Theonlydev27 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Velu (Vijay) is a village milkman who stays with his widowed mother, a beautiful sister Kaveri(Saranya Mohan) and a cute Murai Ponnu Vaidhiyalakshmi (Hansikha). He is liked by one and all in the village. He loves to help the needy.

Genelia D'Souza is a TV reporter who comes to village to do coverage of her viewers where she happens to fall in love with Vijay.

Genelia was earlier harassed by the misdeeds of Villain Abhimanyu Singh. He is the most influential person in the city and an underworld mafia don. One fine day Genelia happens to witness an accident where bunch of goons die. She uses this incident and she creates a fictional character 'Velayutham'. When Vijay visits Chennai there are few bomb blasts planned but he prevents all the bomb blasts without his knowledge. So people start to think that he is Velayutham.

Genelia meets Vijay & tells him about the fictional character & Villain. Vijay initially hesitates to continue this fictional character but it so happens that he continues this character to panel the evil minds and save his villagers.

And rest of the film speaks about how Vijay takes over villain and his gang.

PERFORMANCE:

Vijay has entertained all classes of the audience who has followed the success path of the Kollywood Superstar Rajinikanth. Vijay too has set his own style to entertain the fan club. His style steals millions of hearts.

Hansika creates an impact on the audience.

Genelia gives a neat image of next door girl.

Santhanam's comedy is another highlight of the movie.

Saranya Mohan as sister to Vijay has done justice to her character giving a neat performance from her part.

Shayali Shinde comes as a Villain.

The film also has MS Bhaskar, Sathyan, Illavarasu, Vincent Ashokan and Raaghav playing their roles perfectly.

Vijay Anthony tops the musical charts.

VT Vijayan's editing plays a major part in the film.

Priyan's camera showed different angels on the big screen.

Director Jayam Raja who is famous for successful remakes can now go for any number of big remakes with more Kollywood stars.

COMMENTS:

Velayutham a full length action mass entertainer promises to take Vijay's career to another level of stardom.

Vijay fan review
roubenmanika26 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Vijay Performance SUPEEEER 'ma !!!! Climax MINDBLOWING except when the little girl scream in the crowd ! i think its ridiculous and Director Raja could think a better idea ! anyway it's another SUPER HIT FOR THALAPATHY ! AND : a little request as a fan of THALAPATHY : Please don't do the stupid scenes like girl who screaming or a "feeling scene" in between a fight scene (i mean when Velayutham save all the girls and talk to the little girl at the end of the fight) it waste the scene in that case ! Santhanam comedy is excellent too !!! The shot (15-20sec) when vijay cry for his sister is MINDBLOWING !!! i saw a NEW VIJAY !!! Harbour fight sequence excellent ! otherwise Hats off to the all team of VELAYUTHAM !!! again VIJAY performance is Excellent !

Velayudham - Vijay carries it on his shoulders
sundarvik6 November 2011
First of all I want to say that velayudham is not only for Vijay Fans to watch. Its a good family entertainer.Direct M.Raja always good at directing movies with huge star cast .yet again he as done it in "Velayudham"

The cast includes "Vijay" ,Hanshika,Genilia,Santhanam,Shayaji shinde.....the list goes on.The movie is a great ride for those who like the humor.Having Santhanam leading the troop there are totally 30 comedy actors who shared screen space with him.

Story: The crux of the story revolves around Bharathi(Genelia),is a genuine reporter who want to the baddies to be punished. In the process she creates a fictional character(Super Hero) named "Velayudham".In the Village ,Velayudham(Vijay) and her sister Kavery(Saranya Mohan) makes chaos in the Villages by playing pranks on the people.

Later Vijay comes to chennai to collect the money which he invested in chit fund for her sister's Marriage.Vijay unknowingly saves people from danger and people think it is the fictional character(Velayudham) who does it.At a later point of time Genailia explains Vijay about the fictional character "Velayudham" and how people are trusting him as superhero. She also request him to continue beating the baddies.

