Whether it’s due to Nicholas Cage’s acclaimed performance or not, the actor’s mediocre thriller The Frozen Ground has suddenly made its way to Netflix’s global top more than ten years after its theatrical release.
Currently holding the number 7 position to-date, the movie has been going strong after it initially entered the chart with the same place last week, according to FlixPatrol.
Packed with this-day big Hollywood stars like Vanessa Hudgens, John Cusack and, ironically, 50 Cent, The Frozen Ground follows Alaska Trooper Jack Halcombe, portrayed by Cage, embarking on a hunt for local serial killer Robert Hansen who is believed to have been torturing and sexually assaulting young girls for 13 years.
To get more evidence for Hansen’s arrest, Halcombe dives deep into the whole story and finds out that one victim, Cindy Paulsen, somehow managed to survive, though since then she’s turned into an...

Nicolas Cage is the cinema’s giant, famous mostly for his mainstream action movies, like The Rock (1996), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) and, of course, the Ghost Rider film series (2007–2011). Nevertheless, he’s also much of a thriller actor, capable of putting more suspense and mystery with his impeccable performances.
It’s proved by the film, which is now surprisingly holding the seventh place in Netflix’s global chart, even though it was released in 2011 and since that has been seemingly forgotten. It’s definitely a must-watch for the crime procedurals’ enjoyers.
The movie’s plot revolves around an Alaskan policeman, portrayed by Cage, who is having much trouble solving the biggest case of his whole career, the one of a serial killer (John Cusack), kidnapping and performing sexual assault on the young women.
He’s accompanied by a reckless prostitute (Vanessa Hudgens), appearing to be the maniac’s victim who managed to avoid death.

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Set in 1978, The Tank opens with Ben getting some news about his deceased mother. It appears his father left her coastal property in Hobbit’s Bay Oregon that she never told anyone about. He also finds out that rather than dying in a car accident, his father and sister drowned in said bay. Of course, you or I know better than to go near something like that because it never ends well. Ben, of course, packs up his wife Jules and their daughter Reia (Zara Nausbaum; The Other Side of Heaven 2: Fire of Faith) and goes to check it out.

A new creature feature from New Zealand filmmaker Scott Walker (The Frozen Ground), The Tank is coming to select theaters April 21, followed by Digital on April 25.
Set in the 1970s, The Tank is about a young family who unwittingly awakens creatures at their recently inherited coastal property. Academy Award-winning special effects supervisor and creative director Richard Taylor (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Krampus, Braindead) and his team at SFX studio Wētā Workshop are behind the film’s practical creature effects.
Ahead of the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Walker and Taylor about bringing these creatures to life.
Walker explains where his throwback creature feature began, “It was during Covid when I wrote this, and I wanted it set in 1978 as a nod to a simpler time. That was about a year into Covid, and nobody knew what was going to happen. We had been displaced around the world,...

Writer/Director Scott Walker (The Frozen Ground) evokes the ’80s creature feature for his sophomore film, The Tank. A simple, self-contained premise serves as the foundation for a creature effects showcase. While unique creature design and effects by Weta Workshop make for a compelling centerpiece, the simplistic storytelling undermines it by undercutting the tension and stakes.
Ben (Matt Whelan) and his wife, Jules (Lucianne Buchanan), run a small but bustling pet shop that doubles as daughter Reia’s (Zara Nausbaum) playground. Jules’s extensive knowledge of animals might come in handy when Ben learns that he’s inherited coastal property that has sat uninhabited like a dark family secret for decades. As the family travels to the estate to investigate and explore Ben’s inheritance, they unwittingly wake a long-dormant threat that’s terrorized the land and Ben’s ancestors for generations.

"It's knows we're here." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for a new monster movie horror thriller titled The Tank, made by a New Zealand filmmaker named Scott Walker (who last directed The Frozen Ground in 2013). This will be arriving in US theaters at the end of April. After mysteriously inheriting an abandoned coastal property, Ben and his family accidentally unleash an ancient, long-dormant creature that terrorized the entire region—including his own ancestors—for generations. The film features a nasty-looking slimy monster that was designed as a practical "creature suit" by the incredible team from Weta Workshop. Starring Luciane Buchanan, Matthew Whelan, Zara Nausbaum, Regina Hegemann, Jack Barry, and Holly Shervey. The crew also features Crawl composer Max Aruj creating the score. With the tease at the beginning about axolotl, the monster seems like a giant mutant salamander - or axolotl. Looks freaky. // Continue Reading ›...

