Earlier this month, we shared the news that Anchor Bay Entertainment – which used to be a major player in the horror world back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, when they gave DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more – is being revived, with their first two releases puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen. Now we’ve learned that the new Anchor Bay has acquired the North American rights to the horror/comedy Crust, with the plan being to release it sometime later this year.

In a deal that closed at the EFM over the weekend revived genre label Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the horror comedy Crust featuring a cast of genre veterans and Succession star Alan Ruck.
Sean Whalen, who starred in Wes Craven’s The People Under The Stairs, makes his feature directorial debut on the story, and stars as Vegas Winters, a depressed washed-up child actor who fled Tinseltown and owns and lives in a rundown laundromat.

Written by Sean Whalen and Jim Wald, Crust tells the story of a lonely laundromat owner, Vegas Winters (Whalen), who keeps the leftover socks from customers and uses them to clean himself. Prolific character actor Sean Whalen may be best known for playing Roach in Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs, but he has over 140 other screen acting credits to his name as of today, and now he’s set to make his feature directorial debut with a horror movie called Crust… a strange tale that involves a sock monster. Whalen has reserved the lead role for himself, but Deadline reports that he’s also building up a strong supporting cast. Succession‘s Alan Ruck (who may still be best known for playing Cameron in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and genre regular Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp) have joined the cast, which also includes Daniel Roebuck (Rob Zombie’s The Munsters), Rebekah Kennedy (Two Witches), Shawntay Dalon (Detroiters), Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare) and Daniel John Kearney (Dark Circles).

Life After Pop is a tricky proposition, especially for those who are thrown into Top 40’s tornado at a young age. But in some cases, an early, disenchanting brush with the commercial mainstream can be galvanizing, providing a source of direction — even if it’s just away from what came before.
Take Ryan Beatty. As a teen, he racked up millions of views with YouTube cover songs, then jumped headlong into the Top 40 pop game, turned against it, and split from his management. No surprise, then, that two years ago...

Dark circles under the eye, acne scars and pigmentation are reasons concealer exists. Here's the problem: Using too much concealer can take away from natural-looking makeup, but not using enough will keep those pesky spots visible. What's a girl to do? Color correct. Just ask Gregory Arlt, the celebrity makeup artist responsible for the flawless faces of Gwen Stefani, Angelina Jolie and This Is Us star Susan Kelechi Watson. "If you truly need color-correcting, think color theory. On lighter skin tones, under the eye can appear a bit purple. Peach cancels purple. Using a peach-based concealer will covers those dark circles," he told E! News. "On darker skin tones, if there are brown spots,...

Churni Ganguly’s National Award winning film Nirbashito (The Banished) is both an unflinching and compassionate look at the idea of exile, through the story of a writer, a poet, whose work has so inflamed political sensibilities that she ends up banished from her homeland, forceably torn from her home, moments after fussing over and feeding her beloved cat, Baaghini, which is the last thing she looks at as she is dragged out the door, flown to Rajasthan, taken to Delhi, and from there out of the country, under tight security. Nowhere, it seems, is safe for this writer. Nowhere in India, at least, and perhaps nowhere in the world, as the tight security which her Swedish protectors provide for her once she arrives in Stockholm shows.

Anyone who calls themselves a horror geek knows who After Dark Films is by now -- even if they don't know it. What began as a multi-film release structure (8 horror films on the same day?!?) has now slowed down to a virtual trickle, and the company's most recent releases -- Dark Circles, Red Clover, and the non-horror flick The Getaway -- haven't done much for the outfit's popularity. And now they deliver something called Ritual. It's not very good.
Clearly inspired by low-key indie horror films (like the ones Ti West makes, so at least writer/director Mickey Keating has good taste in viewing material), Ritual has some decent components in its corner, but its meandering plot, confused narrative structure, and frequently familiar story trappings prevent the "decent components" from gaining much of a foothold. The score, by one Giona Ostinelli, is pretty solid, for example, as is leading lady Lisa Marie Summerscales,...

