That 10/10 rating is definitely from family probably.

This movie had so much potential. I don't know if they ran out of money or what. Very creepy, but man they blew it!

Don't believe the hype
stephendlancaster25 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
You will fall asleep.

It is like somebody tried to make a horror movie but really didn't know how. There is barely any inkling of anything horror in this movie. It is mostly about a stoner who sleepwalks after a Ouija board session links him to a girl in a coma.

Nobody dies. No gore. There isn't a single real threat in the movie at all.

It's just two drunk guys and their girlfriends, one who sleepwalks, the other who is trying to figure out why, and a girl living above them in a coma.

The girls freak out at seeing the roommate sleepwalking because he talks in his sleep. That's the apex of the "horror."

Why a cello is in the artwork I will never know. There is one scene with a cello laying on a couch and that's it. So much of this movie leaves you scratching your head. The writer attempted to be deep, but failed miserably. It is a mess.

"Scary" music was placed over scenes in an attempt to create tension, but even that failed. A lot of it was just out of place and there for no reason.

It took a lot for me to finish the movie. I read two great critic reviews (which must have been bought or the people involved knew them) and kept hoping the movie was going to flip into something amazing. I was wrong.

I typically won't call a movie boring, but I have no choice here.

You might call this movie a light thriller made for television for stoner teenagers. But horror, deep, and full of smart layers it is not.

Absolutely zero is explained as to why the Ouija caused the connection and sleepwalking, why the girl upstairs is in a coma, and where they are going in the end.

I gave it three stars because the first few minutes of the movie with the Ouija actually set up what could have been a decent movie, but then the rest of the movie happens.

Interesting idea that leads nowhere
jmbovan-47-16017323 October 2022
So two friends are roommates. One is a jerk; the other decent but a bro. The jerk starts acting odd, walking and behaving in his sleep, talking in Russian, etc. There is some subplot of the manager/owner of the apartment building that is under-funded of information and ideas to total to anything. There is something going on, but it's never fully explained leaving me and the movie without much point. Acting isn't bad but mediocre. The main character, decent bro, does well in carrying the film, but he doesn't have much to work with from the script. Not horrible to watch given the overall quality of the producrion, but it needed more development to elevate to something truly haunting.

I can't believe...
Pegasus-1019 April 2022
...no other reviewers mentioned this as a cure for insomnia. Unlikable characters and no tension resulted in fast-forwarding until I gave up a third of the way through.

The first time I've ever felt compelled to tell people to walk away now!
beccaboo-9980025 July 2019
This is without doubt the worst horror movie I have ever seen. I watch horror movies, every day, and I always watch to the end in case I miss the point, however terrible the movie appears.

I regret watching to the end of this one. Zero redeeming features, zero story and horrible acting. Don't even waste another second of your life considering it!

Oh dear oh dear, I've just wasted a part of my life!!
cbarnett-1622126 July 2019
Wow, where to start with this 'film' how on earth did this movie ever get the funds to be made is beyond belief! This movie is shockingly boring and incomprehensible, confusion reigns throughout and when the end credits roll you will be sat as I was for 10 minutes thinking 'what has just happened'.... The choice is yours... if you don't believe me then give it a watch, but at the end the end of the day it is a waste of your precious time. The positive reviews must be from people who were involved in the making of this nonsensical garbage...You have been warned my good people of good taste!!

Absolutely Sucks
meganhow6 April 2022
Don't even waste your time watching this. This movie absolutely sucks so bad. The plot is not clear, it's slow, and they expect you to know more than they tell you. Just don't watch it go watch something like Looney Tunes you'll have a better time.

So much potential, but unfinished
wwpqjdtfpg28 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First, I'm so glad I didn't look at the reviews before I started because I really don't think it deserves such a low rating. I actually enjoyed this movie for the first hour or so & was excited it was so short. No unnecessary fluff. But then I realized it's so short because it doesn't have an ending. Not one that's at all satisfying it resolves anything.

