A strange gem in a big universe!
C.J.-412 March 2014
This film completely passed my radar and I only came across it by accident. Some well-known actors in a film that draws on the same dead-pan humor and special effects as Red Dwarf.

Kristin Kreuk looks great as usual. Amanda Tapping gives a good performance not too far removed from her character on Star Gate and, as expected, George Takei from Star Trek does a great voice for a very unusual visitor to the space station.

Personally, I liked it. Just don't expect Star Wars - the budget wouldn't have stretched that far. Don't take it seriously and just go along for the ride. It's daft in places - but laugh-out loud in others. Worth a watch!

Dumb movies can be fun.
deloudelouvain23 January 2020
There is no doubt about how stupid this movie is. It all looks like it's made with a very, very limited budget, and the makers clearly don't care at all that it looks like that, in fact it just makes it even better. The whole point of this movie is to have a bit of fun, by making a sci-fi parody, a movie you just can't take too seriously. I'll admit I laughed more than with a "normal" comedy. The monsters, the story, the actors all contributed to it. The cast is only four people, and they all did a good job, especially Billy Boyd that I thought had the funniest character. If you decide to watch this movie just do it with an open mind, get ready for some absurd humor, and just don't expect a high quality science fiction movie. It's a dumb movie but it's fun.

Quirky
Athanatos1736 December 2019
Funny little movie that I stumbled across completely by accident. Although I knew all the actors from previous projects, this film flew completely under my radar. It has some offbeat humor and the cast pulls it off and what could have easily been an unwatchable movie is actually quite good.

Although the entire cast does a good job, Billy Boyd stands out playing the station captain and is outright hilarious as is George Takei for his voice work.

The one strange thing is that from what I have read this film cost about 30 million to make, and I can't quite justify that amount of money based on the sets and effects I saw. Unless the actors were paid an insane amount, something is off with the budget numbers.

Recommended for a light hearted fun time.

Why did they bother
racliff25 June 2016
Kristin Kreuk's resume doesn't have anything we have seen, but Amanda Tapping is well know from the Stargate franchise and lead the cast in Sanctuary, which included Robin Dunne, plus Billy Boyd is best know for the Lord of Rings. Looks like a "B" movie with strong players. While the performances were well within our expectations, my wife said it best with 'Why did they bother making this?'.

The opening scene shows the theft of an undefined piece of technology -- the centerpiece of this end of the world story. But you never get a good feeling why it was invented to begin with. Our blue-collar workers being forced to saved the universe had great flexibility of unexpected story lines, but it's mostly a tiring experience to watch. At times it feels like 4 great performers were invited to do a sketch on the Muppet Show. Sadly "Pigs in Space" is better than Space Milkshake -- a title that never did make any sense to me.

You may wish to watch this to see an additional appearance from Amanda or Billy beyond what we are accustom to seeing, but you'll spend the entire 80mins waiting for the movie to get better -- but it doesn't.

Space shenanigans and rubber duckies
Drive-in_Zeppelin17 February 2015
In the not too distant future we find a crew of menial labor astronauts that crew a giant garbage space-station that is designed to clear debris from the orbital lanes of Earth. Soon after they recover a mysterious dimensional device, the crew discovers all life on Earth has ceased to exist and that they face an even greater crisis when a genetically mutated rubber duck terrorizes the station.

Starring Amanda Tapping, Billy Boyd, Kristin Kreuk and Robin Dunne, Space Milkshake was the perfect ending to an already perfect day of science fiction at the inaugural Other Worlds Austin Sci-Fi festival. George Takei voices the rubber duck named Gary.

I absolutely loved this film and loved that there is still such a thing as a lighthearted sci-fi comedy. It's refreshing to see space humor at the hands of smaller name actors and TV stars too. Sure George Takei is a household name and Billy Boyd was a hobbit, but trust me when I say that it does not cast one shadow on the chemistry between these actors.

Boyd is comically eccentric as the Station's captain and fuels the blue-collar humor with his various quirks and idiosyncrasies. The fact that the film is set on a garbage space station only adds to the humor as the close proximity of the crew results in hilarious and often ridiculous scenarios. Ridiculous is actually the perfect word to describe this film but it's also just plain fun. It reminded me a lot of something like the Red Dwarf series only with more sci- fi references and shenanigans.

