Dark and gloomy, tight storytelling. Beautiful setting and animation... this episode was a pleasure to watch.

As expected of the great master (now please go back to Mindhunter s3)

Brilliant Animation, brilliant story
MovieMattic20 May 2022
I always look forward to Love, Death & Robots and this second episode is brilliant. I'm glad that it was a bit longer than the first one at 21 minutes which gives just enough time to build up the story to a climax. I could watch this type of stuff everyday!

Dark, bloody, atmospheric, brilliantly animated, awesome voice acting. I could go on forever. Bad Traveling is another love death and robots short that deserves it own movie. I loved every second of this short.

Short Horror Delight!
The creativity, imagination of this world is outstanding. As a horror fan, this episode pushed all of my buttons. Only the music score was lacking. The visuals were so imaginative that I was thinking what would a full-length horror animation be like with these talented animators? This and the Jibaro episodes have leveled up animation to new heights.

I loved the twist at the end. I was expecting a totally different ending for that character, so the writers got me, touché. I am not easily fooled, and I can usually see things a mile away.

Another Level of Animation
I want these type of creature, supernatural series. I can watch these type of animations full day. What a story, Music and Theme. I request to please start separate series based on animation with supernatural and creatures like these.

Stunning, intense, and terrifying

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the most disturbing episodes of the show, and that's saying a lot. First off, the animation blew me away, it was so fluid! The story is simple, but told perfectly due to the tight pacing. It was never dull, and I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. It had so many amazing moments, like the first fight with the crab, the drawing of straws, the "anonymous" voting, and torrin vs his crewmates. But by far the best part of the episode was the ending, it looked incredible. Absolutely stunning episode. 9/10.

Deserves its own Review, what a Masterpiece
ibibrov23 May 2022
I want a feature length film of this, Fincher and Troy Baker have managed to make me feel things in 20 minutes that most movies cant manage in 3 hours. Every second is perfect, Fincher has crafted an true work of art.

Three words

Warning: Spoilers
Democracy Utilitarianism Selfishness

In the beginning you could figure that Torrin was a man of justice and democracy. Him holding the elections and being just in the path of injustice. Though when he began killing people I thought he was power-hungry and not unlike any other person on that ship. "Every one of you made an X". That made everything make sense, all of his horrid actions were all justified. His utilitarian mindset is an interesting mindset to study and therefore very interesting to se what an utilitarian man could be able to do facing that decision.

Film grade!
YouTubeblack21 May 2022
I love when A list directors work on short projects as well besides big budget blockbusters. The story was simple but a bit disturbing. It had an element of horror and mystic, the uncertainty and unpredictability of what's going to happen next. The art direction choices were great, even though the rendering was hyper realistic, it still had STYLE to it. When I was watching this episode i somehow missed who directed it but there was a constant feeling of familiarity regarding the direction style and the gritty noir nature of the film. Then i realised it's a Fincher film and I was like ahh ofcourse! Haha. What a great watch.

Riveting!
Gretel100621 May 2022
This captivated me right from the start - pulled me in and kept me on the edge of my seat. The animation was superb. It was dark, tense, and violent. I will be rewatching it. I would love to see something like this in a series.

Nietzsche: On the genealogy of morality
michelQDimples2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Thrilling, intense yet thought provoking.

While inside the story Torrin justified his actions with an intended spoiler(which to anyone would have been obvious prior to the reveal), the question lingers in my mind: Was it really justifiable that Torrin was willing to sacrifice the lives of his crew over an island of strangers, especially given that he's made a deal with the beast to secure his own life? It's similar to the classic train quiz "would you sacrifice one person's life to save more than one's"? What makes one person's life(or in this case more than one's) more valuable than that of another?

Some may say the crew members choosing their own lives over the islanders' sealed their fate of getting brutally murdered. But if the situation was reversed, would the islanders do the same choosing their and their loved ones' lives over strangers? In which case, how would that be different from the brother on the ship protecting his and the life of his brother?

What if his plan to save the islanders fails and it ends up costing everyone's lives including that of those whom he tried to save, except his?

What if the islanders he tried to save turned out to be, according to his moral compass, evil?

There's relativity is good and evil. We could even see things from the beast's point of view: a hungry mother who just wants to feeds her off-springs..

Honestly I was hoping there was more before the credit rolled. I feel that in some ways Torrin is no more or less "guilty" than those got punished for merely wanting survival.

probably the best of season 3, one issue...
scottfeinberg-9961524 May 2022
Let me just say I loved this episode. My only gripe was that all of the characters looked too much alike, combine that with darkness and fast camera shots it was hard to develope any kind of connection with the crew. It wasnt, "Beyond the Aquila Rift", but really well done. Meh, WTF do I know, just tapped a Binger. Lol.

A story that delivers a very bad message
Visx_Gii22 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is more of a review of the story, than the overall (visual and audio) of the episode.

While the episode is exciting to watch, I can't stop thinking what a bad message it delivers. And from reading most user review praising the story, I kind of worry what our society has become.