Pros: i was really intrigued by this psychic connection that was supposedly happening. Why is this girl being held hostage? Why do they have a connection? What does this mean?! Such potential.

I actually enjoyed some of the writing here. I actually laughed a few times, it's really not bad like some people are saying.

Cons: there's no final act. It ends with a scene that wraps nothing up at all, no questions answered, and frankly more questions than I came in with.

Overall, so much potential on a tight budget, but just didn't follow through. It's short so not a huge commitment lost, but it left me wanting more and not in the way you'd want.

Small costume budget a major plus
skipoc13 April 2022
The only reason I gave this garbage 2 stars is because I found both leads attractive and they were shirtless and in underwear a lot. That's it. The movie itself was painfully bad, poorly edited and directed with a script that wouldn't get a second read in high school. The film made no sense and offered no hint of horror or even suspense.

"F### Your Laundry, Andre!"
neiljdevlin30 April 2022
Insomnium is a special kind of film. A film where you get to see exactly what you want out of a bad movie: earnest, unlikable characters, 4 actors, one location and a budget spent on 2 sets of contact lenses.

Nothing of note happens in this movie but so many amazing THINGS happen: Ouija pronounced "wee-jah!" Old men cast as young men Excessive toxic masculinity Excessive substance abuse Excessive repression of emotions Excessive over-exagerration Possibly one actor playing multiple characters but with hair-dye and bad accent. (You can't convince me these are different actors.) You get two great women: a too-horned-up gf and a helpful, if hysterical witch.

The amazing dialogue is muttered toward the wall and it reads like a bot that watched only teen movies.

The accents are vaguely foreignery.

Keep your eyes peeled for the body-dragging scene!

I really can't thank the director enough for the laughter you brought to my home. Would make a great double-feature with the slightly more abysmal FARM.

What a refreshing way to waste a movie.
chris-4280015 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There are so many low reviews for what is a really good film (for the most part). I have rarely seen a movie with such realistic dialogue. The actor's lines are straight out of real life conversations without the overly dramatic slant of most horror films. And, just as surprisingly, the cliche-free direction keeps the characters actions totally believable. Not once does anyone do something blindingly stupid like go down into a darkened basement after hearing scary noises. Yet, the suspense builds like a slow boil. The acting is excellent all around. Unfortunately, this is all discounted by the terrible ending. Nothing gets explained or resolved. Otherwise, I would have given it two more stars.

You could have done better!
PiAnt28 July 2019
It's like the movie you come up with while sitting around with friends after a dinner and a few drinks and deciding to make a movie.

Which you did over the next couple of days.

Except you'd have done it better.

You should only see this movie to see where you would have gone wrong.

ho hum
killercharm11 July 2020
Ho hum flick about a guy who becomes the target of an abusive neighbor. His eyes go funny and he becomes a sort of zombie/servant. The reactions and timing of the characters are ridiculous. I love me some horror and therefore have bought into the prerequisite that people act stupid in horror flicks but in this case it isn't worth it.

If there was a story of any kind in this film I couldn't find it. How this movie got a 4.6 rating has to be because people scammed this website. What a scam of a movie!

90 minutes I'll never get back
mkaiser-212038 October 2022
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my entire life. Everything about this movie is bad: acting, writing, pacing, costumes, even the music is bad.

The protagonist is so unlikeable and all of the characters have absolutely zero depth to them. The film starts and ends abruptly with no explanation or context to the events that happen. It doesn't even give you a chance to be scared because you have no idea what's happening.

The characters spend most of the movie on drugs, and I think the director also did the same. I would not recommend this movie to anyone for any reason other than to help them fall asleep.

More Accurate Title: Snooze
samrvs-0236919 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I gave it two stars for the decent acting, otherwise, it would have been one. Obviously, the filmmakers knew how to tell a story, but they phoned this one in.