Did Vijay accept it?.Did Velayudham punishes all the baddies ..forms the rest of the story.

Performances:

Vijay has done a phenomenal job. This is what he is so good at..entertaining people.Let it be his dance or comical sequences with santhanam.he has simply rocked in all the departments.

Genelia has done a fair job considering her space in the movie.

Its difficult to believe Hanshika as village girl but she has tried her hand in the comedy which has come out good.

Santhanam has an unsuccessful thief ,tickles the ribs in every scene. His combination with Vijay works out pretty well

Even though the film as a huge Star cast ..Raja has brought the best out of every body in the silver screen.

Music: Songs are the huge plus for Velayudham.all the songs were chart busters even before the release of the movie.Chilax being the mass hit of the all.All the songs were refreshing and different.Re-Recording and music takes velayudham to the next level.

Screen Play: The movie has a good screenplay but it had have been even more racy if some action sequences got trimmed. The Train stunt sequence was excellent. At the end of the sequence it gives the feeling the movie got over but the movie still continues after it.Mind you its run time is 3 hour 20 minutes if I am not wrong.but the clever thing about the director is to bring back santhanam for the village sequence so the audience never felt bored.Raja managed to keep the audience through out.Another good thing about the movie is not revealing the true identity of Velayudham even at end of the movie

Dialogues: Dialogues by Subha is one of the pluses for the Velayudham. all the dialogues were short and meaningful. The lengthier one should be the one in Climax where he speaks to the public.Considering the message the length seems a valid one.

Conclusion: Logic is something you have to forget while u watching commercial movie.Velayudham is no exception but Raja packaged it very neatly with a good presentation thus making it a enjoyable movie.Overall a great family entertainer and right movie for the festive mood

DIWALI'S Surprise WINNER!!!!!!!
123kal12313 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Prior to this movie's release a lot of people wrote vijay off claiming that surya had overtaken vijay in terms of star power. Well i do not think those words will ever be uttered again in a long long time. I went for this movie a week after watching 7am arivu(English meaning 7th nonsense) yes, i needed some time to recover from it. I had no expectations but by the end of the movie i was surprised by how much the movie entertained me. I think this was Vj's best since ghilli. He looked like he enjoyed making the movie. Everything was in it's place, the songs, the jokes, the fights(do not worry laws of gravity are respected). Amongst the female leads, Genelia had the role which drives the plot forward the other one was their only for eye candy and the sister did her part well.Among the action scenes the train part certainly catches the eye and the climax in the stadium was certainly better than i expected it to be. The movie will not win awards or stay with you after its viewing but it will entertain you.Give it a try and chillax, it might surprise you.

All-in-all mass entertainment
psjanakiramani26 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Well what can you expect from Vijay movies - sister sentiments, group dances, violent fights ... As an ardent Vijay (must say erstwhile) fan, I decided to watch this on 1st day 1st show. Movie is well-paced, songs are forgettable, good comedy track, Hansika is good-looking while they killed Genelia's costume esp. on 'Mulachu Moonu' song - just does not suit her bod! Vijay's effort to show his six-pack (?!?!) in the climax is futile. I miss romantic Vijay though - gone are those days I guess. I somehow liked the climax - an effort to show that courage is not always hero's trait but lies with every individual - apt for any Indian cinema though.

A Deepavali Treat !!!!!!
kimian26 October 2011
Vijay is back to what he does best; mass entertainers, and what better time to unveil a mass entertainer than Diwali. With the music already a rage, the excitement was palpable as fans headed in droves to theatres on the festival of lights.

Raja has done a fine job of mixing all the elements that go towards making a mass hero film, though he has lost the balance a bit in the last hour. His adeptness at placing comedy, romance, sentiment and the mandatory 5 songs into a script that has an alter-ego(istic) superhero should be commended. Nothing looks out of place, as we enjoy Santhanam's wisecracks, Vijay's dances and the brother-sister sequences. It is a while since we have seen Vijay excel in an emotionally heavy scene, Raja gets it out of the actor, in Velayudham. Also, placing 5 songs in a movie with none of them sticking out like a sore thumb is quite an achievement; though we should say that Vijay's presence is a major factor in ensuring this.

