What happened to Kristen Stewart? And the “Belfast” boys? Ditto Aunjanue Ellis. Wednesday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were full of chaos, surprises and big snubs. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down the film side of things along with the BAFTA longlists, which were also unveiled Wednesday. (Click here for our TV nominations analysis.)
The biggest shocker, of course, was Stewart’s omission from the actress lineup. The “Spencer” star had been the season-long frontrunner to take home the Best Actress Oscar, and while some of us didn’t think she’d win the SAG Award, a nomination was expected. Instead, she’s Awol. We all knew “Spencer” was polarizing, but did we underestimate just how polarizing it is? Coupled with its poor showing on the BAFTA longlist — just four citations — it was not a great day for Team “Spencer.

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

Jidai-geki, chanbara or simply samurai films are probably those that gave Japanese cinema the place it occupies even now in world cinema, with the entries of Akira Kurosawa, Kihachi Okamoto, Masaki Kobayashi and many others being included among the best films of all time. However, and with few exceptions, the majority of international audience are not particularly aware of the entries in the genre that were produced after 2000. This list aims to fill this gap with 25 five great movies presented in chronological order, that cover the whole spectrum of the category, from cult and splatter to arthouse and anime and everything between.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post).
This past weekend saw the release of Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs,” a movie that was inspired by classic Japanese cinema (even if some feel that it may ultimately have been more informed by its director’s personal worldview).
The film is littered with references to revered old masters like Akira Kurosawa, Seijun Suzuki, etc., but movie-lovers the world over may be much less familiar with the more recent history of Japanese cinema.
This week’s question: What is the best Japanese film of the 21st century?

The film is helmed by critically acclaimed and prolific cult director Takaski Miike. Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

On Fox's Friday comedy "Enlisted," Chris Lowell plays Cpl. Derrick Hill, the middle brother of three -- Geoff Stults plays the oldest brother, Pete; and Parker Young plays baby brother Randy -- all stationed at the same Army base in Florida.
Luckily for show creator Kevin Biegel, both brotherly love and sibling rivalry broke out almost immediately.
"Kevin had this pipe dream of what he wanted the chemistry to look like," Lowell, decked out in full fatigues on the show's Los Angeles set, tells Zap2it. "He created these archetypes that he was hoping these actors would fall into, and then when the three of us first got together, it was just frightening how quickly we just adopted those roles.
"We quickly transcended our lines and became who we were with each other all the time. Being on set is almost like being stuck in a house when you're growing up with your brothers.

Selena’s turn as a gun-toting, car-almost-jacking thrill-seeker on the big screen has earned her a major nomination!
“I stood up and cheered!” raved absolutely no one who saw Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke‘s 2013 film Getaway, so it’s no surprise the action-thriller is nominated for three Razzie Awards, presented to the year’s less-than-stellar cinematic works. But hey, a nomination’s a nomination — even if the category is “Worst Actress” — so we’d like to take this time to congratulate our girl Selena on her prestigious recognition.
Selena Gomez’s Razzie Nomination: Why We’re Proud Of Her
Films are designed to move us, one way or another, and Getaway did just that. Selena’s film stirred enough emotion within the hearts and minds of the Razzies’ nominating committee that it chose to bestow this nomination upon her, and for that, we salute her.

Trance Eh, Trance was a film that felt like it thought it was more clever than it actually is and I really have no desire or need to see it again. I had little to say when I wrote my review back in April and I have even less to say about it now. You can read my theatrical review right here.
Welcome to the Punch Hey, it's a double dose of James McAvoy, though unlike Trance, I haven't seen Welcome to the Punch but I'd be up for giving it a spin as it seems like a perfect at-home kind of film. Here's the plot: Former criminal Jacob Sternwood is forced to return to London from his Icelandic hideaway when his son is involved in a heist gone wrong. This gives detective Max Lewinsky one last chance to catch the man he has always been after. As they face off,...

"Ginger & Rosa"
What's It About? Sally Potter's ("Orlando") film follows two inseparable teenage girls, Ginger (Elle Fanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert) during the onset of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1960s London. While Ginger's interests lie in protests and poetry, Rosa's are different, including Ginger's father (Alessandro Nivola).
Why We're In: While Fanning steals the film with a strong and powerful performance, "Ginger & Rosa" also has a largely talented cast including Annette Bening, Oliver Platt, Christina Hendricks, and Timothy Spall. Potter's film is both a moving, coming-of-age story as well as a detailed look at the politics and tension of the era.

"Pieta"
What's It About? From South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk, ("Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring"), "Pieta" is both a brutal and heartfelt story of an isolated, merciless loan shark who violently threatens his borrowers for payback money.