The plot drags weakly along and falls into the "slow burn" category, which I think is a euphemism for "Seventy minutes of the most mundane and pointless scenes, followed by ten minutes of something reluctantly approaching horror." Most of the time is taken up by meals, smoking, abstaining from smoking, and Skype-style calls. Lover's spats and cannabis-fueled arguments (which reduce to "Stop doing that man. It's weird.") add a thin veneer of attempted drama.

The main suspenseful situation was essentially the same sleepwalking scene played over and over with minor details rearranged.

The ending was a senseless non-event. SPOILER: Literally two characters simply look at each other.

Bless their hearts! I know they really tried.
davidahenning11 December 2023
I'm a pretty positive person. I always try to see the bright side of things especially for an indie horror film - one of my favorite genres. So there are some positive things that can be said about Insomnium. For instance, some reviews said this film was a cure for insomnia but I had very different experience. Insomnium kept me guessing the whole time. Questions like: "It's daytime, right? Or is it night? I can't tell." And "Who throws toothbrushes at someone??" "Why do they only make video-calls?" "Who the heck is SHE?" And so many other questions right up to the end.

I like Brad Pennington (although I can't think of anything he was in) so I was kind of routing for this film. That's why I gave it such a high rating - 2 stars. I'm sure he did his best with the script he was given. And I wish Scott Powers the best in all of his future endeavors.

Another positive thing I can say about Insomnium is that it has a plot. Somewhere, mid way through the movie, I figured that there was nothing more to the plot than "sleeping roommate causes tension." (A side note: The roommate with insomnia is asleep through most of the movie. Don't let that detail distract you.) In the end, in the last seen, the last shot in fact, I realized that there was a much more complicated plot. This little surprise was craftily hidden from the viewer. Most filmmakers rely on devices like foreshadowing to keep the viewer interested. Not so here. Of course, I will not spoil the film for you by trying to explain. You'll have to watch to the end, like I did, to catch this clever twist.

All in all I felt that I had been, somehow, cheated out of 80 minutes that I could never get back. But as I thought about this film all the next day (which is usually my indicator of a great film for me) I realized that Insomnium showed me how important the little details are. The tiny little scenes that denote the passage of time or explains the presence of a new character, the dialog that sets up a protagonist's explosive reaction to a situation... Insomnium emphasizes these little clips by their omission. I have to admit, I enjoyed this film more than any other awful film I've seen.

Had to make an account to review this garbage.
sebastiankun-8071921 October 2022
This movie is SO godawful I had to make an account to write a review. I don't think I've ever seen a worse movie than this. LITERALLY NOTHING HAPPENS, more than half the movie is just them sitting around doing drugs, and like 5 mins out of the film is focused on "spooky stuff". My friend and I eventually gave up on it a little more than halfway into the movie and skipped through about the last half hour, and it still looked like literally nothing happens except for like the last 2 mins. Not the mention the TERRIBLE acting, No story at all, as far as I know nothing is explained. Pure trash. Whoever made this needs to rethink their careers.

Just for the random signed Neil Diamond poster. That had me cracking up. Kudos. A plus for dumb props that make no sense. The rest.... take it or leave it.

Watch this!!
lilp-3439111 July 2019
Even after my fourth time seeing Insomnium, I still found myself clutching my pillow during certain moments and finding new details in the film to consider. There are layers to this story that are so subtle they pull you in without you noticing. And then you're left (in a good way) with lots of questions and the desire to watch again so you can catch all those details that really make this movie great. I can't wait to watch it again and can't wait for what comes next...

Weirdly not bad at all!
smoqnote6 April 2022
I'm constantly craving horror movies, but most of the obscure horror genre stuff I come across is pretty awful, so I assumed this would be the same. Maybe it's because my expectations were low going in, but I actually enjoyed this movie. I loved the dynamic between the roommates, and I think the acting was actually really good; like better than most of the big-budget films I've seen good. I guess I wouldn't classify it as horror myself, but I wouldn't say that counts against it. Overall, I think this was well done!
