- Ted tries to choose a date for the Architect's Ball, an embarrassing Internet video could cost Marshall a new job, and Barney makes a bold move to prove to Nora that he's a changed man.
- Immediately after his drunken spree at Punchy's wedding, Marshall learns that he is one step away from landing his dream job working in environmental lawyer Garrison Cootes' law firm. That last step is for them to do a background check to make sure that there are no unseemly skeletons in his closet. Feeling that that drunken spree may have cost him the job and thus vowing never to get drunk again, Marshall does his own Internet search to find any of those skeletons. He finds one video, posted by a college colleague named Pete Durkenson, of Marshall doing a supposed fraternity prank called Beercules. Believing that video could cost him his dream job, Marshall tries to track down Pete to get him to remove the video. Finding a seemingly still immature Pete may get Marshall into even more trouble. Meanwhile, Nora finally agrees to meet with Barney, who tries to do whatever he can to make her believe he's a changed man, even if it takes a marathon in an all-night diner. And Ted decides to start dating again, using his cover story in New York magazine as a come-on to pick-up women. He manages to land two women who are potential girlfriend candidates. He has to figure out which he will take to the prestigious (at least in his own mind) architect's ball to seal the deal. If Robin has her way, she will be the one he takes to the ball if only so that she can meet Lenny Kravitz, who Ted mentions always attends the event.—Huggo
- After the job he is applying for plans to do a background check on him, Marshall tries to delete embarassing videos of him from college; Barney begins to admit all of his lies to Nora, and he then tries to prove how much he truly cares for her; Ted begins dating two girls at once in order to help find "the one."—JJ Jones
- Marshall is still hungover after Punchy's wedding and makes a "sweeping declaration" that he will henceforth permanently stay sober. Future Ted says that Marshall's "sweeping declarations" typically don't work. Marshall receives a call from Garrison Cootes (Martin Short), a partner at one of the nation's largest environmental law firms. He tells Marshall that the company is "very interested" in Marshall's application for employment, and he will receive a job offer after the company completes an extensive background check. The danger of a background check concerns Marshall, who fears that a college-era video of him streaking through Wesleyan calling himself "Beercules", which is now available online, could result in Garrison's dropping the job offer. Marshall contacts the person who uploaded the video, Pete Durkensen (Jimmi Simpson), an old college acquaintance, and asks him to remove the video. However, Marshall ends up getting drunk and streaking again, the effect of playing Edward Forty hands with Pete, although Pete originally wanted to play Darts, and thus another "Beercules" video is uploaded. Pete's refusal to take it down prompts Lily to blackmail him with information that she claims to have received from women who dated him in college. Eventually, Garrison does see the video, but offers Marshall a job anyway; the video is not an issue with him. Later, Pete calls Marshall and offers to remove the video, but Marshall refuses.
Thinking about a date with Nora, Barney appears to the gang in a leg cast and using crutches; he hopes to use these to gain Nora's sympathy. He meets Nora at a 24-hour diner, where Nora sees through his fake injury in the first minute. Nora says she hates guys who lie to her. Barney promises to tell everything truthfully from that point on. Nora wants Barney to tell every lie he has ever told women to get them into bed or any other place he had sex with them. Barney is forced to explain to her all the plays he ever made on women, one of which irks a woman in an adjoining booth who overhears the conversation; she turns out to be one of Barney's previous conquests. Nora leaves, still angry at Barney for lying to her. To prove to Nora that he will never lie to her again, Barney vows not to leave the diner until she agrees to a second date. The gang eats at the diner nine hours later and sees Barney wake up. He refuses to make an order several times, and true to his word, does stay at the diner the whole time, which convinces Nora when she comes back.
Ted capitalizes on being featured in New York magazine, speaking to women at newsstands when they pick up a copy of the magazine. He befriends 16 people, 10 of them were single, 7 liked what they saw, 4 of them being women, and dates two women from among them on separate occasions. With Lily's and Robin's help, he must decide on one of the women as a date to the exclusive "Architect's Ball". Jessica (Nicole Hayden) is a Rhodes scholar and speaks 4 languages. Claire (Runa Lucienne) reached for the check. Robin thinks that the event will be boring, but hints that she would like to become Ted's date when he mentions that Lenny Kravitz will be at the event, since she is an avid fan of the rock star. Ted meanwhile brings out the legal pad, and then color charts to help him decide which girl he should take to the gala. Ted realizes that he doesn't want to choose between 2 girls, he wants to be head over heels crazy about just the one. Ted winds up taking Robin to the gala, where she discovers that the Lenny Kravitz Ted was referring to is an old architect, Leonard Kravitz. Disappointed, Robin leaves the party. Future Ted tells his kids that a person will know for sure about falling in love "pretty quickly and with absolute certainty." While looking at the gala guests, he sees his former girlfriend Victoria (Ashley Williams) arranging cupcakes at a table and they establish eye contact.
