- While Robin tries to talk Marshall and Lily out of moving to Long Island, Ted and Barney make the decision to become "bro-parents."
- As Lily's grandparents gave her and Marshall title to their house to do whatever they want, they have decided to sell it as a house on Long Island has little appeal to them, that is until they see how their real estate agent has elegantly furnished the house to show it and after they go back to their own apartment, which now seems really small in comparison. They break the news of their plan to move to Long Island by telling their friends that they are going to host Thanksgiving dinner at the house, and never leave. Robin in particular tries to talk them out of making the move, she who has more motives in wanting them to stay close to her in the city than usual. Meanwhile, both Barney and Ted are feeling like it has been a bad year for them with regard to their female relationships, Barney with the break-up with Nora and not getting Robin, while Ted had the bad issues with Zoey, Victoria and the Slutty Pumpkin. Rather than "play for the other team" together (which they do contemplate), they, admittedly drowned in a little too much alcohol, decide to enter into an unconventional joint venture to achieve their relationship wants. In the sober light of day, will their venture seem like as good an idea? Only a borrowed baby and some words from the baby's father may show them for sure.—Huggo
- Ted and Barney have been drinking. Berney has just broken up with Nora, and unknown to Ted, Robin has picked Kevin over Barney. Upset with the poor state of their recent romantic relationships, they decide to adopt a child as "bros". They decide to wait until they sober up to see if it is still a good idea; they decide to proceed to fill out an adoption application together. When an argument ensues (Ted wants to keep his job but Barney wants him to be a full-time caregiver), Barney storms out. Ted also objected to Barney wanting to bang the nanny, having a pet cobra in the house, having week-long parties and all the swords and ninja stars lying around the house. Ted refuses to adopt a baby with Barney. Ted attempts to apologize the next day, but is surprised to see Barney arrive at his apartment with a baby. While Ted is worried about where the baby came from, he is swayed into keeping her when he notices how much female attention he and Barney attract with her. Ted and Barney name the baby Hurricane Stinson-Mosby.
Marshall and Lily drop by the house they were given by her grandparents in Long Island, which they are planning to sell. However, after returning to their city apartment, they perceive it to be much smaller than before, and they rashly decide to move to the house. When Robin learns of their decision, she is shocked and afraid of losing "the gang". In an effort to change their minds, she reminds them of the time when Marshall almost purchased an abandoned fire-house and became a Ghostbuster. To placate Robin, Marshall says that they will move into the house only if the Universe gives them a clear sign in the next 24 hours. Just then, their upstairs neighbor comes by and offers to buy Marshall and Lily's apartment as he wants to turn his apartment into a duplex. He is very rich and offers to give a very good price for their apartment. This is the sign Marshall and Lily were waiting for and they decide to move to East Meadow, Long Island.
When the three arrive at the house to prepare for Thanksgiving, Robin locks herself in their bathroom and refuses to leave until they change their minds. Marshall soon becomes worried about her and knocks on the bathroom window to find out what is going on and why she is not reacting well to the thought of him and Lily moving. Robin says "Maybe I need you guys more than you think". When Marshall asks if this is about more than them moving, she doesn't respond.
When Barney and Ted arrive at Marshall and Lily's house with the baby, Lily is shocked. She manages to convince Ted (who had begun to relish the idea) that this wasn't a good idea. Barney's brother James and his husband arrive, and the child is revealed to be their daughter Sadie, who Barney offered to babysit after inviting James and his family for Thanksgiving dinner.
James tells Ted he almost did the same thing (i.e. adopt a baby with a two-friend parental arrangement) with a female friend, but once they met their life partners, they were both happy that they hadn't followed through with the plan. Ted tells Barney that he no longer wishes to adopt and Barney leaves to take a walk, but when he realizes Robin is in the bathroom, he goes to the window to talk to her. Robin is obviously upset, ostensibly about Marshall and Lily's plan to leave New York City, but finally blurts out that she is pregnant.