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

We desperately need a good courtroom drama.
Not the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard kind, where everyone’s a mess, and the outcome matters less than the spectacle.
But rather, an old-fashioned, high-stakes, plot-heavy movie melodrama—the kind that makes the audience see-saw back and forth, while truth hangs in an ever-changing balance. First things lean one way, then the other. A single stray fact reverses the entire narrative. Sometimes when the verdict comes in, the winner is actually a bad guy, though we only find out later, as in, say, Anatomy of a Murder.
Once a box-office staple, legal dramas of that sort—12 Angry Men, A Few Good Men, The Verdict, Suspect, and any number of films you’ve watched on TCM—were great entertainment. But, much more, they taught a recurring lesson about the dark and slippery nature of reality. Things are seldom what they first seem. Under meticulous scrutiny,...

The Production Guild of Great Britain (Pggb) has unveiled its award winners for 2022 ahead of the prize ceremony on Saturday. Scroll down for the full list.
The Production Team of the Year Award was won by the crew behind Northman, Robert Eggers follow-up to The Lighthouse, including producer Mark Huffam.
According to jury chair Callum McDougal, the decision was made in part because the film was the first major feature to shoot in Northern Ireland during Covid, which sent “a sign across the world that we could continue to work safely in this country and deliver film successfully.”
A special mention in the category went to the team behind Sarah Gavron’s Rocks.
The Pggb High-End TV Production Team of the Year Award went to Andrew Haigh’s See-Saw series The North Water following a challenging shoot.

ABC’s The Good Doctor will be welcoming back a fan favorite — original cast member Antonia Thomas will reprise her role as Dr. Claire Browne in a couple of episodes this spring.
There are no details about what will bring Claire, who took a job at a Guatemalan clinic at the end of Season 4, to the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital and how she will cross paths with her former colleagues, including her close friend Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore). Claire had been Shaun’s confidant for the first four years of the show, and she could lend a hand — and a sympathetic ear — as he picks up the pieces from his latest gut-wrenching fight with Lea in this week’s Season 5 midseason premiere.
In her exit interview with Deadline last June Thomas indicated that she would love to reprise her Good Doctor role as a guest star in the future.

Fremantle has sold out most major territories worldwide on the Martin Freeman-led BBC One smash hit “The Responder,” consolidating the acclaimed crime drama’s contention, even at this early stage, to become one of Europe’s top series of 2022.
Banner deals take in France (Canal Plus), Italy (Disney Plus), Germany’s (Magenta TV). Spain (Movistar Plus) and Russia & Cis (Viasat), all leading pay/SVOD operators.
The sales come as Fremantle, thanks to “The Responder,” “Cross Fire,” “Suspect” and “This Sceptred Isle” looks set to see an unprecedented four U.K. premium dramas finishing production in 2022. Led by “Fellow Travelers,” its English-language sales lineup for 2023 looks equally bullish.
In all, in 2022 Fremantle’s U.K. drama output will more than double compared to the previous year, said Jens Richter, at Fremantle’s global sales arm, Fremantle International, which he oversees as CEO.
That, however, is part of larger global surge.

The last few minutes of Virgin River‘s third season are, quite frankly, insane.
Following a brief-yet-still-too-long separation, Mel and Jack celebrate their rekindled romance with an invigorating mountain hike, unaware that they’re both concealing explosive secrets from one another. Jack throws his grenade first, getting down on one knee and asking Mel to marry him, which prompts her to retaliate in kind: “I’m pregnant,” she tells him. “And I don’t know if you’re the father.” Boom. No survivors.

Exclusive: Cher just tweeted out that on the eve of celebrating her 75th birthday Thursday, she’ll have her life story unfold on movie screens through Universal Pictures. It is a major effort with heavy hitters, and here’s what is happening.
The as yet untitled film will be scripted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, whose recent efforts include adapting Killers of the Flower Moon that is currently in production with Martin Scorsese directing Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, and co-writing the upcoming Denis Villenueve-directed Dune epic. The Cher film will be produced by Judy Craymer — whose brainstorm it was to turn the Abba song catalog into the stage musical smash Mamma Mia! — and Playtone’s Gary Goetzman, who produced the Mamma Mia! films with Craymer. That duo will produce with Cher, who starred in the Mamma Mia! sequel. Cher just produced Kaavan, The World’s Loneliest Elephant, which is streaming on Paramount.

Although not as frequently as the Koreans, Japanese still manage to turn up a number of crime films, mostly based on the plethora of novels of the genre that are published in the country, as much as on actual stories. The Yakuza theme, that was so common in Japanese cinema during the previous decades, is no longer at large and organized crime has given its place to the individual one; however, the quality has not deteriorated at the least, and as we are about to see in the list below, a number of masterpieces of the category are still being shot.
With a focus on diversity, here are 20 great Japanese films, in chronological order, where crime is the main element of the story.

