“Death by Lighting,” Netflix’s upcoming series about the rise and eventual assassination of U.S. President James Garfield, is adding to its cast.
Variety has learned that Bradley Whitford and Shea Whigham have joined the show as series regulars. In addition, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Paula Malcomson, and Tuppence Middleton have also joined the series.
They will appear alongside previously announced leads Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen, as well as cast members Betty Gilpin and Nick Offerman.
“Death by Lightning” is based on the book “Destiny Of The Republic” by Candice Millard. The official logline states that it “brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield (Shannon), reluctant 20th president of the United States, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau (Macfadyen) — the man who would come to kill him.”
Whitford will appear in the series as Secretary of State James Blaine. Whigham will play Senator Roscoe Conkling.

Broken But Beautiful series
Starring Siddharth Shukla, Sonia Rathee, Ehan Bhat
Directed by Priyanka Ghose
The Broken But Beautiful series—I don’t think it can be called a franchise—is all about falling in love with the wrong person to a degree of utter self-annihilation. This idea was explored with some amount sensitivity in the previous season where Harleen Sethi kept obsessing over a man who dumped her while Vikrant Massey waited his turn.
Now it’s Siddharth Shukla’s turn to “fall” so hard and deep into the bottomless pit of love that he can’t see his own ego any longer. It’s a challenging role for a semi-newcomer. Shukla gives his best shot, exposing his arrogant theatre-director Agastya’s character’s vulnerable side, pleading and begging in love(watch him struggle with his conflicted emotions in the big confrontation sequence in episode 6) as mid-way through the...

Starz is officially picking up “Gaslit,” an anthology series from creator and showrunner Robbie Pickering based on the award-winning Slate podcast “Slow Burn.”
The series focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of Watergate, from Nixon’s opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.
Previously announced talent still attached to the show include Academy Award-winning actors Julia Roberts (“Homecoming”) and Sean Penn (“Milk”). According to an individual with knowledge of the project, Armie Hammer and Joel Edgerton (who were both slated to star in the Watergate anthology series) and brother Nash Edgerton (who was set to direct and executive produce along with his brother), will no longer be a part of “Gaslit.” They departed the projects several months ago due to scheduling conflicts, the source revealed to Variety. Watergate drama Gaslit, which is based on Slate’s Slow Burn podcast, has landed at Starz, though it has lost a couple of names along the way.
The network has greenlighted the UCP-produced series starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn. Joel Edgerton, who was set to star and direct, no longer is attached, and neither is his brother Nash Edgerton.
The pair join Armie Hammer, who was originally attached to the project, but also exited. The project was first unveiled in February 2020. These two roles, Hammer was set to play White House Counsel John Dean and Edgerton was set to play G. Gordon Liddy chief operative of Richard Nixon’s “Plumbers” unit, will now be recast.
Matt Ross, who has directed feature films including Captain Fantastic and 28 Hotel Rooms, now will direct and exec produce. Robbie Pickering, who has worked on series including Mr. Robot and Search Party,...

The first of the 10 episodes starts streaming on Hulu on Feb. 28.

Production companies Hunting Lane Films & Silverwood Films are officially on their last legs, as Deadline got the exclusive news that Jamie Patricof and Lynette Howell have come together to form the new production shingle called Electric City Entertainment. Crystal Powell and Katie McNeill will be production vice presidents, Mark Tuohy director of development. Collectively they've helped launch the careers of helmers we hold dear to our cinephilic hearts in Ryan Fleck and Derek Cianfrance. They've contributed to the burgeoning careers of talented behind the scenes folk such as Cinematographer Andrij Parekh, Art Director Inbal Weinberg and Costume Designer Erin Benach. And Ryan Gosling has been the biggest winner on the three times that Patricof and Howell (and producer Alex Orlovsky) got together for a shared common goal. Sundance/Park City which has become a second home to both producer's independent productions will likely be the last time where we see...

"Twenty-Eight Hotel Rooms" (in the Next competition) is a film with two characters, played by Chris Messina (of HBO's "Six Feet Under") and Broadway actress Marin Ireland, who, though both in relationships, forge a passionate relationship after a one-night stand. It marks the feature directorial debut of actor Matt Ross ("Good Night, and Good Luck."). What's it about? The movie is about how romantic love is one of the few things that makes life worth living, but also about how it’s seemingly impossible. Says director Matt Ross: "The genesis of the film came out of a desire to experiment with a specific way of making a movie. It came out of conversations I had with Chris Messina, the male actor in the movie and one of the executive producers. I had originally brought him a different script that I had written. It sparked many discussions about our experiences...

Following up their initial competition announcement the folks at the Sundance Film Festival have released the names of thirty additional 2012 selections, in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next, and New Frontiers sections.
Although these sections tend to focus more on young and up-and-coming filmmakers (particularly the Next sidebar, which was created just a few years ago with that specific mandate), you might find a few names you recognize in the full list of invited films below. Next is where you'll find the new film from "Great World of Sound" director Craig Zobel; it's called "Compliance" and it's described as the (based-on-a-)true story of what happens "when a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee." Lynn Shelton, director of "Humpday," will premiere "Your Sister's Sister" starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and "Humpday"s Mark Duplass. Duplass also wrote his wife Katie Aselton...

Yesterday The Sundance Film Festival released their list of In-Competition films, today they have released their line-up of Non-Competition films. I've had a blast every year that I've attended The Sundance Film Festival, it's always a surprise! You never know what movie you are going to see until you see it. If you ever get a chance to go I highly recommend that you do. Each film on the list has a little description next to it. The festival will take place January 19th to the 29th.
Check out the list of movies below and let us know of any that you are interested in watching or hearing about so that we can get it covered for you. Some of the films might look familiar to you such as The Raid, Grabbers and Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, and Wuthering Heights. The Raid is at the top of...

Yesterday the Sundance Film Festival announced the core lineup of films [1] that will be spotlit in the Competition slates at the 2012 festival. Now we've got a lineup of films that will play out of competition in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next <=> and New Frontier schedules. There are a few films in here with which you might be nominally familiar, like The Raid, Grabbers and Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie, not to mention Andrea Arnold's new version of Wuthering Heights. But many are new announcements. While the competition lineups are always a good place to look for some of the films that will be the most talked-about in the year following each Sundance fest, these schedules are where some of the more unique and provocative films live. There are still some big premieres to be announced next week, but if I was making a big Sundance wishlist,...
