It has been more than 15 years since Guy Ritchie released his Sherlock Holmes offering with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. A lot has changed in the film industry since then, with the 59-year-old becoming a mega star thanks to his pivotal involvement in the MCU.
Now that Downey Jr. has hung up his Iron Man suit, he is interested in making a third offering in the Sherlock Holmes film series. This is reportedly in the pipeline, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet. It has been announced that there will be at least one spinoff series, though, which could be set to reinvigorate the franchise.
Detective Remains at Forefront of Popular Culture
There are rumours that there will be two spinoff series, which are due to be released on HBO Max. This could be a clever move from the streaming service, as the Sherlock Holmes brand is massive in popular culture.

Robert Downey Jr.’s graph has seen its ups and downs, particularly during the time he was suffering from addiction. Luckily, he had people around who would go out of their way to help him battle his demons and push him towards the comeback of a lifetime. Out of these people, his wife, Susan Downey, had a major role in helping Robert Downey Jr. come out of the darkness.

Robert Downey Jr. may have recently won his first Oscar for Oppenheimer, but he’s not looking to run from his Marvel past.
In fact, the actor says he’d “happily” return as Tony Stark/Iron Man.
“It’s too integral a part of my DNA,” Downey told Esquire in a new interview. “That role chose me. And look, I always say, never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”
Downey’s Iron Man met his fate in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame in what was arguably the most emotionally devastating moment in the 33-film Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Marvel Comics also always played fast and loose with character deaths, regularly killing off heroes and villains for effect, only to quickly bring them back, Marvel Studios boss Feige has previously said he’s rather protective of the moment Iron Man sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos.

With Robert Downey Jr.’s exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans were hoping that they might finally get to see him don the bowler hat, dress frocks, and long overcoat. However, there has been no update so far and his Sherlock Holmes franchise has been lost in the fog of developmental delays.

Robert Downey Jr. has been receiving congratulations for winning his first Oscar at the 96th Academy Award. His long-time friend and fellow actor Johnny Depp also extended his congratulatory remarks to the Oppenheimer star. But a slightly awkward moment occurred after he shared a photoshopped picture with Downey Jr. The Pirates of the Caribbean star, however, promptly rectified the error and joined in celebrating Downey Jr.’s triumph at the 2024 Oscars.

Sherlock Holmes 3 has been in development hell for quite some time, but recent updates from Robert Downey Jr. and other creatives may have shed some light on the threequel's real status.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, 2009's Sherlock Holmes features Downey Jr. as the titular character as he cracks a case that uncovers the secret mystical plan of Lord Henry Blackwood to gain control of Britain.
The first movie received generally positive reviews and even earned two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score and Best Art Direction. As a result, a sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, was greenlit, and it premiered on December 16, 2011.

Ever since Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes typed that question mark after the words "The End" in 2011's "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," we've all been expecting him to return for another round of sleuthing. In the years following that sequel's half a billion dollar success at the box office, we kept hearing about plans for a follow-up that never actually materialized.
In 2018, Dr. John Watson actor Jude Law revealed that the "Sherlock Holmes 3" plot was supposed to "propel the story forward," and "play up the fact that [Holmes and Watson] haven't seen each other for a long time." That made sense, since the second movie released all the way back in 2011, so there would need to be some acknowledgement of time passing between stories. But since then, even more time has passed, bringing only more delays.

Sony offered up the first footage from “The Equalizer 3” as part of their CinemaCon presentation, and you can now watch the sequel’s red-band trailer online below.
It’s the first and only franchise for old-school movie star Denzel Washington. It’s an unapologetic IP cash-in (“The Equalizer” aired on CBS from 1985 to 1989) where the actual star+concept hook – Washington as essentially “Righteous Revenger Man” – is a bigger selling point than the IP. Washington remains a butts-in-seats draw partially because he never allowed himself to be defined by IP or marquee characters. Like Leonardo DiCaprio and Sandra Bullock, the actor *is* the franchise.
Tom Rothman noted at the start of this presentation that many of his competitors believe that the movie star is no more, a notion that Rothman hopes to prove is entirely wrong. Before we even got the footage, Denzel Washington was presented with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement...

As another Guy Ritchie movie hits theaters this weekend, “The Covenant,” Hollywood finds the director in the most prolific chapter of his career. Ritchie’s done five films in four years, with another, “The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” filming now. And he has more on the way, too, being attached to “Aladdin 2,” Disney‘s live-action “Hercules” remake, and helming a couple of episodes of Netflix‘s “The Gentlemen” TV Series.

