How did you first get into filmmaking?
Growing up in Swansea, there was a strong arts lineage thanks to local youth theatres and the legacy of Dylan Thomas. I was always into acting and was a child of the movies. I learnt a lot from BBC2 documentaries interviewing directors, from Ken Loach to Brian DePalma. Also, my mum is a Professor of Anthropology and her department at Swansea University was in the same building as media resources, so I was able to borrow Svhs cameras and learn to edit on the giant VHS editing decks they had back in the day! I learnt by doing.
What can we expect from your first feature film Canaries?
You can expect some laughs, scares, sci-fi intrigue and some political / social subtext should you go looking for it. Mostly it’s just a fun tale to be enjoyed with a beer and friends.

If writer/director Dominic Burns’ “Alien Uprising” sounds familiar, then it’s probably because you heard about the flick when it was called “UFO.” Since that sort of title doesn’t really fly in the North American market — plus it knocks you to the back of the Netflix and Redbox — the film is now known as “Alien Uprising.” Thankfully, it retains the cameo from Jean-Claude Van Damme, which is the only reason it’s getting covered here today. Sorry, everyone else. A synopsis, if you so desire: A group of friends awake one morning to find all electricity and power shut off, and an immense alien aircraft hovering in the air above their heads. Suddenly this regular group of friends is battling to survive, as the entire human race is threatened by the alien army hovering ominously above. Damn aliens are itching for a split-kick in the face! Of course this isn’t Really a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. As far as I know, he only has a cameo in this thing (not that I’ve seen it or anything, but he does only appear way at the end of the trailer, and if he has a bigger role, you’d think they would show him more often). Dominic Burns’ “Alien Uprising” was formerly called “U.F.O.”, but I guess “Alien Uprising” sounds more “alien” and “uprising”-ish. Here’s the latest trailer for the film sporting the new moniker. The science fiction genre has become almost synonymous with big, Hollywood blockbuster productions, as we rarely see independent British directors attempt such a particular brand of filmmaking. However, Dominic Burns – who brought us How to Stop Being a Loser – ambitiously returns with U.F.O., a film about, you guessed it, a big bloody U.F.O.

Director: Dominic Burns. Review: Adam Wing. From Hard Target to Street Fighter, Kickboxer to Kung Fu Panda, Legionnaire to Timecop and Bloodsport to The Expendables, Jean-Claude Van Damme’s movie career continues to baffle, bewilder and delight in equal measures. Well perhaps not equal measures but you get the point. That trend is set to continue this month with the release of Dominic Burns’ sci-fi thriller U.F.O. With the occasional high and plenty of lows to his name, the Muscles from Brussels seemed to have rediscovered himself with star turns in 2008’s Jcvd, the Coors Light advertising campaign and Stallone’s 80’s action throwback. Proving himself quite the comeback kid, the world rejoiced as Van Damme returned to form with a dazzling spin kick. Just the one spin kick mind, let’s not get carried away here. Having said that, it’s worked for almost thirty years now so why change things?...

U.F.O. hits our UK cinema screens today, and to mark the release of this ambitious British sci-fi, we caught up with director Dominic Burns, and star performer Bianca Bree.
U.F.O. follows the adventure of five friends, who awake one morning to find there is no power or electricity, and a big alien aircraft hovering above their heads. As tensions grow, it soon becomes a case of survival of the fittest, as the human race is seemingly at threat thanks to their new visitors.
Bree – daughter of Belgian action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme – stars alongside Sean Brosnan – (son of Pierce) and she discusses with us what it was like working alongside her father, and in particular her dramatic fighting scene with him.
Meanwhile, Burns – who directed the comedy How to Stop Being a Loser – is becoming something of a jack of all trades, but admits his future lies predominantly in action thrillers.

This’ll teach them to invade when Jcvd is on the case. With a shotgun, no less. It started with a blackout, all power and communications down. Hours later city sized UFO’s invade the world’s skies. Then the war began… Five friends attempt to navigate their way to survival amidst deteriorating chaos as the world descends into terror and anarchy during an alien invasion and interstellar war. “U.F.O.” stars Bianca Bree, Sean Brosnan, Simon Phillips, Julian Glover, Sean Pertwee and Jean Claude Van Damme. It was written and directed by Dominic Burn. No word on a release date.

Dominic Burns’s “U.F.O.” stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and his daughter, Bianca Bree. But mostly it stars Bianca Bree, with Jean-Claude Van Damme kinda showing up towards the end of the trailer with a shotgun. Judging by the limited footage of the Claudester in this two-minute spot for “U.F.O.”, I’m guessing Jcvd has a cameo. Or an extended cameo. One of those. The film itself, a British import, doesn’t look too bad if you don’t mind alien invasion flicks without a $100 million dollar Hollywood budget. Check out a poster and trailer for the film below when you get the chance. It started with a blackout, all power and communications down. Hours later city sized UFO’s invade the world’s skies. The question has been answered – we are not alone! Good, now I can finally continue my life! Thanks U.F.O.! Now, in case you’re still wondering what the hell Jean Claude Van Damme is doing on this image, I will give you the answer to that question – he’s fighting against the Aliens in Dominic Burns‘ new sci-fi movie! Today we have a completely new poster and a pretty cool international trailer to share with you, but please guys – try to remain calm!
Well, the truth is that Van Damme is not an important part of the U.F.O. story. He actually stars as a retired military adviser in the movie. But, hey, when your daughter stars as the lead – you have to support her, right?
So, in case you still know nothing about Van Damme’s little girl, we’re here to present you Bianca Bree, who plays a lead role in the movie!