George Takei is giant mutated rubber duck, what more could you possibly need to make you want to watch this movie? Its delightful fun for just less than 90 minutes, but it still retains an authentic feel to a futurist space story. The audience (*of sci-fi fans) was absolutely rolling in their seats at the various crew interactions and Billy Boyd's performance. I feel the need to add that asterisk in there just for good measure as your average movie-goer probably isn't going to find a hodgepodge of comedic science fiction very funny.

The humor is probably on the same level as something as Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or the before mentioned Red Dwarf series, but whether you're a dedicated fan of those works or not, you're sure to at least crack a smile in Space Milkshake. Billy Boyd plays the Michael Scott of space albeit with more scenes of him barking orders in his underpants and squaring off with a giant mutated rubber duck.

campy flick
CyMaddux15 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
a bit of a slapstick comedy set in space revolving around a space debris clearing station and its zany crew. Billy Boyd does an admirable job as Captain Anton, who is a cross between Shaun from Shaun of the Dead and Captain Mel from Firefly. Kruek is hot in her little space suit and ads some sex appeal.

I didn't find Tapping to be that great, but she wasn't horrible, about the same for Dunne, who seemed to overact in parts. George Takei added some comedy relief as the voice of Gary, No stellar plot line here, just some slapstick space fun, decent enough for a quasi sci fi comedy.

good home made sci-fi comedy
lokilfa23 February 2015
Enjoyable, pure and really simple. A very decent space comedy with well written characters, slightly above average actors with affordable dialogue, flowing plot and good enough photography. Office life in space and its routine-based timetable coupled with strained relationships and neurotic co-workers is even too credible. Taken for what it's worth and how much it was spent to make it deserves the viewer attention. It's not stellar nor incredibly funny but it would not hurt to see more movies made with this quality rather than boring and pretentious stuff that eventually costs triple this budget for half the entertaining value Space Milkshake can give.

Disappointingly uneven & unfunny; potential unrealized
I_Ailurophile29 August 2022
While filmmaker Armen Evrensel doesn't have a lot of experience under their belt, this is no specific indicator of quality. There's a solid small cast assembled here, the production design and art direction immediately impress, and the practical effects and post-production visual effects look terrific. Above all, the premise seems primed to serve up a delightful farce. It's regrettable, then, that that 'Space milkshake' immediately comes across as having especial difficulty as it tries to find the right tone or stick the landing with its humor. The screenplay too often reaches for very low-hanging fruit: the declination of Captain Anton to put on pants, or his overly abrasive and confrontational personality; the verbal abuse and micromanagement of new crew member Jimmy; very tired, uninspired, and/or sometimes juvenile dialogue and scene writing. The movie also works overtime to build its mystery and a vague air of suspense, but without giving much direction to that element of the storytelling - until, at almost exactly the halfway point, the exposition dump is so overloaded as to threaten our suspension of disbelief. Meanwhile, I've had a hard time getting a firm shake on the performances: sometimes the acting seems exactly on-point, while at other times it seems either overdone or underwhelming; the characters, scene writing, and dialogue that inform the actors' portrayals tend to vary in the same pattern, and I don't know how much of the variance in the performances is a result of the direction, or of the writing.

This is a very mixed bag.

There are good ideas here; it could have been a well-constructed sci-fi comedy romp. Instead it sadly feels too much like Evrensel threw ideas at a wall, and rather than judiciously picking and choosing or organizing he just slapped them all in. As a result the narrative and scene writing becomes specious, and spread too thin, and humor just kind of falls flat. 'Space milkshake' looks and sounds good on a fundamental level, including elements like costume design, hair and makeup work, and set design, and also music and sound effects. Unfortunately, I don't know how much these matter when the feature is so uneven and imbalanced in its storytelling that it fails to provide a meaningful spark of entertainment. I don't actively dislike it, but I also can't quite bring myself to say that I like it; in failing to elicit any major reaction at all, the picture becomes a bit boring. And is there anything worse for a movie to be?

I love the concept, the cast is splendid, and the contributions of those behind the scenes are commendable. Yet the narrative feels overfull, the pacing is rushed, and few if any story beats are approached with particularly mindful care. For as much potential as one may discern as the title begins, the quality of the finished product is scattershot, and it's never truly funny as it could have been. Incredibly, it seems like it's only in the last 15 minutes that the picture is really firing on all cylinders; I suppose it's worth something that it at least ends strong. Honestly, I'm pretty disappointed: 'Space milkshake' could have been a joyful farce, but what we get is just kind of overall bland, with only fleeting tinges of the value we should have gotten all along.