It’s been more than 10 years since Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes informed us that “A Game of Shadows” wasn’t necessarily the end. And though it’s been a long road, his wife and fellow producer says that that remains true.
“Sherlock Holmes 3” was first announced back in 2018, with a planned release date of Christmas 2020. In March 2019, it was pushed back to 2021. But of course, it is indeed 2023 and the threequel still hasn’t seen much movement. As of this week, Dexter Fletcher, who was attached to direct the film, said it’s “not currently” in development, and that he doesn’t “know where [Downey Jr.’s] appetite for it is.”
Well, during an appearance on WrapWomen’s “UnWrapped” this week, Team Downey producer — and Rdj’s wife — Susan Downey, alongside her producing partner Amanda Burrell, confirmed that the project is still very much in the foreground for everyone involved.

Robert Downey Jr. doesn’t have to work again for the rest of his life. The star has cemented his legacy and financial security with the Marvel juggernauts that he had partook in. However, outside of the Tony Stark character, Downey also brought a classic franchise into a modern retelling with the action comedies of the Sherlock Holmes movies. The films were also brought to life in a fresh way thanks to the stylistic take of director Guy Ritchie. The last film, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, was released just over a decade ago. Ever since then a third film has been in an out of development, and if you want an update about when (or if) we can expect a third film, Guy Ritchie says you have you ask Downey.

Robert Downey Jr.’s post-Marvel days is seeing the actor scaling back on blockbuster films. His next big budget outing looks to be Christopher Nolan’s latest drama, Oppenheimer. The actor is slated for a mini-series called The Sympathizer, and a pending production of Sherlock Holmes 3. However, the latest project about to be released is a documentary about his father, Robert Downey Sr.
Sr. will be produced by Downey Jr., but is directed by Chris Smith, known for Fyre and Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Netflix has now picked up the documentary and is aiming to give it a big Academy Award push. Marvel Studios currently have twelve feature films, ten TV shows, two animated spinoffs and a holiday special in the works, and out of those 25 projects, only Deadpool 3 is expected to get an R-rating. For over a dozen years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a family-friendly brand, and based on their upcoming slate that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon.

Robert Downey Jr. took his first steps outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for six years when Dolittle arrived almost twelve months ago, and it would be an understatement to say that he stumbled. The $175 million family fantasy bombed at the box office and was almost instantly labeled by critics as one of the worst movies of 2020 despite only arriving in the third week of January, but because 2020 was so unpredictable it wound up as the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year after earning $245 million.

The Dark Universe may have imploded at the first hurdle to the surprise of hardly anyone except the executives at Universal, but the studio are already in the process of rebooting their classic monsters again. Things got off to a great start with Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, which raked in almost $135 million at the box office on a $7 million budget, opening the floodgates in the process.

On top of all that, though, insider Daniel Richtman is now claiming that Benedict Cumberbatch is being eyed to play the iconic Count as well, something that we previously told you months ago.

How can you possibly transition from being the centerpiece of a monolithic cinematic universe comprised of two dozen films, grossing billions and billions of dollars to being the star of a franchise that is working on its third film with no spinoffs or TV shows planned? The answer, if you’re Robert Downey, Jr., is simple—you don’t. You take something as simple as “Sherlock Holmes” and you infuse that Marvel Studios formula into its DNA and you create your own damn universe.

Move over, McU, Robert Downey Jr.’s got his eyes on a different shared universe now.
After saying goodbye to Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, Downey Jr. is returning as the Great Detective in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3. But this belated sequel won’t be an “end of a trilogy” kind of deal. In actual fact, it’s being conceived as a launching pad for a Holmes cinematic universe – or, as Rdj is calling it, a “Mystery-Verse.”
Speaking alongside wife and business partner Susan Downey at Fast & Company’s keynote speech today, the actor revealed their plans to use the threequel, which he’ll be starring in opposite Jude Law as Doctor Watson, to spur a load of cross-media spinoffs based on the works of Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Robert Downey Jr. might be coming off a massive box office bomb thanks to Dolittle‘s disastrous performance, but he’s still one of the biggest movie stars in the world. The goodwill built up during a decade as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Tony Stark isn’t going to disappear overnight, but the next few steps he takes could be pivotal to maintaining that level of success.
Next up for the 55 year-old is Sherlock Holmes 3, which is still scheduled to arrive in December next year, although that seems increasingly unlikely now given recent global events. Beyond that, Downey Jr. hasn’t got any roles in front of the camera lined up, but a new report from insider Daniel Richtman claims that his Team Downey production company are in talks with Netflix to develop multiple projects, and unsurprisingly, the streaming giant want him to star in at least one of them.