Everyone in front of the camera has done a fine job. Vijay is sprightly, energetic and every bit the way we love to see him. He has experimented a bit with his look in the songs and they have come out well. Hansika is there in many scenes, but for most parts is a silent spectator, being called upon once in a while, mostly for glamour. She does not look out of place as a village girl, but the makers' claim that she would remind us of Khushboo is an overstatement. Genelia gets quite a significant part and looks convincing. A laugh is guaranteed every time Santhanam is on screen. Saranya Mohan too deserves a round of applause for being good enough to make the audience feel the depth of the siblings' bond.

A racy entertainer this Deepavali season. A right choice for the festival mood. Enjoy with Your Family !!!!

Astounding Comeback
kannan_fifa7 November 2011
Velayudham – 7/10 – Velayudham certainly halts the continuous falling streak of Vijay in recent years and announces a big comeback for the actor. With a premise adapted from a telugu film, 'Azad', Jeyam Raja (who is famous for adapting successful films to Tamil) have once again proved his forte in it with an entertaining fare, Velayudham. Velayudham is not an experimental film with pretentious plot but first of all it also did not promise to offer one. It contains a story which is tested many times but what makes it sparkle, is the way it is being presented. Vijay delivers a well-balanced performance after a long time and walks away with applause in every frame as he enhances them with amazing amount of energy and freshness.

Despite taking a commercial route, Raja did not deviate too much from logic and tries to inject fair amount of intelligence too and of course a thoughtful message at the end. Most importantly unlike previous ventures of Vijay, Valyudham does not over exaggerate too much in the name of glorifying, at any parts. He shows maturity having able to handle a sensitive subject and direct scenes with almost 50 experienced artistes in once scene. No doubt it is a big step for him to step into the leagues of biggies of Koolywood.

Performance wise, all of them do their role well and stands just behind Vijay is Genilia with a matured makeover and in the other end Haniska over emotes at many instances.

Technically the film is quite competent. Priyan's cinematography needs a special mention which enhances the Super Hero theme very well. Vijay Anthony's tune might not be so innovative but satisfies the audiences especially Vijay's fans. Out of all, 'Chillax' stands out the most while 'Mayam Seidayo' is a visual treat.

In Overall, Velayudham is not a landmark film in Kollywood but has all the ingredients to entertain the audience which is what expected from Vijay.

The Usual Vijay stuff
jimmy_nx29 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
There is nothing much to talk about this movie, as its the usual stuff that we expect from a vijay movie. The movie had few good moments but it is not enough to save this mess. As for the vijay fans this might be an appealing film but for the rest its just another vijay movie. The major drawback of the film is that, it never offers much and neither deliver. The film lacks to draw the viewers attention throughout,as the viewer could guess whats going to come up in each and every moment. The climax turned into a mess, reminding us of other movies in the same genre(ie, fighting against corruption). Totally its a disappointing film.

Velayudham-Roller coaster ride!
prashandh00726 October 2011
saw the movie first show at AGS-chennai at 6.15 am..vi jay has proved his metal again..after the huge success of kaavalan...thalapathy has given yet another mass entertainer..first half was a roller coaster ride with vi jay-santhanam&co combo scenes..the story moves very fast showing the relationship between saranaya(sister) and vi jay.thanks to Vijay's own incredible comic sense. After a long while, you see not the star Vijay, but a genuinely affectionate brother who wants to get his sister married well. His antics, together with those of Speedu (Santhanam) set the audiences rolling right away. It's this Vijay that you've missed, for so long.second half shows how vi jay turns in to super hero VELAYUDHAM to save people.stunts has shaped up pretty decently.vi jay has did some homework for fight seqs which can be witnessed from the stunts.pass mark to screenplay because all the scenes follows the order with logics behind it.special mention about a particular scene post intermission when saranya dies,vi jay has performed extremely well and gets applause from the audience as well.coming to the climax which is very different from other vi jay movies says a social message to the people which has been done beautifully by vi jay.on casts genelia has not given her 100% and hansika has done her part well with her bubbly appearance. On the whole, people who still doubt whether vi jay can give mass entertainer onddate in his own style, here is the answer in form of VELAYUDHAM which had everything to be declared as MASS HIT!!!!

