Great Episode

When the archaeologist Manuel Montero is found murdered in a museum, Lisbon and Patrick investigate the crime scene. They learn that Professor Montero was also a trader and was selling a valuable Mayan pendant to a buyer, and the relic is missing. They learn that the team responsible for the transportation of his acquisitions are also traders of weapons in the black market, but Patrick believes the professor was killed by another reason. Meanwhile, J. J. LaRoche meets Hightower and say that four agents and she are his prime suspects. Further, he says that Hightower would have the motive to torch Todd Johnson.

"Red Queen" is so far the best episode of the Third Season of "The Mentalist". The plot is now very complicated, with Patrick Jane trying to find who is the link with Red John in the CBI. The plot has many twists and an unexpected conclusion. My vote is nine.

Great episode but perfection seems to be out of reach

Warning: Spoilers
One of the most thrilling episodes aside from the season finales. The only thing I noticed was why Jane did not thank Hightower for saving the lives of Lisbon and him when they were kidnapped (in "Ball of Fire"). Jane tells Hightower, after he helps her escape, that aside from knowing she is innocent, the reason he helped her was to gain an advantage on Red John. The kidnapping wasn't that long ago (S3 E8) and Jane was literally about to be shot to death when Hightower (why did the writers pick her and not Cho or Rigsby?) shot the crazy woman to death.

I do question the lack of clarity in the character development of Jane and Lisbon. In a way, Jane reminds me of NCIS Agent Anthony DiNozzo, who could get the job done but was a jerk A LOT of the time. With Lisbon, I don't know if it is Robin Tunney or the writers who make her character so snarky. I guess the writers do that to create conflict but it is not something you see in better crime dramas, like "Elementary." The crime and investigation should carry each episode. A good example is, by now, all fans of the show should know that Jane and Lisbon get married later on. However, right now, most people wouldn't believe it. No flirting or signs of attraction, even it was only one of them. Jane likes to press everyone's buttons, not just with Lisbon. Is it only the eventual killing of Red John that allows their love to exist? Not buying that.

Very good episode brings up some questions

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was great, the actors performed very well and it is one of the best episodes in the series so far, along with "His Right Red Hand" (2x08). The trailer was deceiving and made you believe that agent Hightower was the killer, but she is actually being framed. Also, Jane's face really freaked me out when he was aiming the shotgun at Hightower, he looked like a madman, like a killer, this episode showed how badly he wanted to catch Red John and the risks he will take to do so. He doesn't even tell Lisbon what he is up to. The other thing was director Bertrum's little poem in the end by William Blake(Same author as the Tiger Tiger poem Red John told Jane in the season 2 finale) This episode got me excited for the next episode and the finale. With Hightower gone I expect Laroche would remain in charge at CBI so I would like to see how he works with that. This episode is like a fresh new start and a set up for so many things that are just waiting to happen. I hope there will be more episodes like this one in the future.

This show is way too predictable

Warning: Spoilers
I had already my problems with the show right off the bat, it's a copy cat of Monk minus the humor. But as I watched more episodes, it's only getting worse...

Before I even watched this episode, I was guessing that they were gonna end the character Hightower. Because she had been gradually disappearing from the show, which is a shame, because I had thought she was a good character and the actress is good, too. When I saw the intro of the episode, I also predicted that Jane was in on it with Hightower and she wasn't actually kidnapping him. It's not because I am a genius or something, it's because this show has awful and very predictable writing. And the real bad thing is Hightower was one of the few things about the show that was kind of good, her relation with the core characters and her acting.

It's always a bad sign for a TV show when they write it on the go, instead of ahead of time, it is especially so for mysteries. Even at best case scenario, this show is a mediocre copy cat.
