- Detective Robert Goren: I thought a lot about last week.
- Paula Gyson: Oh, you did?
- Detective Robert Goren: About what I said, that everybody lies. It's childish. You're right. The truth is that there are people that I trust.
- Paula Gyson: Anyone in particular come to mind?
- Detective Robert Goren: Yeah, my partner. Yeah, she always has my back.
- Paula Gyson: Tell me a little bit about her.
- Detective Robert Goren: Well, she's a good cop. You know, she's more practical than I am. She's smart... You know, works hard, commands respect...
- Paula Gyson: Okay, I know what she does. What's she like?
- Detective Robert Goren: She grew up here. Her father was a cop, her husband.
- Paula Gyson: Oh, she's married?
- Detective Robert Goren: No. He died in the line of duty before we met.
- Paula Gyson: And she never remarried? How long have you been together?
- Detective Robert Goren: Um... You know, there have been... Breaks. Uh, I guess, like, 11 or 12 years...
- Paula Gyson: How do you feel about her?
- Detective Robert Goren: I told you, I respect her, I admire her. She puts up with my crap, you know? And as you're learning, that's not easy.
- Paula Gyson: Do you love her?
- Detective Robert Goren: What? I... She's... my partner! A profess... I mean, the last thing she would need is for me to hit on her...
- Paula Gyson: No, I didn't ask you what she needs. She's a major relationship in your life. Do you have any romantic feelings for her?
- Detective Robert Goren: No. She's like a sister to me.
- Paula Gyson: Do you have a sister?
- Detective Robert Goren: I have a brother. Now he's gone too.
- Paula Gyson: So she's like a sister? It's important to you that I know that there aren't any romantic possibilities between the two of you, isn't it?
- Detective Robert Goren: I don't get it. I mean, what...? You know... when... A man can't have a working friendship with his partner? I mean, it has to be more than that?
- Paula Gyson: This is not my point. I'm wondering if you think romantic feelings for someone you admire and respect are at odds. Are there any women in your life?
- Detective Robert Goren: The last few years I've been dealing with a lot of loss.
- Paula Gyson: More than your fair share. And before that?
- Detective Robert Goren: I've had... Relationships. It's just that in my work... You know, the hours aren't conducive. You know, a man of my age... Single a long time, you know? All of my problems... It's too late. I mean, that's what you're thinking.
- Paula Gyson: What else am I thinking?... Look, between your work and your affect, you've created an emotional drawbridge that's protected you in many ways. It's a good thing. Do you ever feel lonely?
- Detective Robert Goren: [talking to Dr. Paula Gyson] A man of my age... single a long time... with all of my problems...
- Detective Robert Goren: Could we see your cellar?
- Mason Kent: Sadly no. I need to limit the vibration and movement down there. I'm sure you understand. Carl will show you out.
- Detective Alexandra Eames: A man with something to hide?
- Detective Robert Goren: I think it's my size 13 vibe.
- Detective Robert Goren: You deliberately gave us a flawed confession, knowing that we would catch you in a lie.
- Avery Cullman: So confess to something that I actually did? Okay, I would have to be crazy.
- Detective Robert Goren: Yeah, crazy like a fox.
- Detective Robert Goren: [picking up a glass of wine] May I?
- [tasting the wine]
- Detective Robert Goren: A Brunello di Montalcino?
- Hutton Mays: And?
- Detective Robert Goren: It's nice. It's a bit thin for my taste. I'm more like a Barbaresco kind of guy. You know, a little more umph.
- Hutton Mays: Well, let's just say you don't have a cop's palate.
- Paula Gyson: How long have you been together?
- Detective Robert Goren: Um... You know, there have been... Breaks. Uh, I guess, like, 11 or 12 years?
- Paula Gyson: How do you feel about her?
- Detective Robert Goren: I told you, I respect her, I admire her. She puts up with my crap, you know? And as you're learning, that's not easy.

- Paula Gyson: No, I didn't ask you what she needs. She's a major relationship in your life. Do you have any romantic feelings for her?
- Detective Robert Goren: [emphatically] No. She's like a sister to me.