An interesting movie
umamakesh112 November 2011
The story contains a typical essence of Vijay's movies. But M.Raja has a technique to make people sit on their seats and make them not move their eyes of the screen.

Yes, the movie is good to watch and the story is also nice. I don't know why, but this movie reminded me of the popular video game "Prince of Persia".

Genilia plays a vital role and appears to be her best performance yet. I have no idea why Hanshika was casted in this movie. She has no connection to the story what-so-ever, except for glamor. Saranya Murugan's role is to be acclaimed. Santhanam does have a good role to play. As I said, hats off to M.Raja for casting. But he could haver thought twice about Hanshika.

Overall, the movie is thrill/action/comedy/romance packed journey. Guaranteed entertainment. My rating is 7/10.

Velayudham – A Wasted Weapon
chanrockz28 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Velayudham is inspired (almost a remake) of Telugu movie Azad (2000). Incidentally Nagarjuna starred Azad was inspired by 1989 Amitabh flick, Main Azad Hoon. The inspiration doesn't stop there. Main Azad Hoon takes the story line from 1941 Frank Capra classic, Meet John Doe. What do you reckon? An Amitabh Bachchan film taking so much time to come to Tamil movies. I will give you a special trivia at the end.

The biggest problem of Velayudham is the stark difference between the two halves. You will hate the second as much as you love the first one. After a very long time, you can see Vijay in his own comic self and with Saranya Mohan for company and they create ruckus on screen. The build up to the arrival of Velayudham is carefully done but what hurts the movie is the lack of sustenance in pace. Unwanted songs at wrong moments in the movie, needless love track between Genelia and Vijay and even more the silly cat fight track between Hansika and Genelia. The CGI work is pedestrian, camera work by Priyan passes through and could have used VT Vijayan's editing in the second half. Vijay Antony's songs are amateurish except for the lovely tune of Mulachu Moonu ilaye. It would be great if he stays away from singing, the opening song was crappy. Hansika doesn't have much to do except for her hip line shows (boy, she has become sexier, hasn't she?) and Genelia doesn't even remotely look like strong headed journalist. Sandhanam is an unexpected dud.

Initially, I thought Raja has taken an original plot but he chose to do a remake this time too. Usually his xerox machines works very fine but somehow he tried the formulaic second half that wrecked the movie, very badly. This time around he has xeroxed a few more things like the attire and jumping sequences from Assassin's Creed (Ubisoft is planning to sue them), Tron setting for the Maayam Seidhayo song and some more Hollywood movies for his fight sequences. Raja fails miserably in translating the persona of Vijay on to the screen. The bad screenplay and the lingering confusion on how to move the story is evident in the second half. Horrible casting of the villain roles is one another reason for the bad show. Thankfully Vijay doesn't have any punch dialogues (except for one) to mouth but even the tiny little characters give out punch dialogues in random. We all know that Velayudham is mass masala flick but it's doesn't sustain your interest till the last. The directors don't understand the fact that people want interesting movies and not combo offer of songs and fights. What could have been a perfect mass masala entertainer becomes just another fizzled out cracker from Vijay's stable. Can we have a Velayudham to stop such directors?

