- [Rick kneels over Shane's bleeding body as Shane dies]
- Rick Grimes: [Rick screams] Damn you for making me do this, Shane. This was you, not me! You did this to us! This was you, not me... not me! Not me!
- [first lines]
- Rick Grimes: [Rick stands over Dale's grave with the rest of the group, narrating] Dale could... could get under your skin. He sure got under mine, because he wasn't afraid to say exactly what he thought, how he felt. That kind of honesty is rare and brave. Whenever I'd make a decision, I'd look at Dale. He'd be looking back at me with that look he had. We've all seen it one time or another. I couldn't always read him, but he could read us. He saw people for who they were. He knew things about us... the truth... Who we really are. In the end, he was talking about losing our humanity. He said this group was broken. The best way to honor him is to unbreak it. Set aside our differences and pull together, stop feeling sorry for ourselves and take control of our lives... our safety... our future. We're not broken. We're gonna prove him wrong. From now on... we're gonna do it his way. That is how we honor Dale.
- [Shane tells Rick to raise his gun]
- Shane Walsh: Come on, man. Raise your gun.
- Rick Grimes: No. No, I will not.
- Shane Walsh: What happened, Rick? I thought you weren't the good guy anymore. Ain't that what you said? Even right here, right now, you ain't gonna fight for 'em? I'm a better father than you, Rick. I'm better for Lori than you, man. It's 'cause I'm a better man than you, Rick. 'Cause I can be here and I'll fight for it. You come back here and you just destroy everything! You got a broken woman. Y-You got a weak boy. You ain't got the first clue on how to fix it.
- Shane Walsh: [Shane cocks his gun] Raise your gun.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick in a low voice] You're gonna have to kill an unarmed man.
- [Rick pleads with Shane to put his gun down]
- Rick Grimes: [Shane holds his gun aimed at Rick] Now listen to me, Shane. There is still a way back from this.
- Rick Grimes: [Shane pants as Rick lowers his gun] Nothing has happened here. We're gonna lay down our guns and we're gonna walk back to the farm... together.
- Rick Grimes: [Shane stares quietly as Rick steps toward him] Back to Lori. Back to Carl. Put this all behind us.
- [when Rick moves in to stab Shane]
- [Rick tells Shane that he won't be able to live with himself if he kills him]
- Rick Grimes: I thought we worked this all out.
- Shane Walsh: [Shane chuckles] We tried to kill each other man. What you think? We just gonna forget about it all? We gonna ride off into the sunset together?
- Rick Grimes: You're gonna kill me in cold blood? Fuck my wife? Have my children... my children... call you daddy? Is that what you want? That life won't be worth a damn. I know you. You won't be able to live with this.
- Shane Walsh: What you know about what I can live with? You got no idea what I can live with, what I live with! You wanna talk about what I can do, Rick? How about what you can do? Here I am.
- [Shane tells the group that Randall got the jump on him]
- Shane Walsh: Hey, look, there ain't no use in tracking him, okay? He went that way. We need to pair up. We spread out, we just chase him down. That's it.
- Daryl Dixon: Kid weighs a buck-25 soaking wet. You trying to tell us he got the jump on you?
- Shane Walsh: I say a rock pretty much evens those odds, wouldn't you?
- [Shane walks Rick out into the empty field to kill him]
- Rick Grimes: So this is where you planned to do it?
- Shane Walsh: It's a good place as any.
- Rick Grimes: At least have the balls to call this what it is... murder.
- [Rick tells Shane that nobody will believe his story]
- Rick Grimes: You really believe if you walk back onto that farm alone... no me, no Randall...
- Shane Walsh: I want you to hush up.
- Rick Grimes: You really believe they're gonna buy whatever bullshit story you cook up?
- Shane Walsh: That's just it. It ain't no story. I saw that prisoner shoot you down. I ran after him. I snapped his neck. It ain't gonna be easy, but Lori and Carl... they'll get over you. They done it before. They just gonna have to.
- [Shane cocks his gun at Rick]
- [Hershel invites Rick's group in the house so that they can all sleep together]
- Rick Grimes: It'll be tight, 14 people in one house.