After the marketing blitz of the After Dark Horrorfest films, some of which were fun and others were abysmal, the production company decided to branch out into the original content arena. These releases, done on independent-film budgets and often leaving any real lasting impact, are straight-to-dvd horror films that are more suited to screening on a lazy weekend afternoon on the Chiller channel than anything that would become someone's new favorite film. Still, I've been a fan of Johnathon Schaech since The Doom Generation, so when I saw Dark Circles sitting on the new release shelf at my local video store, I picked it up.
Following in the footsteps of other recent horror releases like Baby Blues, Dark Circles fixates on the stress and pressure put upon new parents in the aftermath of an addition to the family.

Dark Circles is a refreshingly unpretentious straightforward horror movie. Even the title Dark Circles seems to be little more than a direct reference to the fact that the two main characters are really really tired. With that in mind this movie is not for everyone as it is truly a slow burn horror film perhaps best compared to Ti Wests The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. While not as good as those films they make for apt comparison.

I have always thought that having a child was the most terrifying thing a person can experience. Think about it: you’re bringing a new life into the world, you’re forced to completely change the way you live and behave, and it’s up to you to keep that baby alive. What could be scarier than having another life rely on you to survive? Well, the new After Dark Original movie Dark Circles shows the struggles of being a new parent intensified by unexplained activity, making the whole “having a baby” thing seem like the least of a parent’s worries.

Broken Lizard alum Paul Soter is taking a break from outlandish, wacky comedies like Super Troopers and Beerfest and going in a different direction: horror, pure and simple. In his new film, Dark Circles, not a laugh is to be had in this dark psychological horror flick about new parents who fall apart when sleep deprivation gets the better of them. We spoke with Paul about his love of horror movies, how this film was inspired by his real-life experience as a new dad, and how horror differs from Broken Lizard films.
Where did the idea for Dark Circles come from?
It’s somewhat biographical. When I had my first kid a couple years ago, we kind of did the same thing. We moved into a house without doing our due diligence. We had our baby and found out there were tear-downs going on all over our neighborhood. Having a baby cry all night,...

There are two very broad, distinct, and (fine) obvious types of horror stories being told in the new indie thriller from After Dark Films (Originals). In one corner we have the "happy family in a creepy house they just bought to get away from the city" stuff and in the other is the "evil female specter who may or may not be real but definitely seems to covet the couple's infant" material. Adding to the patchwork feel of the premise are some touches, characters, and ideas that are inspired by a wide array of recent (mostly indie or foreign) supernatural thrillers...
In other words, Dark Circles will be thoroughly familiar (perhaps even predictable) to anyone who watches a lot of horror movies, but that's not to say you won't find some creepy moments and worthwhile assets scattered across the flick. For example, writer/director Paul Soter seems to actually care about his central characters.

This week Lionsgate and After Dark are releasing their indie thriller Dark Circles, which was written and directed by “Broken Lizard” alum Paul Soter.
Starring Johnathon Schaech and Pell James, Dark Circles follows brand-new parents Alex and Penny, who are suffering endless insomnia due to their new bundle of joy who isn’t able to sleep more than 15 minutes continuously. As their minds begin to crumble, both Alex and Penny begin to see disturbing hallucinations that only add to their growing paranoia and fear, ultimately forcing them to question what’s real and what isn’t around them.

This week writer/director Paul Soter’s intensely creepy thriller Dark Circles (review) arrives on DVD, VOD and more courtesy of Lionsgate and After Dark Originals.
Starring Johnathon Schaech and Pell James, Dark Circles follows new parents Alex and Penny, who move to the country with their infant in hopes of a normal life and upbringing for their son, but neither of them is prepared for the consistent sleepless nights when their little one can’t sleep for more than 15 minutes, which preys on their ever-diminishing fragile mental states. As both parents begin to experience strange figures and disturbances around their house, neither can determine if what’s happening is something more sinister or if it’s just their minds playing tricks on them (cue the Geto Boys).