Go and enjoy with your family - a real cracker of Diwali
solomonnow29 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
A milkman becomes super hero(so no more Logic's) to fight against terrorism and corruption. Even though it is a old type story which wall well known to Tamil cinema, director M.Raja penned with interesting screenplay. Vijay - Acted very well. Still he is the only hero who can do the script of Super hero doing goodness to people.. No one dare to touch this script in 2011. Vijay entertains his million of fans without anyone disappointment. Genilia is for acting and Hanshika for Chillax and Saranya Mohan for sentiment. More supporting actors(Shyaji Shinde, Pandiyarajan etc) and comedians(Santhanam, Manohar, Singamuthu etc) becomes the pillar of entertainment. dialogs from Subah plays vital role in the film. Vijay Antony's background tracks keeps the movie on edge even it inspired from assassins and Agneepath soundtracks. editor VT.Vijayan done his best but even it would be better when the length of second part is reduced. Even though few graphics scenes are worse but from 45crores it is great. Finally it is class mass entertainment and creates festive mood to his fan to celebrate.

The film is as usual Masala Flick Nothing new..
bekarthieee28 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Velayudham is a fictional do-good created by Bharathi (Genelia), a freelance journalist to fight the terrorists, who are trying create problems in Chennai. She creates the character when her friends' killers end up in a freak accident. On the other hand, Velayudham (Vijay), a milkman from a small village comes to Chennai along with his sister (Saranya Mohan), Uncle (MS Bhaskar) and fiancée (Hansika Motwani) to get his hard earned money from a chit fund he invested in. Without his knowledge, he does a few accidental heroics leading to people believing him as the do-gooder Velayudham. Realising the folly, Bharathi confronts him and asks him to take the mantle of eradicating the baddies. He initially wades off but when he sees that his money looted by the chit fund owners, he becomes the Velayudham that every one wants. The story of how Velayudham and Bharathi team up to expose the real culprits and stop the terrorists is told in the terrible second half of the movie.

Velayudham is mass masala flick but it's doesn't sustain your interest till the last. The directors don't understand the fact that people want interesting movies and not combo offer of songs and fights. What could have been a perfect mass masala entertainer becomes just another fizzled out cracker from Vijay's stable.Vijay is flying like spider man and jumping like he has power. But he doesn't have any power and most of the stunts are unbelievable....It always happens to those who doesn't like to risk in acting and keep thinking of same masala concept.

Velayudham - a good one by Vijay
bull_dog00628 October 2011
Velayudham is a definitely a good try by Raja. Way Raja has transformed Vijay from a Milk man to a super hero trying to protect people is really done well. Raja could have tried to give a better definition for the Villains.

Vijay's usual formula: "People coming to watch a movie should just enjoy the 2.5 hours without thinking too much. Come.... Watch... Enjoy and Go.... No Brain teasers", worked very well for him.... This movie has also done its part.... Already producer Ravichandran has confirmed movie is a smash hit all over the world.

Vijay's performance was really good in the movie. Vijay continue entertaining the fans like you do always. Waiting to watch your upcoming movies Nanban and one with ARM. Velayudham is a movie worth watching.

A movie from India for India
george-4228316 November 2015
The movie is 100% Indian, with all that presumes Indian movies... The action and effects very poor, a lot of music and good reviews only from India :) This is not right. Also not right to vote in every internet site all movies from India. A lot of stars for nothing in last reviews. My proposal for IMDb is to forbid all votes from country of origin of the movie, only outsiders can vote. In this way, we don't have high ratings for lame movies. Also good movies are rated low. There is a fix for this. Of course the IMDb ask for 10 lines of comments for a crappy movie, but what can i say after almost 20 minutes of movie? Terrible! and not Terrible good...but terrible bad. Probably they vote because of actors that make the girls sing :)) Sorry folks, for me is a ZERO.

Great

Awesome movie.... Vijay the real mass...

Vijay and Raja team up to give an unpretentious entertainer. It is a good movie to see relish and enjoy. Vijay at his best, it has everything to appease movie -buffs On the downside, the film is far too long, especially the second half. Shorter in length, one song sacrificed, its action scenes trimmed, Velayudham would have been crisp. But still it is a perfect outing with family, if you are looking for time pass entertainment.