- Hershel Greene: Don't worry about that. With the swamp hardening, the creek drying up...
- Maggie Greene: With 50 head of cattle on the property, we might as well be ringing a damn dinner bell.
- [Hershel tells Lori that she can sleep in his bed while he takes the couch]
- Hershel Greene: You can put that in my room. You'll be more comfortable there.
- Lori Grimes: We can't do that.
- Hershel Greene: A pregnant woman and child sleeping on the floor while I've got a bed to myself?
- Lori Grimes: This is still your house.
- Hershel Greene: It's our home. I'll take the couch downstairs. On nights when I came home reeking of bourbon, my wife would lock the bedroom door. I'm sad to say that couch and I became old friends.
- Theodore 'T-Dog' Douglas: [T-Dog walks up between them] Look, if you two can't decide, I'll take it.
- Lori Grimes: [Lori smiles as T-Dog walks away] Thank you.
- Hershel Greene: [Hershel shouts back to T-Dog] The couch is mine.
- [Rick asks Daryl if he's good after being the one who killed the wounded Dale]
- Rick Grimes: That thing you did last night...
- Daryl Dixon: Ain't no reason you should do all the heavy lifting.
- Rick Grimes: So are you good with all this?
- Daryl Dixon: I don't see you and I trading haymakers on the side of the road. Nobody'd win that fight.
- Daryl Dixon: [Daryl walks off] I'm gonna take a piss.
- [Andrea tells Glenn that Dale was proud of him]
- Glenn Rhee: I let him down.
- Andrea Harrison: He was proud of you. Maybe not in that moment, but overall.
- Glenn Rhee: Oh, that's easy for you to say. You had his back.
- Andrea Harrison: I have my share of regrets, but I think that he knew how much we cared for him.
- [Rick sits beside Carl in the barn]
- Rick Grimes: [Rick holds a gun out to Carl] Take it. What happened to Dale had nothing to do with you.
- Carl Grimes: He... he died, Dad.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick hangs his head] Yeah. Yeah. Feels like there's a lot of that going around.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick puts his arm around Carl] That's why I need you. No more kid stuff. I wish you could have the childhood I had, but that's not gonna happen.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick in a low voice] People are gonna die. I'm gonna die. Mom. There's no way you can ever be ready for it. I try to be, but I can't. The best we can do now is avoid it as long as we can, keep one step ahead. I wish I had something better to say, something... something more profound. My father was good like that. But I'm tired, son.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick holds the gun back to Carl] Please take it.
- [T-Dog goes to the shed only to find the missing Randall]
- Theodore 'T-Dog' Douglas: [T-Dog bangs the shed door] Yo, Randy. Governor called. You're off the hook.
- Theodore 'T-Dog' Douglas: [T-Dog opens the shed door to see the shed empty] Oh, hell no.
- [Shane walks Randall deeper into the woods]
- Randall Culver: Hey, you ain't gotta be so rough. We're on the same side now. You're gonna like it with us. Gets a little crazy sometimes, but it's a tough bunch of guys. You'll fit in good.
- Shane Walsh: Less talking, more walking.
- Randall Culver: Look, I run my mouth when I get nervous. I can't help it. I got a lot going on, you know?
- Shane Walsh: [Shane looks back towards the farm] It ain't all about you.
- Randall Culver: I... I ain't saying it's about me. Just trying to...
- [when Randall screams before the sound of a snap]
- [Daryl and Glenn examine Randall's dead Walker body]
- Daryl Dixon: He got his neck broke. He's got no bites.
- Glenn Rhee: Yeah, none you can see.
- Daryl Dixon: No, I'm telling you he died from this.
- Glenn Rhee: How's that possible?
- [last lines]
- Carl Grimes: [Carl finds Rick in the field with Shane's dead body] Dad?
- Rick Grimes: [Rick with tears in his eyes] Carl. You know... you should be back home with mom.
- Rick Grimes: [Carl cocks the gun at Rick] Just... just put the... put the gun down.