There are far worse ways to spend your time; it's passable, and most recommendable if you're a big fan of someone in the cast. I very much wish I could say that I like it more than I do, yet I'd rather hate a movie than be altogether nonplussed by it, and 'Space milkshake' very much struggles to deliver on its promise. Worth checking out if you come across it, but keep your expectations in check. Best of luck to Evrensel in the future.

If you like the genre, it's pretty good and funny
karen57787 November 2015
There is a new genre out there: science fiction as work place comedy. This is one of the better examples. It puts no effort into logic or sciencetific plausibility. Some of the characters are fairly funny. The acting is professional. I usually find these things either too cloying or silly but this one is pretty decent. If you like it, you should love Interplanetary from 2008 not the blockbuster http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1355575/. I can't see giving this much of a rating considering its mediocrity;it doesn't aspire to more and that is just fine.

This is a line to make the review long enough.

Most Enjoyable
staunton-gary23 November 2019
How could it go wrong with two of the hottest ladies in the universe. Light-hearted fun sci-fi. Well worth the watch. The cast worked well together. Don't expect big budget action, it would have totally spoiled this gem.

I'd rather watch this than The Mandalorian
keenphillip-482-10703719 December 2019
I wasn't expecting much and it was better than I was expecting.

Most of the other reviews cover it's charms and deficits.

If you like programs like Red Dwarf, this is not as good but you will probably enjoy. No brainer entertainment good for a rainy afternoon or to unwind after work.

Funny sci-fi
ijameson10 June 2018
Hey Hollywood,

See this movie? Made on a budget, yet it manages to be better than any of your recent blockbusters.

An interesting idea, interesting characters, and good acting.

It's also funny.

Watch it, take notes, and please try to learn something.

Thanks.

Best "B" movie style sci-fi I've ever seen
ssarkca19 November 2015
I like cheese, the kind you eat, and in movies too. This is one of the best B movie sci-fis i've seen since Spaceballs and Ice Pirates. I think they did it on purpose, because Amanda Tapping was involved and she's high up in my book of quality actresses and producers. It's clever and funny and well worth the watch. The characters are believable and develop well. Kristin Kreuk's character image, after a good plot twist, was awesome, I won't mention that as don't want to give away that. The special effects were fairly decent and the props were very well done, except the space suits, which could have used some work. Adding George Takei was the topping on the cake. He was the cream cheese topping on the cheese LOL. Overall, I gave it a 9. And that's pretty high for a B movie style. Haven't given a 9 for a B movie since The 24th Reich. I'm pretty picky on ratings. I was LOL through the whole thing. Watch it and you'll see. Oh, and don't get the title wrong, sounds like a typical B movie, but titles are just the cover of a good book. Sometimes. Before I wrote this this movie had a 7.2, which is very good in my standards. Watch it, you won't waste your time.

Now THAT is a spoof
fnhstudios9 June 2016
I almost missed this one. Caught this one back around 2014, a late night channel surfing session brought me to this absolute gem! Read the summary and knew there was no way I could not watch this.

It really did seem like everyone had as much fun making it as we all did watching it. I can see where people make the comparisons to early Red Dwarf episodes. Cringing at the jokes and having tears rolling down my face was exactly what I had hoped for, and it was delivered in spades.

Mr. Takei's voice work was a cherry on top of this great project. The whole cast really was amazing. I hope they do make more soon. If you're looking for a fun, B, sci-fi spoof then you have come to the right place! I wish it was on DVD, I would buy cases of them and hand them to everyone that came to my home. Yes I love it that much, and hope you do too. Cheers

Genuinely had way too much fun watching this!
efan7830 January 2022
Robin Dunne and Amanda Tapping off of that Sanctuary, Billy Boyd from LOTR, Kristin Kruek - Lana Lang from Smallville, and some random Gay guy called George Takeaway or something like that as the bad guy.

Sounds good? Well it's schlock Sci-fi with its tongue firmly in its cheek. Evil rubber ducks, running gags, robot bodysnatchers and alternate timeliness. And it's great fun!

Surprisingly entertaining!
Angry_Santa30 March 2020
I wasn't expecting much of this movie, given its overt presentation as a spoof, but it managed to drag me in and keep me entertained for practically the entire duration.