Velayudham is all about a common man who puts on a super-hero mask to vanish the evil in the society. The first half of the film is racy, engaging the audiences with interesting comedy and thrilling elements. On the flip side, the pace of the second half drops and the story moves in a routine formulaic way. Nevertheless, Vijay holds your attention all the way with his stylish attire, dances and action.

Perfect family entertainer for the festive season. Warning: Spoilers
"Velayudham" has nothing much new in it , not much detailing have gone into its making ,no research whatsoever , the actors have not strained much, except the front-line actors others are largely unknown, BUT the movie clicks with the audience because whatever is needed for a movie to be entertaining is aptly mixed & presented tastefully.

Problem has never been with Vijay , he has always done his part well in most of his movies , even in those string of flops he had in the recent past , the problem was always with the screenplay which was not quiet engaging. That inadequacy has been taken care off well by M.Raja in "Velayudham".

First half is quiet hilarious with Vijay & Shanthanam combing well to tickle our funny bones. Shanthanam has once again proved that he is here to stay , it's just that he needs good writers & directors to tap his potential. With its songs , romance , action blocks , comedy & sentiment first half almost zips past like that before even you take notice. Though its one & half hours length , one can hardly notice it. Second half picks up the pace further with couple of speed breaks in the form of songs but the scripts moves towards all out action. May one action block too many but not tiring all the same as his previous movies which did not do well.

Vijay as always rocks in his familiar territory with his elegant footwork be it in dance or the action sequences. Comedy comes natural to him & he has acted well in emotional sequences too in this movie.

Genelia has lots of scope to perform & she has utilized it well. Hansika is eye candy & that's about her. It is a bit difficult for one to focus on anyone else when she is on screen though! Saranya reprises her oft repeated goody goody sister act one more time.

Shanthanam is another asset for the movie. With his witty one-liners & awesome timing he brings down the roof.

Priyan's cinematography is supportive to the script. He has captured the landscape of Kashmir well in the "Molachu moonu " song.

V.T.Vijayan's editing is pacey where it needs to be & steady where it has to be. Suba's dialogs are razor sharp with regular dose of larger than life hero eulogizing ones thrown here & there in between.

Vijay Anthony's songs are already a hit. "Maayam seidhayo" & "Molachu moonu" are delightful melodies while "Chillax" is a rocking dance number. Back ground score is also adequate .

M.Raja has once again proved that he is a producer's delight when it comes to churning out hits & getting money back. Who cares if he is doing so with help of a original hit or an inspired one as long as everyone is happy.

On the whole , "Velayutham" may not be a perfect film or an "informative" film or a "BIG" film , it sure does satisfies one's craving for entertainment.

Bottomline : Perfect family entertainer for the festive season.

Average Movie
getkishore30 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Velayudham is a average usual Vijay flick, which has the same boring elements. The movie is a remake of Telugu movie called AZAD which was released in 2002. It has also been copied from the world's popular video game - Assassins Creed. Director Raja is known for remakes, and yes, he has excelled in remaking the exact from the Telugu original. There is nothing new with the story, nothing new in screenplay, nothing new in characterization !. Same old usual Tamil commercial movie with no real elements !

Overall, Velayudham is a movie that will entertain you only if you are a vijay fan. The movie's editing is so bad that at one point, you will feel that the movie has ended, but actually, it continues !

My review of velayudham is genuine and correct in my opinion ! Rating - 3.5/10 !!

Velayudham - A Cracker of a Diwali
arvind-krishnamoorthy92028 October 2011
After huge expectation when the songs have already topped the charts , the wait is finally over for all our fans. Velayudham - The ultimate weapon fired all cylinders and was fully loaded with all the ingredients required for a mass commercial movie and thoroughly satisfied the expectation of every fan who were eagerly waiting for the result. There are many scenes in the movie where your adrenaline rushes, heart pumps and finally you end up with dry throat screaming at your maximum possible decibel level.