First, about the vote to decide if the ship should be headed to a populated island (as the monster demanded), or to a deserted island. There should be a third option. Since there is at least one escape boat, there should be another option: Try to kill the monster along with the ship; and escape with the boat(s) -- basically Torrin's plan at the end, but with more survivors.

If the third option is presented during the vote, most likely half of the crews would vote for this. I say this because the other options are just really bad (morally bad or have slim chance of survival).

The second point is, there is a message in the story that: if a person thinks doing thing a certain way is good, then it is okay for him to kill everyone else if all of them oppose him. If it is not dictatorship, I don't know what is.

If all the other crew members have decided to do thing one way, what gives Torrin the power to not listen to them and kill them all? The proper way in a democratic society is that, there should be discussions and compromise from each side. And ultimately people should get to a solution that is not absolutely one-sided. If the whole crew can include the life boat into the discussion, I am sure they can come up with a better solution where the monster would be killed, and with more survivors (possibly all can survive if they can string together floating devices to the life boat).

Visually this animation is pretty great. Just that the story, and other users reaction, is disturbing.

A masterclass in short-format horror.
noxaman24 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It takes a lot to get me invested in a trope as old as "captain fends off a mutiny," but hot damn; this one did it for me. The writing was fantastically done, and for the life of me I couldn't poke a single hole in the plot or the characters' motivations.

The pacing was perfect. This is a story that could not have been told well in less than 20 minutes, and would not work if stretched out to a feature. In my opinion, this is the the sort of story the short film format exists to serve. Bravo!

I initially rated this a 9, but after considering I truly can't find a single thing to nitpick. If that's not 10/10 material, what is?

This is What Season 2 has been missing Warning: Spoilers
This episode is insane. One of the best episodes of the series. Amazing tone, suspenseful scenes. You can really understand where everyone (even the giant crab) is coming from. A highlight of the show. I forgot how much of a great director David Fincher is.

Holy crap!
chinbagdeluxe21 May 2022
What a great episode. I think as a sum of its parts this is the best episode, but Zima blue beats it with a perfect plot. This episode has a great plot, great characters, a cool art style for the humans and great effects for everything else, amazing atmosphere and score, great performances, great twists and great concept. I also love how the ending subverts your expectations by not having a twist/cliffhanger, which I think was really cool. Overall, very well-written and made episode, 9/10.

Awesome
jhr201222 May 2022
I stumbled upon this not knowing what to expect.

Boy! What a surprise. This was awesome.

However, there was some disappointment. I thought this was a series and was really looking forward to the next episode. Imagine my disappointment when there was none.

More just like this, please!

Nothing else to say really. Despair, hard choices and a brilliant Monster that could exist like this inside the Cthulhu mythos. Probably the best Episode all around. Also the animation and voice acting is flawless.

bleak and unforgiving but hopeful
nabanaba21 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A great story told in a short amount of time. I'm so glad they ended it right when he rowed his boat. It's dark and unforgiving but despite all that there's a glimmer of humanity in the main character who do the right thing to saves hundreds of people that he may not even know. Honestly the best episode of this series so far. It's so bleak but hopeful in a way. I absolutely love this type of story where they never made a point that the main character is a good person but he did the right thing in the end. I love it!

The Highlight of Season 3
keonir22 May 2022
This short was no doubt the absolute highlight of season 3. Loved the shorta blocky art style of the human characters to really differentiate itself from the other 3D shorts. I also love how unpredictable the story was, at first I thought the main character was going to go one way but as it goes on you see his clear motivation for everything he does. I really have to give it to David Fincher for being able to execute this story it's very different from his usual filmography & I really hope he does more shorts in later season.

Good buildup but doesn't stick the landing
Shoebarno23 May 2022
The animation was beautiful. The story was interesting in the beginning. It makes you question what is right, what is necessary and who is good throughout.

However, the way it concludes does not follow the build up and in my opinion makes the whole conundrum: questions about justice and morality, unnecessary.

Great animation but horrible morale
sleviron8 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There is a message in the story that: if a person thinks doing things in a certain way is good, then it is okay for him to kill everyone who oppose him.

This kinda killed the point of him "saving" civillians who might just have defeated the creature without any casualties and for people that most definitely wouldnt have sacrificed their lives as the antagonist expected his crew to do when there were better options to begin with. But because of an anonymous vote which some of them never would have acted on if a certain person didnt push them and tell eveyone the crab badly wants to go there and "it's anonymous trust me" wink* wink*. That wouldnt even be on the radar. Did that crab even talk or did he just troll everyone?

Story -10/10 Animation - 10/10.

Very serious and reasoned episode with a great and cruel moral, the episode shows us that with the right rhythm and the right settings even a pirate story can be original.

The best episode of the entire series
readdead-1247621 May 2022
It really doesnt get any better than this one. Stunning animation mixed with nice stylistic choices. It manages to be both artistic and realistic. Character movements feel impactful and are executed well. The story is simple but a good one. Doesnt have any major plot twist, only a soft one, but not every story needs a plot twist. This was simply great every second i was watching. Sound design was on point, especially with the final tune. Would definietly love to see more from this universe, altough its pretty unlikely sadly...
