“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is a more typical summer movie season-starter than last week’s disappointing “The Fall Guy” (Universal). It’s a franchise film and it’s from Disney (which usually starts things off with a Marvel film).
It’s expected to open to over $50 million this weekend and become the first to gross over $100 million domestic. Industry sources suggest that over the summer, at least eight other releases (extending to early September) will reach this mark. A week ago, that guess would gave been 10.
The same sources pegged “The Fall Guy” as likely to gross over $125 million in the U.S./Canada. This weekend will clarify its fate, but the current trajectory suggests around $80 million. That’s a disappointment for theaters as well as Universal, which spent around $140 million to make the film before marketing.
“Apes” is one of several titles now projected in the $125-$150 million range.

Say hello to sequel season.
That might as well be the nickname for this summer’s slate of potential blockbusters. Over the next four months, Hollywood is rolling out what it hopes will be a winning mix of follow-ups, reboots and spinoffs from tested franchises like “Despicable Me” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it looks to reinvigorate the shaky movie theater business.
Last summer flipped the script: New properties, such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” ruled, while entries in aging series, like “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Mission Impossible 7,” missed the mark. This time out, the tried-and-true may yet prevail. Original offerings like Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s action-comedy “The Fall Guy” and Kevin Costner’s Western “Horizon: An American Saga” will attempt to lure audiences. But analysts anticipate that overly familiar brands — “Despicable Me 4,” Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2...

It seems that 2023 has been a great year for Hong Kong family/social dramas, with titles like “Fly me to the Moon” , “Lost Love” and “In Broad Daylight” having a significant impact in the industry. Nick Cheuk's feature debut “Time Still Turns the Pages” can easily be added in the same list, in a film that deals with how the actions of parents affect and shape their children.
Time Still Turns the Pages is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival 2024

Despite being 81 years old, legendary Hollywood director and Oscar winner Martin Scorsese is not ready to retire. After his most recent film, Killers of the Flower Moon, was nominated for numerous awards, the acclaimed filmmaker is seemingly eyeing a new project and while it has yet to be greenlit, Scorsese has seemingly begun to put together a star-filled cast. The movie in question is a biopic about legendary singer and actor Frank Sinatra, and knowing Scorsese’s background in music, this biopic promises to be amazing.
Frank Sinatra is a legendary figure in American pop culture. He is first and foremost known as a musician, a talented singer with evergreen hits like “Fly Me to the Moon,” “New York, New York,” and “My Way,” but he was also a very talented and popular actor. Sinatra won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in From Here to Eternity...

‘Fly Me to the Moon’ trailer lets Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum play among the stars [Watch]
“Fly Me to the Moon,” a Space Race-set romantic comedy starring two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, is about to blast off. On Monday, Apple TV+ released a trailer for the film, which lands on screens this summer via a distribution deal with Sony Pictures.
“Fly Me to the Moon” tells a fictitious story set in the late ‘60s during the lead-up to the Moon Landing. Johansson, who also serves as a producer, stars as Kelly Jones, a marketing mastermind hired by NASA to improve the space program’s image. She has professional and romantic tension with Cole Davis (Tatum), a by-the-book launch commander. Things get really wild when Jones is ordered to film a fake moon landing, just in case the real one doesn’t work. And yes, there is a Stanley Kubrick joke.

Sony and Apple have released the first trailer for “Fly Me to the Moon,” a romantic comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, which is set to premiere on July 12. The film is set against the 1960s space race and features Johansson as a marketing exec hired by NASA to film a fake moon landing in case the real mission fails. Apple won the project in a $100 million deal following a bidding war in 2022, and the project was formerly known as “Project Artemis.”
Chris Evans was first set to play Tatum’s role, while Oscar nominee Johansson — who also produces — has been attached to the film since its inception. Jason Bateman was originally set as the film’s director but left the project due to creative differences. His exit altered the shooting schedule and meant Evans could not complete the project and Netflix’s “Pain Hustlers” at the same time.

Here are a few interesting and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles:
The Night Stalker – Many people might not remember Darin McGavin's as Kolchak in the short-lived '70s supernatural crime series (even fewer might recall Stuart Townsend's turn in the much shorter-lived remake). But, Johnny Depp must've been a fan. He's developing a feature adaptation of the show with Disney and his Infinitum Nihil.
Jamaica – Seth Rogen and his Superbad super-partner Evan Goldberg are backing Jonathan Levine's comedy about a teenager who travels to the Caribbean with his grandmother.
We Froze the First Man – Oscar winner Errol Morris has tapped Paul Rudd to star in his Mad Men-era, non-docu dramedy about the early days of cryogenics. Stranger Than Fiction scribe Zach Helm wrote the screenplay, which was inspired by a Robert F. Nelson's memoir "We Froze the First Man" and an segment from NPR's "This American Life".
Fly Me to the Moon – Diane Kruger and Danny Boon star in this French production directed by Pascal Chaumeil. The romcom centers on a happily-engaged woman with a plan to break her family curse where every first marriage ends in divorce.
Banjo & Matilda –Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) directs this Australian drama written by Young Einstein co-writer David Roach (whatever happened to Yahoo Serious?) . The film follows a city poet and journalist who travels to the edge of the outback in order to track down a political agitator.