Highlights :

Vijay carries the entire movie on his shoulders. He serves as the messiah for poor, general public and his character has been perfectly sketched and he has been fed with a neat and a mass script which demands for his image.

Songs have been perfectly placed and beautifully captured, opening song was a treat to watch, beautiful colors and was a perfect start to a fast paced movie.

All the artists have done justice to their role and i actually lost count on the number of artists who have appeared.

Stunts need to mentioned here, beautifully choreographed by stunt Silva and Arasu, each and every punch was breathtaking.

Director Raja has been underestimated by all of us, he proved all of us wrong and gave a perfect mass commercial movie which can be enjoyed by all sections of people and also keeping the family audience in mind.

The two pretty ladies, in fact three including Saranya Mohan, they have done their part and also gave their best which is required for the script. Hansika with her cute expressions and innocent behavior and with her glamor quotient makes the audience spell bound, Genelia as a press reporter a much serious role and also an important part of the movie has done her role very well.

Verdict: Velayudham - 1000 gems in the sky

Good Entertainer
Rajesh-Narayanan0110 December 2011
Instead of focusing on "punch" dialogues and simple "hero kills villain" kind of story, there is a good amount of emphasis laid on the pseudo heroine as well.

Director has taken it up to cover most of the silly mistakes that happen in Tamil movies. Screenplay is fast paced and when the action gets to a high we have a nice number or comedy scene to take the heat off.

Vijay dons the role of a happy-go-lucky, sister loving, girlfriend fearing, charming village milkman during the first half. In the second he is the action packed superhero Velayudham. This movie definitely suits his style and I guess he has been quite comfortable in blending into the character.

Genelia has played her part with a lot of confidence. Hansika plays more of a third fiddle throughout the film - her presence is probably more for glamour (probably her character itself was an afterthought).

Saranya was a really good pick. She plays the chirpy sister role with gusto and makes her presence count.

The songs of the movie are already a big hit. In general the songs appeal to most of the audience. Santhanam has done a good job in the comedy role and even small time comedians and veterans who play short roles have chipped in nicely. As an afterthought I will say there are too many comedians in this movie.

Overall this movie is a good entertainer. Worth watching with family or friends.

Velayudham Review – Mindless Mayhem
erian-rajkumar1803 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
On the unenviable lines of his past monster-pieces Tirupachi, Madurey, Villu, Sura and Vettaikkaran, Vijay has taken Tamil Cinema eight steps backward this Diwali with Velayudham.

Diving into the Telugu Cesspoo: As if there were no more sophomoric drivel left in Tamil Cinema and all combinations of puerile junk had been exhausted, M. Raja dives into the cesspool of Telugu cinema by shamelessly stealing (or borrowing, if he has bought the rights) this fiendish plot from Azad, a 11-year-old movie starring Nagarjuna and Shilpa Shetty. With minor changes from Azad, the storyline of Velayudham goes like this…In a plot that resembles Vijayakanth's movies, Tamil Nadu's Home Minister is in cahoots with Jihadi Terrorists who wish to destabilize India by bombing Chennai. Yeah right! Even terrorists are bored of bombing the same old Mumbai or Delhi.

Bharati (Genelia), a journalist and her two male colleagues launch a crusade against the evils plaguing society.A sting operation goes awry, both her colleagues are killed and Bharati too has a close shave with death. The stupid thugs who killed them blow themselves up accidentally put not before giving a vaakumoolam (confession) to Bharati that they were involved in the previous bombing and another one is coming next week. Bharati has a brainwave, conjures up a fictitious character called Velayudham, writes a note signed by Velayudham warning all criminals that he was responsible for killing the thugs and he would stop the next terror plot.

Meanwhile, a village milkman, Velayudham (Vijay in a never before seen role), his sister Kaveri (Saranya Mohan) and a bunch of cronies come to Chennai to collect the money he had invested in a chit fund company.