This article contains Superman & Lois spoilers.
There’s no question that Superman & Lois really knows its stuff. The first episode was a genuine love letter to Superman history, and proved once and for all that you can do a faithful, reverent take on the Man of Steel legend without just retreading stuff people have seen a thousand times.
Superman & Lois episode 2 digs a little bit deeper for its lore, but once again pulls tons of terrific deep cuts from both DC Comics and the character’s history in movies and on TV.
Here’s everything we found…
Captain Luthor
Captain Luthor is from a world that was ravaged by an evil Superman (one wearing the black suit that we saw him wear on Elseworlds). Could this mean that this Luthor is from a world similar to Earth-3 in DC Comics, where the people we know as heroes are in fact evil and vice versa?...

February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.
Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. This post-apocalyptic adventure series premieres on Feb. 19.
There are also quite a few intriguing Netflix original movies in February 2021. Malcolm and Marie stars John David Washington...

Amazon’s “Sound of Metal” is a piece of terrific filmmaking — and its achievements are even more impressive considering Hollywood’s depictions of deafness in the past.
“Sound of Metal,” directed by Darius Marder, stars Riz Ahmed as a heavy-metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing. The film has a three-act structure: Attempts by drummer Ruben to cope; his time spent in a deaf community; and his attempts to re-create his life as it was before the hearing loss.
The heart of the film is the middle segment, when community leader Joe (the excellent Paul Raci) tells Ruben that deafness “is not something to fix” and his assignment is simple: “Learn how to be deaf.”
Director Marder tells Variety, “This film is a wake-up. Most people think of deafness as a physical disability. We don’t understand that it is in fact a culture.”

As the most popular streaming service in the world with over 100 million more subscribers than their closest competitors, Netflix are obligated to serve up a steady stream of fresh content to keep their customers occupied. They might be spending close to $20 billion on in-house originals this year alone, but it’s extremely difficult to maintain a platform made up entirely of exclusive titles, which is why so many licensed movies and TV shows are added each month.
Due to the restrictions put in place around the world as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, people are spending a lot more time at home than usual, and understandably, viewership figures for all of the major services have gone through the roof, which has led to some pretty unexpected titles dominating Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched list.

The 2013 crime thriller The Frozen Ground has been seeing something of a resurgence since its debut on Netflix, and if you're wondering about the true story behind the movie, we've got you covered. Based on the crimes of real-life serial killer Robert Hansen, The Frozen Ground covers most of the unsettling true story, but there have been developments since the movie's release. If you're considering checking out the movie or you just finished and are looking for more info, here's what you should know:
What Were Robert Hansen's Crimes?
A decade before his more violent crimes began, Hansen (played by John Cusack in the film) gave an indication of his disturbed state. As reported in the New York Daily News, in 1960, a 21-year-old Hansen burned down a school bus garage in his hometown, Pocahontas, Iowa. It was reportedly revenge for his unpopularity and frustrations over being unable to get dates during high school.

One of the peculiar quirks of Netflix is its ability to give a second life to largely forgotten movies. Whether it’s action films, comedies, or anything in-between, there have been a lot of titles that have received renewed attention courtesy of the streamer. The latest of these is the Nicolas Cage-starring The Frozen Ground, which has been dominating the platform for roughly a week now and continues to do so today, currently sitting as the third most-watched movie on the streaming site.
For those not aware, The Frozen Ground is the directorial debut of Scott Walker, who also provided the screenplay. Cage plays Jack Halcombe, an Alaskan State Trooper hunting down serial killer Robert Hansen, portrayed here in a rare villainous turn from John Cusack. Over the course of the picture, Halcombe attempts to keep sex worker and Hansen survivor Cindy Paulson (Vanessa Hudgens) from harm, while working...

The Premium VOD debut of United Artists’ “Bill & Ted Face the Music” topped charts from the moment it debuted August 28. As a mid-budget title that’s thriving at $19.99, it could be as important as “Tenet” in determining the shape of movie distribution. “Bill & Ted” didn’t see much theatrical play, but given its day-and-date debut it also didn’t have the option. About 1,000 independent theaters did play the title, where by our estimate it grossed around $1.1 million, or around $1,000 per theater.
That’s not a lot, but it’s better than Searchlight’s theater-only flop “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Based on those two performances, UA made the right move: Searchlight devoted marketing spend to a disappointheatrical release that now must wait until November before it can play VOD.
“Bill & Ted” was first on all three possible charts. “Fatima” (Picturehouse), the other new PVOD entry, appeared on two.
