R.L. Stine fans, rejoice! We seem to be the middle of a renaissance for projects based on the writing of "The Stephen King of Kids Horror." Thanks to the popularity of Leigh Janiak's terrific "Fear Street" film trilogy, Netflix is reported to be cooking up even more movies based on Stine's slasher-mystery property. There's also a new live-action "Goosebumps" TV show in development at Disney+, which is already home to the lesser-known but genuinely sturdy "Just Beyond" anthology inspired by Stine's genre-blending graphic novel series of the same name.
Elsewhere, shooting is now underway on "Zombie Town," a film based on yet another one of Stine's horror books for younger readers. Published in 2012, the novel follows 12-year-old friends Mike and Karen as they head out to see the titular zombie flick in a theater, only for movie's brain-hungry monsters to lurch off the screen and begin wreaking havoc on their unsuspecting town.

“Ozark” fans, rejoice. The Jason Bateman and Julia Garner-starring drama series is returning to Netflix in April with a second part to its fourth season — and it’s just one of many other hotly anticipated titles coming to the streamer this month.
April will also see the long-awaited sophomore installment to “Russian Doll,” the mind-bending “Groundhog Day”-esque dramedy series starring Natasha Lyonne as a hard-partying New York City woman stuck in a brain-melting circuitous loop from hell.
For fans of capital-m mess, there’s the Spanish-language “Elite,” which traces the scandalous (and often murderous) exploits of the posh attendees of high school Las Encinas. Or, if you prefer your glamorous mess via reality series, “Selling Sunset” — about the lux real estate market in Los Angeles — is premiering its fifth season April 22.

A list of new streaming releases on Netflix, what a concept!
Netflix’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by the return of one of the great sci-fi comedies ever. Natasha Lyonne is set to return as the temporally displaced Nadia on Russian Doll season 2 on April 20. The first season of the show premiered in 2019 and appeared to tell a rather complete story about one Brooklyn woman’s experiences of dying over and over again. But Lyonne and fellow producers Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler still have some story to tell. Netflix is undoubtedly very happy to let them continue to tell it.

As the continuous presence of Adam Sandler more than shows, Netflix‘s Top 10 most-watched list is far from a barometer of quality. Admittedly, the best movies to be found on the streaming service often make their way to the top of the rankings, as does their lineup of star-powered blockbusters, but in recent months the charts have been throwing up a lot more surprises than usual.
Of course, a lot of this has to do with the continued effects of the Coronavirus pandemic, with millions of people finding themselves with a whole lot more free time than they’ve been used to, so it hardly comes a surprise that viewership numbers for every major platform have gone through the roof since March. That being said, some of the titles to rise to the upper echelons of the Top 10 have come completely out of nowhere, and it presents a bizarre snapshot...

As the current pandemic takes yet another boring turn, so far as self-isolation at home is concerned, Netflix is continuing to add a ton of new content on an almost daily basis.
Now that distancing laws have effectively brought our social lives to a halt, binging through the content found on streaming platforms seems like an inevitable form of entertainment to turn to these days. As such, Netflix has repeatedly come out on top and vanquished the competition with its rich library of TV shows and movies. As if that weren’t enough, the company continues to provide and meet the demand of its stupendous userbase with tons of new titles. But which ones are the most popular?

Though it likely won’t remain there for very long given that over 70 new titles just arrived, a rather surprising action flick has been dominating Netflix today.
Surrounded by regulars like 365 Dni, The Nut Job and Despicable Me on the Top 10 movies list is Extraction, with the Bruce Willis-starring film currently the ninth most popular pic on Netflix. And yes, we said Bruce Willis. Not Chris Hemsworth.
While Extraction is a title that immediately brings to mind the massive hit featuring the McU star which dropped a few months ago, this is actually another movie entirely. Rather, it stars Bruce Willis and released back in 2015. And unlike the Hemsworth flick, it’s an entirely forgettable affair.