Kristin Kreuk put in a brilliant performance, with Billy Boyd putting in some comic relief. Robin Dunne and Amanda Tapping look like they were both capable of much more, but their roles (particularly Dunne's) were let down by the script. George Takei has really let himself go - obviously needs to change his brand of moisturiser ;-)

Lost and Found
terrysnnet20 December 2023
I found the movie entertaining and was better than Expected! I believe they must not have had a very robust marketing budget as I never heard of this until 11 years after it was made! And that seems strange considering the cast which I would assume calls for a decent salary, or perhaps that's why and they ran out of money after paying them off ? The title of the movie does not do much either and I question their decision on it! The movie itself moves along quite well and kept my attention, it's script is just ok and though it has a humorous element it is not well defined and goes from what seems serious to just plain silly in the blink of an eye! I am guessing the budget is to blame here too as this movie could have been much better with just a bit of refinement! Though I may be a bit generous on the 9/10 rating , it's because of the effort that appears to have been given on what I heard was around a 300,000 dollar budget! I'm not sure what they made off of it ? For me I would have thought the actors and staff involved would have cost as much or more than the whole movie did!

rubber ducky your the one
godinamachine10 December 2021
HEY EVERYBODY ITS ME, (4) and today we review " my space milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" the movie !!!

This is one of those diamonds you find in the heaps and piles of dog poop....... not that i go digging through poop hoping to find rare gems often .... but i have had some low points in my life .... dont judge me !!!!!!!!

This film is obviously not a low budget indie film, it might be considered that but im talking this one had something behind it, the cast had a couple of names in it though it only had minimal cast so that saves .......but the sets looked good also minimal setting so ....also saves .... the only real lacking department was CGI ...BUT even that was better than most you see even now days and this was what in 2012 ?????so yea this film is well above par ........ especially for a scifi ......usually you get some bottom of the space barrel trash from indie sci fi THUS me saying they had to have had some people behind them .........and thats fine ...so im saying this ones mid level .......

over all its a solid film it has great just about everything involved , on the technical side its all good .... from the entertainment side its great ..... the FX are solid as it gets ...and the monster was a great design aswell .... actually reminded me of one of my favorite monsters of all time the creature from "metamorphosis the alien factor" (the sequel to "the deadly spawn") both great films ... but the monster here is VERY alike .... except ...part rubber duck ...and the sounds it makes when getting hit are perfect .... good job, they are just enough you hear them but not so much its annoying ..... good mix/master job on sound there .....

i wish i could make fun of this one ... but as per usual if its a fun / good film that does it job .... i really cant ...so

9/10 - it entertains.

Surprize! A great budget movie
dagallop6 September 2021
Frankly I have no idea how I missed this one! I only just watched this and it's nearly ten years old! Oh my!

Great 'chill out' and take it "as is" fun! Good acting and so happy to hear the voice of George Takei as the 'bad guy'! I have been a Trekkie for ever and so hearing George just killing it in this was one step short of wonderful!

Not wanting to give George Takei all of the credit, this whole thing was exceptionally well acted and entertaining. The sets, special effects and frills reflected the budget but it really didn't matter, they made it superfluous to the movie! Although, since they went to the trouble of generating some displays such as the decaying orbit one, they could at least have done more than simply 'rewind' the first one! (hence the 8!).

Definitely would recommend this as long as folks know it was a movie-on-a-budget so be ready for that, watch it for the story and the acting, you really don't need anything else and frankly it actually makes it more fun to watch!

Really fun late-night movie
skyyzzamm21 October 2022
This IS a gem. A total B movie but really fun and funny. Billy Boyd leads it for that extra kick and the writer has a great sense of humor. Very unexpected.

The title immediately points to something that should give you the trots but wow I had a good time at 2 am. Methinks you will too. Great with a nice Dagwood so make yourself something and have some fun... I expected a p.o.s. But after 5 minutes of watching it at 90-degree angle I was propped. Doofus and fun.

BTW readers, these are genuine reviews for a change. Ever see 8/10 to 10/10 reviews for s**t movies and wonder? The production is paying crew $50 to leave false positives. Enjoy this one, glad they made it.

Highly Underrated Space Comedy
StuOz24 March 2022
Four blue collar astronauts encounter an alien being.

It is highly unusual for me to like, and review, a film like this. I normally avoid this sort of humour (it resembles The Orville TV series) but for whatever reasons I had the time of my life with this flick?? And I have returned to it with repeat viewings.

I love all the characters, and despite being a Trekker, I actually like George Takei more in this than in Star Trek!

Despite all the money that went into the 1999 to 2019 Star Wars movies, I can say without question that the very low budget Space Milkshake is more entertaining than all of those movies put together! Wow!

I can't speak highly enough about this movie. The only question is - why is this film not more talked about??
