perfect Christmases
ferguson-62 October 2023
Fantastic Fest 2023 Greetings again from the darkness. Croatian filmmakers David Kapac and Andrija Mardesic set this story around Christmas, or so it seems anyway. The tinseled tree is up, the house is decorated with blinking lights, and mom is cooking a beautiful turkey for the family meal. Dad and son race to finish their chores before Uncle arrives after his drive from Munich. What appears to be a Norman Rockwell set-up for the family holiday fun is somehow off kilter ... each of the players displays enough awkwardness that we instinctively know not all is as it seems.

Forced conversation at the table turns to forced gratitude as presents are disbursed. A video is shown and then Uncle departs. We are left to wonder what the heck, when another day arrives and the event is recreated ... right down to the roast beast. We soon see piles of turkeys, cigarette cartons, and BB guns, and realize that these evenings are not just uncomfortable, they are being repeated time after time.

Uncle states many times that all he wants is "a perfect Christmas", though it's not until "Sis" accompanies one evening, that we begin to assemble the clues and pieces. There is enough dark comedy in the first half that we chuckle a few times; however, the second half is so bleak and depressing and filled with suspense, that we can only attempt to shake off the feeling of horror that permeates. Two standout performances here belong to screen vet Predrag Miki Manojlovic (as Uncle) and Ivana Roscic (as the mother).

Support domestic genre film!
Balkanibal4 December 2022
Watched it the other day in cinema, 'cos I wanted to pay full price for the ticket and show my support for Croatian non-arty-farty film.

I'm ambivalent with what I saw.

Camera work, scenography, the cast that's all good and the initial idea for the story is fresh. However, I didn't care for the characters, their plight didn't leave me at the edge of the seat. This film wants to be a psychological thriller but it misses some key components. It has plot holes and there are some rather unconvincing moments - I don't want to write spoilers.

Maybe I'm too critical, but it's only because I want more of non-arty-farty Croatian films and I want those films to be better.

Stric
BandSAboutMovies30 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's Christmas! That's a good thing, right? Not in this movie.

Majka (Ivana Roscic), her husband Otac (Goran Bogdan) and son Sin (Roko Sikavica) are prepping for the holiday visit of Uncle Stric (Predrag Manjolovic). When he arrives on Christmas Day, it's filled with home movies and turkey.

Well, that sounds good, right?

Maybe Stric was a little judgemental and a bit strange, but that's how relatives we see one day a year are.

Except that the family resets and the day starts all over again. And again. And, horribly, again.

Directors and writers David Kapac and Andrija Mardesic capture the 1980s and the wonder - and fear - of the season. The uncle is rich - the Mercedes is our answer to that question - and he soon exudes a command over the rest of the family. It takes something strange in you to combine Groundhog Day with Last House On the Left, yet this movie pulls it off with style to spare.

It's pretty amazing that this is the first movie from these filmmakers.

Teenage obsession with masturbation
marijapoluotok13 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why, oh why, are the authors so obsessed with sex? I thought to myself, "did teenagers write/direct this?". Several times during the movie we see jerking off and Mom jerking off Dad, and then the scene on the table - I have nothing against sex when it serves the story, but in this movie I felt it was there "just because we CAN, so why not". The movie is nauseating and dark. Many scenes are unnecessarily long and "l'art pour l'art". After leaving the movie theater, I thought to myself, "well, that was a waste of time". Balkan authors should finally move away from trying to make a visual masterpiece and focus more on delivering a great story.

Disaster
lukamirkovic-5650612 December 2022
I feel frustrated because I had to spend money and time to watch this. It's like you gave few guidelines to 1st year student and told him to write a scenario. Typical Croatian movie: no real story just the idea, few scenes of sex just because they have to put it in every movie, story (we can't call this a story) must be much more worked out, we didn't find out anything about their situation that led to this happening, also in the end they tried to be misterious but it was just poor and lazy. I'm surprised that some very good actors accepted to do this. If a 1st year student on academy did something like this, he would get maybe 5/10 rating. In the real adult world, I would rate it 0/10 if I could. Croatian cinematography keeps rolling in the same direction.

Disturbing, but not in a good way
hjktvrqrqf11 December 2023
The movie is not well thought out. It's based on this idea that's a bit extraordinary, and in my opinion extraordinary ideas need extraordinary explanations. Otherwise we could just keep making things up, and that's not good storytelling.

The story is unconvincing, there are so many plot holes that haven't been addressed, or even attempted to be explained.

Camera was good, acting was mostly good (considering what they had to work with), but the story is lacking, and that's something that can't be fixed with nice filmography, unfortunately.

I'm really disappointed, especially after seeing the cast which gave me some hope that it's going to be a good movie.

If you start this movie, and the lack of solid plot throws you off, just stop, it's not going to change, there is no catharsis, there is no revelation, and ultimately there is no point.

Just not good
schizza_8712 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The plot is too thin. Nothing, literally nothing happens until a little over half of the movie (Kaja's appearance), and after those five minutes, nothing happens until the end. So, if you wanted to tell the whole story, it would take you 15 seconds in words or approximately three minutes in movie scenes. Everything else is just stealing time (which, here, is by the way extended in hours - it's so slow that not only does the movie not catch your attention, it very soon becomes unbeareably boring - half an hour into the movie, I was considering should I watch until the end or not). The photography is nice, the movie is well shot, the costumes are looking good, but what good is that if the plot doesn't make any sense whatsoever? The time connection to today (cellphones) is completely pointless. We start wondering - who is the uncle? What time does he come from? But there never are any new information to support the imagination. The actors are really good, but that's what they are - four really good actors given some really basic situations they had to play. The acting style reminds me a bit of Stoker and it's sometnihg we've already seen a long time ago. I like bizarre movies, but the whole bizarre world attempt here fails because it lacks some bizarre world solutions - it's just a thin story loop leading nowhere. I would far rather watch Lathimos - yes, it's bizarre, it's cruel, it's so over the top, but it has something to be over the top of. A story, to begin with.
