Making of Piranha, The (2010)

*** (out of 4)

Nice, 19-minute documentary about the making of Joe Dante's 1978 cult-classic PIRANHA. This was released as part of the recent DVD/Blu-ray from Shout! Factory and it's certainly going to be a welcomed addition to fans of the film. Joe Dante, Roger Corman, Dick Miller, Belinda Bakaski, Peter Kuran and Robert Short are all interviewed and they share their thoughts on the making of a low-budget film. Corman starts off talking about how they were meaning to cash-in on the success of JAWS but instead of doing a "big" killer they decided to go the opposite way and come up with the smallest killer possible. Dante talks about how he was offered the film and the various problems they had with the production including the lack of money and the fact that no one knew how they were going to come up with the special effects. Both Kuran and Short go into great detail about how the attacks were finally made and they want to make sure people remember that you couldn't do this stuff on computers. Editor Mark Goldblatt talks about his job of trying to piece together all this footage that was coming in daily and Corman also adds that it was Goldblatt's great work that really helped make the movie.
