- As Carmichael Industries takes on a missing persons case, Chuck must acclimatize himself to being Morgan's handler and deal with a rival agency. The Buy More gets a new spokesperson.
- Team Carmichael is making a pitch for their business at a security conference, and it goes OK. Once Chuck (Zachary Levi) fixes the batteries in the remote controlling the PowerPoint presentation. Suddenly, a team of commandos surrounds the audience, training laser-sighted automatic weapons on everybody. Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) was right on target: it was a presentation by Gertrude Verbanski of Verbanski Corp. ("If we can get to you, we can get to anyone.") Gertrude (Carrie-Anne Moss) seems to have her attention drawn to a single person in the audience: one John Casey.
Case explains Verbanski was an ex-KGB agent who went corporate after the fall of the Soviet Union. Casey met up with in Minsk in 1995. ("I was being a patriot. She was being whatever she was paid to be.") Even gave him a bad scar with a roswell knife, which covered up one of his favorite scars. Even worse, Verbanski took away all of the potential clients Chuck was trying to get, which didn't sit well with Coach Awesome (Ryan McPartlin), who schooled Chuck on how to talk to large crowds. But Devon reassures him at least there's still money coming in through the Buy More. Well...
CHUCK: (walking into the empty store) Is that an actual tumbleweed?!? (technically, it was part of the new home and garden section, so...)
Morgan (Joshua Gomez) talks to Chuck and says he should have gone public with the fact he's the Intersect, but Chuck puts the kibosh on that right away, saying it will get him killed if people know about him being an entire CIA database. Morgan zooms (yeah, even I'm saying that instead of flashes) on a criminal who walks into the Buy More, and Morgan goes all Intersect on him before Chuck can stop him. And if you were to guess the guy was not there to cause harm, you'd be correct. Actually, he was a client. And the phone call from Case could have come a few seconds sooner.
The team takes Karl Sneijder down to Castle and wake him up. Casey even offers him a muffin. ("I don't eat bran.") Although Sneijder had a criminal record from working in South African diamond mines, he actually wanted to hire Carmichael Industries to recover his kidnapped brother, Wesley. Karl thinks Wesley is being tortured by an ex-client of his, and he brings Wesley's cut-off finger as proof. (CHUCK: Eww, that's not even on ice.) But Sneijder is willing to pay $400,000 for his brother's safe return. First and foremost, however, Sarah thinks Morgan needs a handler, just like Casey and she were for Chuck. Chuck goes to talk to him. Morgan apologizes and says it's tough to be the Intersect, like Peter Parker adjusting to his powers as Spider-Man. Morgan thinks it's a good idea, but they have to put the conversation on the back burner as Big Mike (Mark Christopher Lawrence) returns from his four-week honeymoon of sexual experimentation (and snorkeling) with Bolonia Grimes. The store is awfully quiet, and Big Mike doesn't like that. ("Bolonia Grimes Tucker is not a cheap tigress, boys.") Chuck thinks they need something new, something big, to turn their fortunes around. And we are treated to a 70s-era Buy More commercial starring Big Mike in a lime green leisure suit and afro. (Seriously, anybody who doubts the show has lost something should see that commercial.)
BIG MIKE: It brought in a lot of business at the time, if you know what I mean.
Chuck and Morgan think they need a fresh face on the job. Which hurts Big Mike to no end.
Casey and Sarah observe Wesley Sneijder being held in a guarded compound. Casey pretends to be a lost, drunk hunter (complete with duck call, which I swear he made sound like the notes from ) to test the compound's security. A dozen men with AK-47s gets a passing grade from him. Meanwhile, Sarah gets an invite from Verbanski Corp to talk to the big boss. Gertrude is quite proud of the gun she took from John Casey, even framing it and having it on her desk. Gertrude wants to offer Sarah a job, even reading her CIA file (and somehow Sarah is two years younger now). But Sarah knows Verbanski would never think she'd leave her husband's company, so she suspects the second folder under hers belongs to Casey, and he is the one being recruited. Verbanski wants her to switch sides before her little company goes under, but Sarah is up for some competition.
SARAH: By the way, when this whole thing ends, don't expect me to mount anything of yours in my office. It's just tacky.
As Chuck and Morgan buy Casey a Hungry-Man dinner (something light), Morgan laments not being able to use the Intersect to be as cool as Chuck was and make this "big dusty rock we all live on just a little bit better." But then the clerk gets robbed, and Morgan can spring into action, disguising himself with a mask like all superheroes do. (Remember, this was supposed to be shown at Halloween, so masks are plentiful.) Once again, he leaps before he thinks, as it's time for the Bearded Bandit to save the day. Morgan rushes down the aisle, spin-kicks the bad guy down, and introduces himself as the Bearded Bandit.
CASHIER: (panicked) Take anything you want! Here's the cash!
Then the real bandit comes to and aims his shotgun at Morgan. Chuck is able to grab the shotgun and punch the guy out. And Chuck realizes he's the worst handler ever. Sure enough, Chuck is read the riot act by his former handlers for letting Morgan's picture get in the papers. For Wesley's rescue, Chuck has to banish Morgan to the van. Morgan is upset. He gets not being pitched to potential clients, but not sitting in the van when he's needed the most.
