- March, 1893. Providence's Roger Williams Park is about to lose its first elephant. Baby Roger, as he is known, is being repossessed by his owner. The children of the city are heartbroken. But salvation is at hand. A letter to the editor of the Providence Journal suggests that the tots raise the money themselves to keep their pachyderm friend in town. The whole city goes wild as they try to save their sweetheart by smashing piggybanks, writing poems, and running pint sized fundraisers. The Ballad of Baby Roger tells the story of this dramatic race to save the young pachyderm, complete with rare archival footage and photos of the real Roger and his compadres, and recitations of the original 110 year old poems by today's young actors.
