Irene Cara as Bertha Palmer, mother of Alex Haley
kevinolzak15 January 2017
Chapter three starts off with Bertha George Palmer (Irene Cara) leaving Henning to attend Lane College in North Carolina, where she meets Simon Haley (Dorian Harewood), whose dirt poor sharecropper father Alec (Hal Williams) allowed wife Queen (Ruby Dee, earning an Emmy nomination) to enable their son to meet his agricultural aspirations. The sophisticated Bertha falls for Simon's ambition and determination, which sadly results in them spending very little time together, as he skips graduation to join the army for duty overseas during World War 1. Back in Henning her father Will Palmer (Stan Shaw) observes a rebirth of the KKK, and its persecution of a kindly Jewish tailor (George Voskovec). Among several fine performances, James Daly plays his final role, and Ossie Davis scores as a veteran railroad conductor.
