Paul Spillenger: Self (narrator)

Quotes

  • Himself (narrator) : [Rodney, the emperor penguin equipped with the Crittercam]  Emperors can hold their breaths for more than 20 minutes. That's all the time they have to find and catch prey in the black abyss below the ice. Rodney drops to about 35 meters and travels at depth. Suddenly, unexpectedly, he rockets toward the surface. Slowly, the penguin's target takes shape: an ice fish. Then he drops back to depth and does the same again. And again. He nails ice fish after ice fish up to six on one dive. His pray never sees him coming. His black feathers camouflage him against the dark below. It's a remarkable performance, one never before seen by humans, let alone filmed. Like an eagle soaring the skies, searching for its prey below, Rodney coasts at depth spotting prey in the ice above. More deployments display the same ingenious strategy beneath Penguin Ranch. It's clear now that penguins use the depth as a vantage point to locate and catch prey. The ice that they breed on above is also a major feeding ground below.
