedy Nature Calls and The Comedy starring Tim Heidecker. What will you be watching this weekend? Skyfall Lincoln (limited) Nature Calls (limited) The Comedy (limited) Dangerous Liaisons (limited) In Their Skin (limited) A Royal Affair (limited) Starlet (limited)

In Their Skin
Director by Jeremy Power Regimbal
Written by Joshua Close
Canada, 2012
Following a still raw and recent family tragedy, Mark (Joshua Close), Mary (Selma Blair), and their nine-year-old son Brendon (Quinn Lord) take a therapeutic sylvan sabbatical to their family cottage. One morning, they are unceremoniously introduced to the Zakowski’s, an overly ingratiating family consisting of a married couple, Bobby and Jane, and their big-for-his-age son Jared (James D’Arcy, Rachel Miner, Alex Ferris). After, when Mark is obligated to invite them over to dinner, things start to spiral into a dark and perilous situation when the true intentions of the Zakowski’s are slowly revealed.
Initially, In Their Skin is often gripping and tense. The film plays on a primal level of fear that we can all identify with, the fear of letting something dangerous into our homes. The characters are put into real and unavoidable...

Chicago – The true power of a bump-in-the-night type film is not an overt or bloody attack on a person, but the anticipation or psychological elements that precedes the main event. Director Jeremy Power Regimbal has a fine example of that type of thriller in his new film, “In Their Skin.”
The film is his directorial debut, after success as a producer and in various production capacities. It features familiar character actors Selma Blair (TV’s “Anger Management”), Joshua Close (“The Master”) and James D’Arcy (who portrays Anthony Perkins in the upcoming “Hitchcock”), and deals with a sense of unease regarding a couple (Blair and Close) who are dealing with a tragedy by getting away from it all in a woodsy vacation home, and their new neighbors who have a penchant for wearing out a welcome.

Today was Day 8, making this the penultimate night of Toronto After Dark 2012. At this point, only four films remain – two shorts and two features. However, before I start ruminating over the sadness that is post-tadff life, I’ll give you a rundown of what happened this evening at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema in beautiful Downtown Toronto, Ontario…
The evening kicked off with the Canadian short Alchemy And Other Imperfections, which the Tadff site describes as being about a woman who “makes a desperate bid to rid her husband of a memory that has soured their love and left them ostracized from the outside world.” I honestly couldn’t sum it up any better than that, which is why I felt the need to use a quote. Anyhow, the short was very interesting and well done, featuring a lot of fantastical imagery and some beautiful effects work; definitely one to watch,...

Everybody has some kind of turmoil in their lives their own dramas and heartbreaks that can consume their thoughts and become the central focus of life. No matter how bad things seem though there is always someone who would kill for that life because its so much better than his or her own meager existence. Thats the thought at least in the IFC Midnight film In Their Skin starring Selma Blair (Hellboy The Fog Columbus Circle) and writer Joshua Close (The Plague Diary of the Dead The Day the Earth Stood Still).

It seems like every year we are getting closer to a third Hellboy film, but at the end, nothing really happens. Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) are very much liked by the fans and comic book movie community, so it's not a surprise everybody wants to see the third and final film. Talking to Bloody-Disgusting about her new film In Their Skin, Selma Blair also shared some of her thoughts on Hellboy III and how she is very much hoping that it will happen. More below: "It’s my dream to work with Guillermo del Toro again. I just want to be near him. I love him. I miss him. It’s my dream that one day when I’m done with the TV Show [Anger Management] they say, ‘ok the movie’s actually going to go!’ That would be the biggest heaven. I mean it’s all set up.

The list of "home invasion" horror flicks has added some rather impressive new titles over the past several years. Obviously both versions of Michael Haneke's Funny Games proved to be fairly influential to a lot of independent filmmakers who realized you could wring a lot of tension out of one house, a handful of actors, and (hopefully) a halfway compelling premise. Movies like The Strangers, Inside, and Them did a fine job of adding a few new wrinkles to a pretty simple story, and now that the sub-genre has died down a bit, up pops a quiet new chiller from Canada called In Their Skin. Also known as Replicas (on the film festival circuit, anyway), this is a rather standard re-telling of a slight but effective premise, and this time around it's not a new "hook" that sells the film, but a simply intelligent screenplay, several strong performances, and...

Jeremy Power Regimbal’s “In Their Skin” looked and felt like a sci-fi invasion movie when it was originally called “Replicas”, but this latest trailer for the film (featuring the new swanky title) makes it look more like a horror/slasher title. The synopsis (below) also seems to eschew the sci-fi tone, if there ever was one, I mean. I’m frankly a little confused. Whatever the case, take a look at the latest trailer for “In Their Skin” and judge for yourself. It’s creepy enough, that’s for sure. Ah, fall. Every year when the calendar flips to October, the leaves begin turning, the air gets that crispness to it and pumpkins appear on your neighbor's doorstep, letting you know that autumn has well and truly arrived. And with the fall comes one other annual tradition: The point each year when you realize once again that people are all apparently really, really creepy.