*there are spoilers here. Tagline: "In this home, no one sleeps." Director/writer: Paul Soter. Cast: Johnathon Schaech, Andrea Frankle, Pell James, and Philippe Brenninkmeyer. Dark Circles is an indie horror title from the After Dark Originals label. The film has been shot by first time feature filmmaker Paul Soter and much of the action onscreen is confined to one set. In a large house, a family must deal with a haunting and possibly a crazed lunatic. What is real is mostly left up to the viewer. However, a few horror fans might be tempted to decide if events are hallucinations or something more dangerous. And, this well shot film is continuously entertaining. Dark Circles focuses on a husband and wife. Alex (Johnathon Schaech) and Penny (Pell James) have their hands full with a new child to raise and a new home to settle into. 3096 is an upcoming movie based on the real-life case of Natascha Kampusch, and in case you’re not so familiar with this story – I will right here at the beginning warn you that the whole thing looks terrifying. Directed by Sherry Horman and described as a story about the triumph of the human spirit, this drama opens next month in Germany. Still nothing about the Us release date, but at least we have the first trailer, poster & images to share with you, make sure you check them out!
Hormann directed the controversial biopic from a script written by Oscar-nominated producer Bernd Eichinger (who was working on the script when he died suddenly in January) and Ruth Thoma (who completed Eichinger’s unfinished screenplay).
As we said – the movie centers on Natascha Kampusch, kidnapped in 1998, when she was only 10, and held hostage in a cellar by Wolfgang Priklopil until 2006 (not hard...

Written and directed by Broken Lizard's Paul Soter (who previously dabbled in horror with the ensemble's splatter comedy Club Dread), Dark Circles stars Johnathan Schaech and Pell James as "new parents Alex and Penny, who retreat from the city and move into a place outside town, but the stress and massive sleep-deprivation caused by their infant has both of them seeing things in the house that may or may not exist. Persistent sightings of a strange woman has each of them wondering if they are suffering from hallucinations, or if their new home holds a dark, supernatural presence. As their fragile grasp on reality spirals into delirium, Alex and Penny find themselves nearly helpless to deal with the horrific truth of what is really going on in this house."
Undoubtedly touching on the terror that comes with a newborn, Soter says, "Hopefully this will serve as some kind of cinematic equivalent to birth control.

The annual After Dark Films slate of horror movies is something I like to keep an eye on, and every year I try to watch as many of them as possible because invariably they turn out to be pretty good, sometimes even damn good. The first title in the company’s 2013 offering is “Dark Circles”, the trailer for which you can check out below if you’re so inclined. It doesn’t look half bad. The fact that it hails from Paul Soter, one of the writer/director/actor from the “Broken Lizard” troupe makes it that much more of a curious title. And no, it’s not a wink-wink horror movie. It straight-up horror. When new parents Alex and Penny retreat from the city and move into a place outside town, the stress and massive sleep-deprivation caused by their infant has both of them seeing things in the house...

Dark Circles – no sleep! In other words: in this house no one sleeps! Just saw the first trailer for the upcoming horror movie which comes from director Paul Soter, and I don’t know what to say… it looks pretty cool to me. Basically, we’re dealing with some hallucinations, supernatural things, insomnia and stuff like that, so yeah – not bad at all, check it out in the rest of this report!
So, written and directed by Paul Soter, this horror movie (or, even better – another psychological thriller) follows young parents who move to a 19th century farmhouse in the country once their new child is born.
Happy family? Think again!
Or, even better – read the official synopsis:

The After Dark Film Festival will host eight new indie horror features this year. After Dark has already announced that Paul Soter's Dark Circles and the Irish themed Red Clover will participate. Also taking part is Todor Chapkanov's Asylum. This looks like a bloody title involving the supernatural, spirituality and a whole institution run amok. The story is simple. When a troupe of soldiers are sent in a la Aliens, they find the fight of their lives. The first trailer for Asylum is available. In the clip, a small army group must face hundreds of escaped patients. Even the staff seems infected with a powerful and seductive force.