After only adding one new program on Saturday, Netflix have released two new movies and one new TV series today. Most of the action revolves around Dunst’s character Theresa taking poison-laced joints that, rather than killing her, put her in an increasingly fragile mental state that turns fantastical. There’s more to Korean entertainment than “Parasite,” Bts and “Gangnam Style.” Notably, an animation sector that is responsible for keeping the long-running U.S. hit “The Simpsons” tooned up, but rarely gets the credit.
Independent production company Redrover is in Berlin on a mission to re-establish itself as a leading player in the cartoon industry, where its property “The Nut Job” has the makings of a global franchise, but only a few fans would identify it as Korean.
“Before ‘Parasite,’ ‘Nut Job’ was one of the most successful pieces of Korean intellectual property of all time,” said Chris Lee, an experienced indie sector executive who joined as the company’s head of international affairs in January 2019, after stints at Showbox and running her own acquisitions firm Clp.
She acknowledges that her task is no easy one, and that the company’s recent history is a tear-jerking saga of obstacles on the way of success.

In 2015, it teamed with Ambi Media Group to buy the catalog of Exclusive Media Group. That agreement included rights (including certain sequel and remake rights) to a diverse group of 400-plus titles, including Begin Again, Cruel Intentions, Donnie Darko, Memento, Rush, The Skulls and Sliding Doors.
“We are excited to add Open Road to our portfolio of media and entertainment investments,” said James Masciello, Principal and Portfolio Manager of Raven. “We pride ourselves on our industry focus and have already seen great successes with our 2015 acquisition of the Exclusive Media film library as well as our financing of select independent films.

2nd Update, Thursday Am: Early Am industry estimates are in showing that Funimation’s Dragon Ball Super: Broly had a super opening day with $7.06M at 1,250 venues leading all films at the box office, and overtaking STXfilm/Lantern’s The Upside for the day ($1.69M) and the fourth Wednesday of Warner Bros. Aquaman ($1.2M).
Six-day projections are wild for the film, around $15M+, as folks expect the pic’s run to be significantly front-loaded over the Mlk stretech; most of the fans came out yesterday where the anime film played in 180 Plf screens as well as 56 Imax hubs. Broly will shed those. Universal/Bvi/Blumhouse’s Glass happens tonight at 7Pm.
January isn’t always the typical month to launch animated pics, but Broly‘s Wednesday is 67% of DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 3‘s $10.5M opening Friday, which gives you some sense of the Funimation pic’s power. Kung Fu Panda...

Barcelona-based sales agency Filmax announced today at Argentina’s Ventana Sur market, that it has acquired the rights to the film adaptation of Rtve’s preschool children’s part-puppet, part-live action and part-animated kids’ show “The Lunnis,” titled “The Lunnis and the Great Fairy Tales Adventure.”
The announcement was made with an accompanying trailer for the film, slated to release theatrically in Spain on Jan 18. The acquisition is in line with Filmax’s declared directive to make a concerted push into the world of high-quality, family-oriented cinema, as it did in previously acquiring “The Prince & Me: The Elephant Adventure,” or the animated feature “The Nut Job.”
“Los Lunnis” has scored generations of fans in Spain since first broadcasting in 2003. The series has seen plenty of changes in its 15 years, but has always featured morally-based, educational content, and plenty of puppets. It has often used music to aid in delivering its messages as well.

Raven Capital Management, which had offered a stalking-horse bid of $87.5 million for Open Road last month, will take control of the company after no other bidders emerged in the company’s bankruptcy proceeding.
The auction in Delaware bankruptcy court originally scheduled for November 7 has been canceled (read the court document here).
The winning bid officially ends the ownership of the company by Donald Tang, whose Tang Media Partners acquired Open Road in 2017 and merged it with Stuart Ford’s sales outfit Im Global. While it had rebranded as Global Road, the court filings refer only to Open Road. Originally a thriving independent film entity, Open Road fell on harder times and never achieved liftoff as Global Road.
Raven’s principal, James Masciello, already has some involvement in the film industry. The private equity firm provides financing for Sculptor Media and Masciello is among the producers of its thriller The Importance of Blood,...