Big Mike is having even more problems. He's filming spokespeople for the Buy More. Jeff's (Scott Krinsky) no good ("reminds me of one of those troll dolls") and Lester (Vik Sahay) isn't much better.
BIG MIKE: I am so over this Jeffster! thing.
LESTER: Yeah, me too.
Just when Big Mike is desperate to find a piece of meat as good as him back in the day, in walks Awesome (in slow motion and with the fan, which doesn't work as well with his short hair, but whatevs).
BIG MIKE: That's a pretty man.
Team Carmichael heads to the compound where Wesley is being kept. They have to climb up the side of a mountain to sneak into the place. Morgan waits in the van while Sarah climbs up and strings climbing line into the pitons Casey is shooting on the way up. She talks to Casey privately over their comms about her meeting with Verbanski, telling him Verbanski even had his gun from Minsk on display. Casey isn't thrilled about that, and Sarah's not thrilled when she almost slips and Casey is a little slow in firing a piton for her to grab. She makes it to the top and Chuck and Casey climb up as well while Morgan does a slow burn in the van. They find Wesley, and it turns out there's a little problem. The people guarding Wesley were guarding him from his brother, Karl. Chuck calls for Morgan to bring up the van, only Morgan isn't there, and Wesley's men are about to cause hell. Just as they were about to come in, Morgan knocks out the lot of them. He comes in and confirms with the Intersect what Wesley told them: he was a protected government witness. Morgan just beat up a bunch of federal agents. Unfortunately, Karl had been watching the whole thing on satellite and had a team coming up to 'retrieve' Wesley.
While Big Mike pitched the idea of being the new Buy More spokesperson to Devon (who did some modeling in college for Abercrombie & Fitch), Karl demanded Team Carmichael hand over Wesley to him or he would take all of them out. Morgan was ready to saddle up and attack him, but Casey nixed that plan right away, saying they didn't have a plan for doing it and no government backup. Morgan didn't really see it that way and the two started trading grunts. Chuck pulled Morgan out of Castle before things could get worse. Unfortunately, they did, since Chuck let Morgan drive. Morgan was getting tired of being held back by Casey and thought Sarah was still holding Chuck back from missions. Morgan was taking them to Karl Sneijder's corporate headquarters. Chuck is ready to call sarah and Casey, but Morgan tries to convince him they were heroes and could handle Karl Sneijder. Morgan goes charging in, and a panicked Chuck calls Sarah, who doesn't want Chuck to go in, too. But he's Morgan's handler and Sarah would have done the same for Chuck.
Sarah and Casey take off for Sneijder's HQ. On the way, Sarah grills him about a little research Casey was doing on Gertrude Verbanski, and Casey contemplates calling in their commandos for help. Sarah doesn't take that particularly well and tells him to go work for them. Casey tells Sarah the only thing Verbanski was interested in was him...physically. It was...complicated, even though it was only one time.
CASEY: Did you ever have sex with someone who just tried to kill you. It was...incredible.
Meantime, Chuck and Morgan account well for themselves, taking out all of Sneijder's men, including one swinging two swords whom Morgan just shot with a tranq gun. ("Good shot, Indy.") Chuck thinks they should cut bait and run because they got lucky, but Morgan wasn't having it. He then gets ticked because Chuck called Casey and Sarah and now thinks Chuck doesn't trust him, either. But it's irrelevant, as Sneijder puts the headquarters on lockdown. Sarah still wants to get in, but Casey tells her it's suicide. However, she has a plan. More accurately, she has Verbanski's number still on her call log. They storm the place and get the job done.
VERBANSKI: (gloating) Now some people might say it's tacky to hire your competition, but I think it takes balls. Oh, and I'll have someone from our Burbank office drop off your bill. We don't have a payment plan.
Chuck thanks Sarah and Casey for coming, but Morgan walks out on them. They return to the Buy More, where their financial situation is a bit better, thanks to Awesome's mesmerizing commercial and the $200K they got up front from Sneijder...minus the $150K they owe Verbanski, the damage to Wesley's safehouse, and all of the climbing gear. (SARAH: Gas for the Lotus...OK, I'll cover that.) But of greater concern to Chuck is Morgan. Both of them apologize, but Morgan gets he won't be a spy for a while. Chuck promises to stay with him to get him ready. But it was obvious Morgan wasn't much for being a friend anymore. Casey talks to Chuck and sympathizes. But Chuck is worried there's more to it, as he didn't catch Chuck's Indy reference from earlier and didn't care if their movie trilogy would be Star Wars or Die Hard. Casey says Morgan will have to get his head on straight...and soon. Chuck asks Sarah why she asked him to be Morgan's handler. Sarah said because a handler had to bring out the best in people and Chuck was the best at doing that for Morgan. Unfortunately, Morgan's job interview with Verbanski might indicate otherwise. Even offering her the Intersect. She was glad to know who the real Luke Skywalker was on Chuck's team.
MORGAN: Um, one question. Who is Luke Skywalker?
