- Daniel throws down a challenge for a grudge match against the cricket team from Little Garth, whose captain Larry Jupp is a notorious cheat. But with Thomas away, there are no star players in the Candleford side until it transpires that Margaret is an excellent batswoman. However, women are disallowed from playing so the Pratt sisters disguise her as a man. Laura, feeling Daniel is obsessive about the game, talks Margaret out of playing, and the team does badly...until Dorcas comes up with an idea. Gabriel also comes to see why Dorcas will never marry.—don @ minifie-1
- Daniel is upset over the results of his cricket match where he he feels the team led by Lawrence Jupp won by cheating. The women around him think he is raising the results of a simple game to that of a Greek tragedy but he persists. Minnie suggests that they just have another match to settle it all. They are a player short, however, with Thomas Brown away, and recruit Alf and Edmund Timmins, but they're not quite up to the mark. There is one person in Candleford who seems to be expert with the bat but the rules may prevent that person from playing. Daniel is so obsessed with cricket that Laura can't possibly interest him in the two very old tombstones she found in the wood. She sets out to find a bit of history on those buried there. Gabriel is acting mysteriously, observing the men working in the fields at Lark Rise.—garykmcd