Disney would argue that no actor is bigger than the brand, and in most cases, they’ve been proven completely correct. Star Wars has thrived for over 40 years despite reshuffling the cast on multiple occasions, the procession of live-action remakes are largely sold on nostalgia rather than the people starring in them, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has recently suffered the losses of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, but nobody is expecting audiences to stay away because two of the franchise’s biggest stars are no longer a part of it.
However, the relationship between Johnny Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean is different. For most fans, the actor is the face of the entire series, and the thought of a movie without his involvement doesn’t interest them in the slightest. When the 57 year-old was originally dropped from his iconic role as Jack Sparrow, there was outrage, and...

Having recently asked to delay his latest court proceedings in order to shoot Fantastic Beasts 3, it looks like Johnny Depp will be spending a lot more time in the courtroom as his messy legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard continue. And though the 57 year-old might have been dropped from his lucrative and career-defining role as Jack Sparrow as Disney moves forward on two Pirates of the Caribbean movies without his involvement, based on recent speculation, there’s plenty of other franchises he could end up joining.
As well as his continuing presence as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series, concerns over a lack of job offers have reportedly resulted in longtime friend Robert Downey Jr. extending an invitation for Depp to board Sherlock Holmes 3, in what would admittedly be a great aesthetic fit for one of the industry’s most eccentric and bohemian talents.

The old saying goes that life often imitates art, and that definitely applies to the relationship between Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland. After Tony Stark was established as Peter Park’s mentor in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the duo mirrored their superhero counterparts by becoming close friends offscreen, and even went on a hike together when the furor surrounding the web-slinger’s potential withdrawal from the McU was at fever pitch.
There’s been constant speculation that the two could be reunited in the world’s biggest franchise at some point in the future, and while Holland did voice a bespectacled CGI dog in Downey Jr.’s notorious box office bomb Dolittle, the two are said to be actively looking for another live-action project to collaborate on. Robert Downey Jr. knows better than most how it feels to hit rock bottom, with the actor once lauded as one of the finest young talents in the industry before succumbing to his personal demons, leaving his career lying in tatters after a series of highly publicized drug-related arrests and stints in rehab rendered him uninsurable to all of the major studios.
However, having overcome his problems and mounted a minor comeback, Downey Jr. was instantly launched towards the very top of the Hollywood A-list in 2008 thanks to his casting as Tony Stark, and the perfect marriage of actor and character saw Iron Man become a massive box office success as well as one of the most important and influential blockbusters ever made.

Several major films primed to begin production just got some big bucks to shoot in California.
Netflix’s Russo Brothers-directed The Gray Man, the Jessica Chastain-starrer Losing Clementine and an untitled Jordan Peele project for Universal were among nine films allocated $50,053,000 collectively in the last round of Golden State tax credits. Though a return to production has been slow going as California’s coronavirus surges spiked in the last month, all nine films are expected to begin production by early next year.
As you can see in the chart below, the Chris Evans- and Ryan Gosling-starring thriller The Gray Man snagged the largest sum in the first round of what is being termed “Program 3.0” of the incentive initiative.
With $20 million, the movie (which Deadline revealed last month) received just a touch less than what Captain Marvel and Sherlock Holmes 3 got from the California Film Commission program in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

HBO miniseries The Third Day has released its full trailer, proving that it has quite a lot to offer in addition to its headliners in Jude Law, Naomie Harris, Katherine Waterston and Emily Watson. Indeed, while we’ve already caught a teaser for the concept-driven drama, the latest clip is a fantastical barrage of intriguingly contrasting imagery of wonderment and terror.
The series comes from creator/executive producer Dennis Kelly, who, joined by Dean O’Loughlin and Kit de Waal, scripted the series for directors Philippa Lowthorpe and Marc Munden. This creative coalition has concocted a most intriguing format for The Third Day, which—set against the backdrop of a mysterious island off the British coast—has been divided into two distinct stories set in two distinct seasons, centered on Jude Law’s character for “Summer,” followed chronologically by Naomie Harrris’s character for “Winter.”

Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been voted one of the most anticipated 2021 sequels. The Tom Hardy movie was originally slated to come out in October of this year, but due to Covid-19, production was shut down, forcing Sony Pictures to move the release date to June of 2021.
Of course, anticipation for the Venom sequel shouldn’t be all that surprising considering the first movie earned more than $800 million worldwide. But when you compare it to the other follow-ups coming out next year, the love for the symbiote is certainly a bit staggering.

Films shot entirely in California included “Beautiful Boy,” “Bumblebee,” “Book Club” and “Insidious: The Last Key.” Meanwhile, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far From Here” were partially shot in California.
Georgia logged the third-highest number of films produced with 36, followed by Massachusetts with 10, Louisiana and Illinois with eight each and Nevada and New Mexico with seven apiece. Internationally, the United Kingdom led with 37, while Canada trailed with 22.
The report also found that California lagged behind Georgia and the U.