- Rick Grimes: [the Walker-Shane rises up from behind Rick, snarling] It's not what it seems.
- Rick Grimes: [Carl nervously aims before firing a shot] Please.
- Rick Grimes: [as Rick and Carl look at the Walker-Shane's body collapse] Wait-wait-wait-wait.
- [Rick asks for Andrea to babysit Shane]
- Rick Grimes: You've become close.
- Andrea Harrison: We talk.
- Rick Grimes: Then you know he's not a bad guy. He's just his own worst enemy.
- Andrea Harrison: You want me to babysit Shane?
- Rick Grimes: I need to make sure every time I leave the farm all hell doesn't break loose.
- Andrea Harrison: Then maybe you should stop leaving.
- [Shane tells Carl that he's responsible for the death of Dale]
- Carl Grimes: Dale. It's my fault that he died.
- Shane Walsh: Carl, why would you say that, man? He got bit by a walker. Why you say...
- Carl Grimes: I saw that walker. I was gonna shoot it. When he was stuck in the mud. I was... I was throwing rocks at him and stuff. But I was gonna do it... shoot it right in the head. And it... it got free, came after me and... I ran away. If I had killed it, Dale would still be here.
- Shane Walsh: [Shane holds out his gun to give to Carl] Carl, I want you to stop that, okay? This ain't your fault. But you need to hold onto this. You need to protect yourself. As long as I'm around you, nothing's gonna happen to you, Carl. But I can't keep my eyes on you 24/7. Only you can do that. Carl, take it.
- Carl Grimes: I'm never touching another gun again.
- [Glenn carries his bed supplies into Hershel's home]
- Maggie Greene: You can put your stuff upstairs in my room.
- Glenn Rhee: With your dad in the house?
- [as Maggie smiles]
- [Lori talks to Shane as he fixes some boards on Hershel's property]
- Lori Grimes: Wouldn't that be easier if you waited for some help?
- Shane Walsh: Ain't no use waiting for something that ain't gonna come. No, I'll just... just do it all myself.
- Lori Grimes: Yeah, you always do, just like that time you showed up Rick fixing our sink.
- Shane Walsh: Yeah. Just so you know, that's not the reason your basement flooded. You can thank Rick for that... using rubber washers with a metal pipe.
- [Lori thanks Shane for keeping her alive while apologizing for hurting him]
- Lori Grimes: I made a mess of things. I put you and Rick at odds. I don't even know whose baby this is. I can't imagine how hard that is on you. You led us out of Atlanta with no thought for yourself. Do you remember that night? The flames, the...
- Lori Grimes: [Lori tears up] And I'm sitting in our car thinking 'We're gonna be all right. He's gonna make it all right. We'll get out of here.' And I never thanked you for that. Even though things got... confused between us, you were there for me. You were there for me. Thank you.
- Shane Walsh: [Shane whispers] You don't need to thank me for that.
- Lori Grimes: [Lori's voice cracks] Of course I do. Of course I do.
- Shane Walsh: No, you...
- Lori Grimes: Whatever happened between us, whatever the hell we thought it was... and not just you, but... I'm sorry, Shane. Please believe me. I am so sorry.
- [as Lori walks away crying]
- [Shane unties Randall out in the woods]
- Randall Culver: So you're not gonna kill me?
- Shane Walsh: Come on, man. If I was, you'd be dead.
- [Glenn and Daryl search the woods for Randall]
- Glenn Rhee: We're just back to square one.
- Daryl Dixon: If you're gonna do a thing, you might as well do it right.
- [Glenn and Daryl start to follow a set of two tracks]
- Daryl Dixon: There's two sets of tracks right here. Shane must've followed him a lot longer than he said.
- Daryl Dixon: [Daryl aims his flashlight to a tree] There's fresh blood on this tree. There's more tracks. Looks like they're walking in tandem.
- Glenn Rhee: Sorry.
- Daryl Dixon: Yeah, there was a little dust up right here.
- Glenn Rhee: What do you mean?
- Daryl Dixon: I mean something went down.
- Glenn Rhee: It's getting weird.
- [when the two hear a snap in the woods]