Open Road, the latest independent film company to hit the rocks, has received a “stalking-horse” bid of $87.5 million in Delaware bankruptcy court from a buyer identified as “Or Acquisition Co.”
According to court documents, the bid is backed by New York-based private equity firm Raven Capital Management. The firm’s principal, James Masciello, already has some involvement in the film industry. Raven provides financing for Sculptor Media and Masciello is among the producers of its thriller, The Importance of Blood, which was announced over the summer.
A stalking horse effectively sets the bar so that other bidders can’t low-ball the asset. Under bankruptcy rules, representatives of the company to be acquired select the stalking-horse bidder.
A bankruptcy judge in Delaware will weigh in on the bid during a hearing on Thursday. Multiple bidders are expected to take part in the auction for Open Road, which is scheduled for November...

Everyone loves to be pleasantly surprised by a movie. What's even better? Being surprised by being pleasantly surprised by a movie. There is no known expectation of The Nut Job sequel being any good in any way. The 2014 original proved to be one of the worst offenders in the bloated category of irritating animated kids movies. Snarky talking squirrels hatch a scheme to steal the mother load of delicious, sustaining nuts. Annoying wisecracks and grating "comedy" abounds amid subpar animation. In the end, everyone gets what they want: a life of comfort, ease and pleasure as they forever gorge themselves on the abandoned stock in the basement of a closed-down gourmet nut shop, just across the street from their park home. They live...

The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature brings back the characters of the 2014 animated film The Nut Job for another round of puns and slapstick, in a sequel that is a bit better than the original. It works as a summer afternoon’s distraction for young kids but this unoriginal 3D animated movie won’t impress their parents much.
Instead of another heist plot, this time the animals are fighting to save their home from development. Surly Squirrel (Will Arnett), his wordless pal Buddy the rat, pug dog Precious (Maya Rudolph), and the other animals of Liberty Park in Oakton are living the easy life feasting on the contents of the town’s nut shop, even though red squirrel...

Chicago – Anyone showing up to the “The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature” will know exactly what they’re going to get… it’s a late summer sequel to an animated movie you may be surprised was successful enough to warrant a sequel at all, much less a theatrically released one.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
I must admit I did not see the first Nut Job film. However after seeing this sequel, I’m in no hurry to catch up on the further adventures of this rag-tag group of urban woodland creatures. But before I get too into it though I want to throw a few pebbles of faint praise. We truly live in a golden age of animation because even third tier hand-me-downs like this one are competently animated and put together. It may not have an iota of the heart of Pixar’s best, but at least it doesn’t look...

“So much for peaceful protests!,” an animated squirrel announces during the first act of “The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature,” before forcefully attacking an intruding bulldozer with his tiny squirrel teeth. It’s likely the year’s most unexpected endorsement of violent disobedience — and one that, at least temporarily, pays off in the context of the animated sequel — but it’s also par for the course for a series that’s already rooted in political discourse, as explained by the machinations of some clever squirrels. Tackling heady issues in the guise of a kids’ movie is nothing new for the burgeoning “Nut Job” franchise, which memorably took on (and took down) the virtues of socialism in the first film, but “The Nut Job 2” goes full throttle on the timely stuff, resulting in a (slightly) more thoughtful and entertaining outing.

Around this time last year Suicide Squad debuted to the tune of $133.6 million and gave the 2016 summer movie season a much-needed jolt. This year the summer movie season is in the midst of a slump, off nearly 9% compared to last year and don't expect this weekend to turn things around. Sony's adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower should top the box office, but only with an opening around $20 million while fellow new wide release Kidnap appears unlikely to crack double digits. Meanwhile, Annapurna will deliver Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit nationwide following its limited release last weekend as it looks for a spot in the weekend top five among the holdovers. Back in 2010, Universal set a 2013 release date for The Dark Tower. At the time, Ron Howard was set to direct the Stephen King adaptation and there was talk of telling King's sci-fi fantasy story across both film and television.

Bored with massive films and special effects? Then here are 10 smaller movies well worth your consideration...
It's that time of year when we usually give you a list of films playing in cinemas during August, as the summer blockbuster season winds down, that will help cleanse your palate after all the tentpoles and sequels that have proliferated throughout the year so far. But to be honest, this summer has been so good to us, we're more refreshed than usual.
Even aside from originals like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, this year's blockbusters have been of an unusually high standard. Wonder Woman pulled the Dceu out of its critical nosedive, War For The Planet Of The Apes is a gorgeous and emotional conclusion to the reboot trilogy, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming proved that Marvel's ever expanding continuity is still going strong.