Velayudham ends up accidentally and unknowingly saving the public from the terror attacks while still staying unknown to the public. As usual, the stupid Tamil people start believing the existence of Velayudham just as they believed in the Indian Thatha, Kandasamy and Anniyan. Once this news reaches Bharati, she solicits the real Velayudham to continue to play the fictitious one but he declines.

However when the chit fund company turns out to be a fraud and he loses all his money Velayudham, the milkman has a change of heart and Velayudham, the crusader is born.

The rest of the story is about how he foils all the terror plots and saves the people of Tamil Nadu.

With eyes like a tiger, lion like ferocity, legs like Cheetah and a body like Bruce Lee, what chance do the bad guys really have?

The screenplay is typical of Vijay films – forced songs, loads of fist fights, Thangachi (sister) sentiment, unrelated comedy track, preachy, people extolling the hero's virtues and topped off with a political tinge.

M. Raja tests the patience of the audience when describing the paasamalar (loving) relationship of the Anna – Thangachi duo and their playful pranks on the villagers in flashbacks coming one after the other in rapid succession making you want to pull the hair off your head i.e. making the audience a Mayira pudungi (a Tamil cuss word). It would not be a sin to leave this section blank as new words need to be invented to describe performances in Vijay movies. However, I'll try to be kind.

Vijay is a perfect fit for this role as it does not require great skills (besides Vijay doesn't have much to boast of anyway). However, he looks physically fit – has a shirtless fight scene in the climax that would make Salman Khan cringe.

Vijay also continues to excel in his Kakavalippu (epileptic seizure) dance moves. He seemed to have put some effort into a scene where he is required to cry.

Velayudham is a usual Vijay film for the hardcore Vijay fans
kumarankulam7 February 2021
After continuously working with his brother Jayam Ravi, Mohan Raja seems to change track with this pure Vijay film. Well, Vijay who was in a dark phase for a while has taste moderate success in Kaavalan and is still searching for a strong comeback film to revive his career. Unfortunately, Velayudham doesn't seem to be a turning point film for Vijay because it's, again and again, the same Vijay template film. Velayudham is a rehashed version of Vijay's earlier film Thirupaachi. We have the same sister sentiment and a larger-than-life superhero Vijay who is fighting the bad guys. Well, in Thirupaachi, he fought for his sister's life whereas, in Velayudham, he is fighting for the people. Vijay plays the similar superhero role that he is doing since his Thirumalai days. He is lifting the film with his effortless performance. We don't need Soori nor Santhanam in the comedy scenes because Vijay scores brilliantly in them. He brings us tears in the emotional scenes whereas he gives us goosebumps in the action scenes. Velayudham is watchable only for the entertaining Vijay factor. Other than him, we don't have any strong supporting actors lifting the film. I will say Genelia has a slightly interesting role which has turned into a cliche role later in the narrative. Mohan Raja who is known for making properly packaged commercial entertainers has once again proved his skills in it but Velayudham doesn't seem to be an interesting film at all. We don't have any refreshing elements except the social message factor in the climax. Vijay cannot change track with Velayudham because it doesn't have anything different from his usual films. Mohan Raja seemingly packaged Velayudham to satisfy Vijay's fans and the family audience. Vijay Anthony's background score elevates Vijay's screen presence and it adds the much-needed heroism to his character. The song placements don't help the film at all because it slows down the intense pace of the overall narrative. There are so many illogical scenes that we can't care about in a Vijay film. Mohan Raja has done justice to Vijay's larger-than-life star image but he couldn't make a much interesting film. The lack of originality in the content seems to not work in favor of the film. Even the entertaining first half seems to not have any focus on the plot. One thing is guaranteed in Velayudham. The engagement factor won't let you down in the film. The film keeps us awaken with its strong fan moments and thrilling plot points towards the climax. Overall, Velayudham is a usual Vijay film for the hardcore Vijay fans.

Also they tried to give movie like "Anniyan -did by Vikram".. and its obvious in movie when vijay coming as mask man velayudham..

Its usual tamil cinema commercial movie ..

Nothing new in it..
