This is a story you do not want to miss. Director Jang Hoon’s second film to be selected as South Korea’s Official Oscar® Entry for Best Foreign Language Film (after 2011’s ‘The Front Line’), Well Go USA Entertainment opened ‘A Taxi Driver’ in the U.S. in August 2017.
More than inspiring, in today’s world, as the precarious balance between the people and their governments is weighted down by disproportionate wealth, power, negligence and abuse; audiences here and everywhere need what this film has to offer. Working together for good can far outweigh the pervasive bad we are subjected to on a daily basis. As is also made clear in the Syrian submission for Oscar nomination, Little Ghandi, the people’s will can prevail if we work together.

Jean Seberg in Les hautes solitudes. Courtesy of The Film Desk.It is a raw experience. No title, no credits of any sort. No soundtrack—although I defy anyone to watch it in absolute silence and not “hear” something, at some point, in their head. Just a series of “moving images” (for once the currently fashionable artworld term is correct), portraits in black-and-white, mostly trained on faces, or the upper parts of several bodies. There is no make-up, only minimal lighting and staging, and no post-production effects or clean-up whatsoever. The on-screen participants include Nico, Tina Aumont, Laurent Terzieff. And, most extensively, Jean Seberg—which may come as a shock to viewers not entirely au fait with the biography of the film’s director, Philippe Garrel. “Garrel’s camera sees Seberg honestly,” wrote David Ehrenstein in his book Film: The Front Line 1984, “as if discovering her for the first time,...

The Korean Film Festival in Australia (or Koffia, the acronym they’ve mercifully given me so that I don’t have to type out “The Korean Film Festival in Australia” too many times. I am not paid by the word, which is clearly why I’m so concise with any tangents and diversions within my pieces, and only stick to the most pertinent of assertations and never crowd the parentheses) has played its second year in Melbourne, and, as I can often be found yelling to people on the train, Korea currently has some of the most exciting filmmaking in the world. On top of the generally excellent pedigree, they’ve also been making what I would say is some of the most innovative and uncompromising crime films since America was doin’ it right back in the ‘70s.
This year’s line-up looked like it may not appeal to my tastes,...
