Kaya Scodelario has signed on for the lead role in the upcoming Netflix drama “Spinning Out,” Variety has learned.
Scodelario takes over the role that was previously held by Emma Roberts, who bowed out in October. She stars as Kat Baker, an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who’s about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pair skater with a talented bad-boy partner, she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life. On and off the ice, Kat and her new partner will face daunting odds, injury to body and soul, financial sacrifice, and even potential mental breakdown on their way to realizing their Olympic dream.
As previously announced, Netflix has ordered 10 episodes.
The series was created by Samantha Stratton, who will serve as an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Lara Olsen.

A conversation with three East is East cast members resulted in an interview exploring multitude avenues.
Speaking exclusively to Amit Shah, Ashley Kumar and Rani Moorthy, we heavily explored identity, what finding oneself entails, the strengths and weaknesses of being human, the history of Bollywood, women’s power, suppression and even Shah Rukh Khan!

British actor Michael Socha has landed one of the three leads in ABC‘s Once Upon A Time spinoff presentation. The project, from Once Upon A Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, takes place in pre-curse Wonderland. The story is told through the point of view of Alice, who is surrounded by two major characters, The Knave of Hearts (Socha), a sardonic adventurer, a man of action, a loner and a heart-breaker; and Amahl, described as exotic, soulful and optimistic. Kitsis and Horowitz are writing the 15-20-page, four-scene presentation with input from Zack Estrin and Jane Espenson. Production is slated to begin April 7 in Vancouver, immediately following the season wrap of Once there. If the project goes to series, Estrin is expected to run it with Kitsis and Horowitz, while Espenson, who has been a key member of Once’s writing staff since after the pilot, will likely return to the flagship drama,...

The Sweeney (15)
(Nick Love, 2012, UK) Ray Winstone, Ben Drew, Hayley Atwell, Damian Lewis, 112 mins
The original TV cop show has been so updated here, it barely registers as the same product. But for all the steely modern cityscapes and pulsating action, this a 21st century cop thriller with 1970s values, both in terms of its shouty, louty, rule-bending lawmen (Winstone is a parody of himself) and its "hand in your badge" cop-movie cliches. And as for political correctness – leave it aaaaht!
Premium Rush (12A)
(David Koepp, 2012, Us) Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dania Ramirez, Michael Shannon. 91 mins
This zippy-chase thriller puts you in the saddle of an ace New York cycle courier, seeking to deliver a mystery package that everyone's after. It's a carbon-neutral Speed.
To Rome With Love (12A)
(Woody Allen, 2012, Us/Ita/Spa) Jesse Eisenberg, Penélope Cruz, 112 mins
After the blip of Midnight In Paris, it's back to the usual late-period...

It’s Friday, so you know what that means – another round-up of what films are hitting cinemas this weekend; and this week it’s a mixed bag – from the awesome animated feature ParaNorman to a pair of UK gangster flicks the widely released The Sweeney and the limited release indie Twenty8k.
Nationwide Releases ParaNorman
In ParaNorman, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits. ParaNorman Review
The Sweeney

It was a relatively poor few days in terms of cinema attendances this past weekend as the general public made the collective decision to make the most of one last dose of sunshine before five months of jumpers, freezing mornings and flood warnings. In fact, the market was so bad this past weekend, takings were actually down nearly 30% on the same time last year. Thanks to this relatively low cinematic turnout, Dredd 3D, which became the first 18 certificate film to top the chart since Saw 3D back in October 2010, did so with only just over £1million grossed. This was the lowest total gross to clinch the top spot since Ice Age 4 limped its way to the top a few months back.

TWENTY8K
Stars: Parminder Nagra, Kaya Scodelario, Michael Socha, Jonas Armstrong, Nichola Burley, Stephen Dillane, Kierston Wareing | Written by Paul Abbott, Jimmy Dowdall | Directed by David Kew, Neil Thompson
Don’t let Twenty8k‘s yoof-speak title fool you; this murder mystery’s as old-fashioned as they come. A Paris-based fashionista, Deeva (Parminder Nagra), returns to her hometown of London in order to clear her brother’s name of murder. He seems a likely suspect, but something doesn’t seem quite right and naturally there’s a gigantic conspiracy behind it all. Damning evidence comes to light, witnesses are offed and a character who seemed trustworthy turns out to be not so trustworthy after all.
Trust me when I say you’ve seen this movie. The plotting’s not bad, and the twist and turns keep you guessing for the bulk of the film, but when the curtain’s drawn and the...

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending in Newham the set of a new and exciting British production, Twenty8k (2012). Co-directed by David Kew and Neil Thompson, produced by Martin Carr and starring Parminder Nagra, Stephen Dillane, Jonas Armstrong and Kierson Wareing; in a script written by Paul Abbott. It tells the story of a young woman who returns home to East London to defend the name of her brother who has been branded a murderer, but as she seeks to uncover the truth, lies and conspiracy come to the fore with twists aplenty.