Coming off her starring role as smitten zombie lover Julie Grigio in the well-received rom-zom-com "Warm Bodies," stunning Australian actress Teresa Palmer is quickly cementing a reputation for being a versatile team-player who can effortlessly hop from sci-fi action films ("I Am Number Four") to lighthearted comedy roles ("Take Me Home Tonight") without a moment’s hesitation. "Love and Honor," a romantic drama that opens today in theaters, showcases her dramatic chops as activist Candace, a supporter of the 1960s counterculture movement amidst the turmoil of the Vietnam War. She co-stars alongside "Hunger Games" actor Liam Hemsworth, who plays an American soldier who secretly ventures home from the war to reunite with the girlfriend he previously left behind (Aimee Teegarden).
"I just hope people really connect with the movie and that they understand that it’s a beautiful love story," Palmer tells NextMovie about her latest film. "We had a lot of fun doing it.

This is particularly true for the main characters, Vietnam War soldiers Dalton Joiner and Mickey Wright, in the new romance war drama ‘Love and Honor.’ One brash choice leads the two young adults into a very mature situation that involves life and death decisions. As bland and generic as its title, Love and Honor achieves the dubious distinction of making the 1960s seem as long ago and exotic as the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, this drama set in the Vietnam era about two soldiers gone Awol has enough swoony romanticism to win the hearts of teen girls, and the presence of a sometimes-shirtless Liam Hemsworth won’t hurt at all. The film is available on VOD prior to a theatrical release next month. The story takes place during July 1969, providing the opportunity for plenty of television news clips of the Apollo moon landing as

Currently in cinemas alongside Stallone and the gang in The Expendables 2, and previously seen in one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, The Hunger Games, Liam Hemsworth has had a pretty excellent year, making a strong name for himself (beyond the early references to him as Chris Hemsworth’s brother).
He’ll next be starring in romance-drama, Love and Honor, opposite Teresa Palmer (Wish You Were Here, the upcoming Warm Bodies) in the female lead, and now the first trailer has made its way online.

Calling all Liam Hemsworth fans! So, you know, anyone with eyes: the trailer for the hot Aussie actor's newest film, "Love and Honor," has been released, giving you plenty of shirtless images of the shirtless future Mr. Miley Cyrus to savor throughout your Labor Day weekend.
The film, which doesn't have a release date yet, follows two soldiers who head to Michigan during their weeklong leave from Vietnam but end up staying for Love when they fall for a couple of hot war protesters. (The movie was previously called "Awol.")
As Vulture notes, this is as Nicholas Sparks-y as you can get without actually being a Nicholas Sparks movie, which means we're totally seeing this with 10 of our best girlfriends and a few mini bottles of wine we sneak into the theater in our purses.

Rising ingendude Liam Hemsworth has clung to the fringe of two of the biggest action-adventures 2012 has churned out so far. First he played Gale, the love interest left behind in the box office record-shattering Hunger Games, and just this month stormed theaters along with action icons like Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Chuck Norris as part of the expansive ensemble epic The Expendables 2. But for his next theatrical outing in the Vietnam War drama Love and Honor, he's stepping back into a romantic lead territory that first got him notice in 2010 with The Last Song, which co-starred his now fiancée Miley Cyrus. In Love and Honor, Hemsworth stars as a Mickey Wright, a soldier committed to fight in the Vietnam War. After testing out his action muscles with The Expendables 2, Liam Hemsworth is going back to war…and then promptly leaving. Danny Mooney‘s directorial debut Love and Honor features The Hunger Games star in the Vietnam war, who then decides goes Awol with a buddy in order to win back his hometown girl Teresa Palmer. Sounds like a good enough reason as any.
This first trailer is about as bluntly emotional and sappy as one could imagine, but seems to fit the Nicholas Sparks-esque film that was inevitable for Hemsworth to lead at some point in his career. Now that he’s gotten it out of his way, we look forward to more promising work, such as Phillip Noyce‘s Timeless and Paranoia with Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford. Check out the trailer below thanks to Vlicious (via The Playlist):

With the Vietnam war raging, one man will make a decision that tests his own morals, ethics and view on American life: fight for his country or go skinny dipping with Teresa Palmer? Yes, those are quandaries Liam Hemsworth faces in "Love and Honor," the kind of movie Channing Tatum used to do. First-time director Danny Mooney takes on the script penned by Jim Burnstein and Garrett Schiff that is apparently based on a true story of an American soldier who gets dumped while serving overseas and goes Awol with his buddy to win back his girlfriend, only to fall for someone else entirely. And also learn about hippies and anti-war protesting along the way. Shot with an autumnal sheen worthy of Thomas Kinkade, this sales trailer is some pretty soppy, sappy stuff that doesn't know an emotional beat it can't beat down with a sledgehammer. So yes, you will...
